Abstract

This research aims to improve students' skills in writing descriptive text through the use of image media for class VII students at SMPN Satap Lelumpang. The low pre-test results of students are caused by teachers still using conventional methods of teaching writing. So the researchers decided to use a new method that had never been used before, namely using image media. The research carried out was classroom action research in two cycles. Each cycle consists of four stages, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research was carried out at SMPN Satap Lelumpang, with the research subjects being class VII students. Data collection techniques include written tests and observation sheets. The results of research using image media show a significant increase. This can be seen from the students' learning results: in Cycle I, the average score was 4.87 in the poor category, increasing to 8.32 in the good category in Cycle II. The completeness of learning outcomes increased from 48.1% in Cycle I to 92% in Cycle II. This shows that students' skills in writing descriptive text increase through the use of image media.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate how English teachers' questioning techniques affected their students' cognitive growth and engagement. The study aimed to determine the kinds of questions that English teachers employ when instructing their students. Classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with two instructors and twenty students from SMP Negeri 49 Makassar were among the qualitative approaches used in the study. The results showed that both professors used various questioning techniques, such as factual, higher-order, divergent, and probing questions. Divergent questions promoted creative thinking by permitting numerous responses, whereas probing questions prompted students to consider more deeply and elaborate on their solutions. This study's importance stems from its ability to shed light on the function of questioning techniques in EFL classes. The study also offers practical implications for improving teaching practices and student learning outcomes. Future research could explore the impact of questioning strategies across different educational contexts and learning levels and their long-term effects on students’ academic performance. This study contributes to the growing body of research on questioning strategies in EFL classrooms, providing valuable insights into how questioning methods can improve student engagement and cognitive development. It also offers practical recommendations for educators to optimize questioning techniques to enhance teaching effectiveness.

Abstract

The research explores about Problem Posing Approach in enhancing speaking skill at the second grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Mare in 2024/2025 academic year. Utilizing a pre experimental design featuring a single group with both pretest and posttest phases, the study focused on a population of 120 students distributed across four classes: 2A, 2B, 2C, and 2D. Through purposive sampling, class 2B was selected as the sample group, as most of its students were identified as having lower speaking proficiency. Initially, participants underwent an oral assessment to gauge their baseline speaking skills. This was followed by six instructional sessions applying the Problem Posing Approach, after which a post-test was administered. Speaking performance was assessed using several key indicators such as fluency, word choice, articulation, and overall clarity. The results indicated a notable enhancement in average performance scores, which increased from a mean score of 6.87 (SD = 0.71) before the intervention to 10.77 (SD = 0.62) afterward. A paired-sample t-test confirmed the statistical significance of this increase at the 0.05 level (t = 21.06; df = 29; critical t = 2.045). These results suggest that incorporating learner-formulated questions into classroom practice significantly enhances classroom dialogue, improves language production, and strengthens student confidence in speaking. The study concludes that the Problem Posing Approach is an effective pedagogical strategy for elevating speaking proficiency in EFL contexts where student participation is traditionally limited. Educators are encouraged to integrate structured problem formulation and peer dialogue into speaking curricula to cultivate both communicative competence and critical thinking.
