Abstract

This study examines the strategies employed by teachers to enhance the motivation of senior high school students in learning English at SMAN 1 Barru, Indonesia. Student motivation is a crucial factor influencing learning outcomes; yet, many learners struggle with low engagement, limited confidence, and anxiety when using English. Addressing this issue is essential for enhancing language proficiency and supporting national education objectives. A qualitative descriptive design was adopted, with data collected through semi-structured interviews involving six tenth-grade students. The interviews were analysed using Miles and Huberman's (2014) framework to identify recurring themes and patterns. The results revealed that two primary strategies — Active Learning and Reward Systems — significantly boosted student motivation. Active learning, through techniques such as group discussions, gamified quizzes, and brainstorming, created opportunities for collaboration, participation, and self-expression. Reward Systems, including praise, certificates, and bonus points, provided reinforcement that encouraged effort and perseverance. Together, these strategies not only increased enthusiasm but also reduced learning anxiety, making English learning more enjoyable and meaningful. The novelty of this study lies in highlighting how the combination of intrinsic and extrinsic approaches can sustain motivation in Indonesian EFL classrooms. This context has often been overlooked in prior research. The findings offer practical insights for teachers seeking to balance innovative methods with culturally relevant motivational practices. Future research involving larger and more diverse samples, along with teacher perspectives, is recommended to strengthen the applicability of these strategies across different educational contexts.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the comparative effectiveness of traditional and digital material integration within English Language Teaching (ELT) curriculum, focusing on their respective impacts on student engagement, language proficiency, and learner autonomy. Traditional ELT approaches, grounded in structured, teacher-led instruction using textbooks and printed resources, have provided stability and reliability in language learning. However, the advent of digital materials has introduced interactive, personalized learning experiences through multimedia and online platforms, enhancing flexibility and student engagement. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research collected data via surveys and interviews from a sample of pre-intermediate English students to explore preferences, challenges, and perceived benefits of each approach. Findings indicate that while traditional materials excel in delivering organized content and structured practice, digital materials significantly boost engagement, autonomy, and real-world application of language skills. Notably, learners expressed a preference for a blended approach, where traditional resources provide foundational knowledge and digital tools supplement with interactive exercises and multimedia exposure. Despite the advantages, digital integration also presented challenges, such as technological access issues and potential cognitive overload. This study concludes that a balanced integration of both traditional and digital materials can address diverse learner needs, supporting structured language acquisition while promoting engagement and adaptability in dynamic educational contexts. The results offer practical insights and best practices for curriculum developers and educators aiming to enhance language learning outcomes by combining traditional and digital methods.

Abstract

The study focused on how project-based learning (PBL) is applied as a demonstrative learning method to foster the listening skills of second-year students of the English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) in Universitas Negeri Gorontalo (UNG) for a real-world purpose. This qualitative case study explored the implementation of project-based learning (PBL) to develop listening skills among university students, utilizing classroom observations, student interactions, and document analysis for comprehensive insights. Thematic analysis of classroom observations and document analysis unveiled three significant themes: Critical Listening Competence; Active Engagement and Collaboration; Real-Life Context of Listening Skills The results show that students made considerable progress with their listening skills by utilizing real-world projects that emulate authentic communication situations. Collaborative activities provide opportunities for peer engagement and critical thinking, creating a supportive learning environment. The study also emphasizes that educators need to adapt teaching methods, incorporating technology, and provide a variety of listening resources to prepare students for the complexities of professional listening demands. To address these challenges, recommendations for improving the implementation of PBL, including additional educator’s training and the use of effective assessment tools, were made. In conclusion, the research shows how experiential learning can enhance students’ listening skills.

Abstract

Integrating Islamic values with 21st-century skills in EFL education is increasingly essential to address contemporary educational challenges. This study investigates EFL students' perceptions of combining these values and skills within Ma’had Aly institutions, which emphasize cultural and spiritual identity. The research aims to explore the perceived importance of Islamic values, the integration of 21st-century skills from an Islamic perspective, and strategies to harmonize these dimensions in achieving holistic educational goals. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys, semi-structured interviews, and document reviews involving 15 purposively selected EFL students. Quantitative and qualitative analyses reveal that students prioritize Islamic values such as Talab al-Ilm (pursuit of knowledge), integrity, and ethics (72.7%). However, 54.5% expressed dissatisfaction with the current incorporation of 21st-century skills in their curriculum. Despite these limitations, over half of the participants reported working on developing these skills, and 63.6% acknowledged that integrating Islamic values with modern competencies significantly enhances their professional readiness and English proficiency. The study concludes that aligning Islamic values with 21st-century skills fosters a balanced educational paradigm addressing both spiritual and practical needs. Recommendations include strengthening mentorship, optimizing digital resource usage, and embedding Islamic principles into teaching practices to create inclusive, sustainable frameworks for future learning.
