Abstract

Psychological conflict is a condition that we often encounter in our daily lives. It isalso known as interpersonal conflict and is defined as a conflict caused by the characteritself. Commonly, it arises when people make difficult decisions. According to Kurt Lewin’s theory, psychological conflicts are divided into three types: (1) approach-approach conflict (an individual presented with two desirable alternatives), (2) avoidance-avoidance conflict (an individual presented with two undesirable alternatives), and (3) approach-avoidance conflict (an individual presented with twochoices, desirable and undesirable alternatives at the same time). In literary work,a character is a person who has a conflict, and then they are taking action to solve the problem that happens. Every problem must also have an impact that can affect life, particularly on ourselves, both mentally and physically. That’s why the researcher carrying out this research is to analyze what kinds of psychological conflicts were experienced by Capt. Richard Phillips and how these psychological conflicts impact his mental state. This research method is descriptive and qualitative with a focus on Kurt Lewin`s theory. This research data is taken from Captain Phillips’s movie. Other data were collected from various references, namely journals, thesis, articles, and online sources. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing (Miles and Huberman, 1994). In this study, based on the actions, feelings, and utterances of the main character, the researcher found 29 data with the dominant psychological conflict being avoidance-avoidance conflict. The impact of the psychological conflict experienced by Captain Richard Phillips as the main character is mental stress and poor physical health.

Abstract

This study explores the role of openness to Batak culture as the majority culture in the film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap to maintain its cultural identity amid diversity. The openness referred to here is the recognition and acceptance of the existence of minority cultures, in line with the concept of multiculturalism, to minimize the potential for horizontal conflicts that could threaten the survival of cultures. The research method employs a sociology of literature approach, with Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap as the material object of the study. The data analysis technique uses interpretive analysis with the aid of film narrative structure theory from Himawan Pratista and the concept of multiculturalism proposed by Charles Taylor. As this research is qualitative and descriptive, the findings are narrative. The results of the study indicate that multiculturalism, as a bridge for interaction between minority and majority groups, plays a role in maintaining the existence of each cultural identity within a multicultural society, marked by the creation of a dynamic and harmonious social environment.

Abstract

Rivers, being an important element in human life, are often depicted in literary works. One of the literary works that depicts the relationship between rivers and society is the short story “Gagal Landing” by Achmad Supardi. First published in Jawa Pos on January 28th, 2018, the short story shows how the Brisbane River and the Martapura River contribute to the local society. This article explains the comparison of the functions of the Brisbane River in Australia and the Martapura River in Indonesia for society's daily lives. The approach used in this research is sociological literature with interpretive analysis as a data analysis technique. The results obtained show that the Brisbane River and Martapura River have an important role in society and can provide positive benefits for their lives. The Brisbane River functions as a place for pastime, relaxation, and gathering, as well as a waterway transportation route. Its existence can relieve stress, improve mental well-being, release tension, and provide the opportunity for urban society to enjoy moments of happiness. Meanwhile, the Martapura River functions as a waterway transportation route as well as a center for economic and social activities in the surrounding society because of the floating market. The floating market on the Martapura River plays an important role in maintaining and promoting local cultural and culinary heritage.

Abstract

he 19th century in England, particularly during the Victorian era was defined by rigid social norms and power structures that placed women in subordinated roles. Within this context, women were expected to perform traditional duties as wives and mothers with limited access to education or employment. Persuasion by Jane Austen illustrates this reality through female characters, who experience cultural violence from social inequality. This study examined the form of cultural violence endured by the female characters in Persuasion, which reflects the social discrimination that pervaded 19th-century society. The study aims to explore in depth how the social norms and power structures of that era contributed to injustices faced by women. The researcher used a sociological literature approach to answer these questions and applied Johan Galtung’s theories of cultural violence. The data was collected by analysis of expressions and dialogues in Persuasion, which reveal various forms of injustice, prejudice, and sarcasm toward female characters. The findings indicated that the novel’s female characters represent 19th-century women who encountered cultural violence, a concept illuminated through Galtung’s perspective. Notably, some characters resisted the cultural violence they faced, while others adopted a more passive stance, reflecting diverse responses to oppression within a broader social context.

Abstract

This study reveals the deconstruction of horror elements in the short story collection Sihir Perempuan by Intan Paramaditha. The elements are the monster and art-horror elements formulated in Noël Carroll's theory of horror. This research uses a deconstruction approach. The material objects are the short stories "Pemintal Kegelapan," "Vampir," and "Jeritan dalam Botol" from the Sihir Perempuan collection. The analysis technique used is interpretive interpretation. This study draws upon Noël Carroll's horror genret heory and Jacques Derrida's deconstruction. As a qualitative descriptive study, findings are presented in narrative form. The results show that the author deconstructs both monster and art-horror elements. The monster, typically used in conventional horror as a symbol of external threat, becomes a representation of women's suffering caused by social systems. Art-horror, usually employed to evoke fear and disgust, undergoes a shift in meaning, becoming a complex emotional experience of empathy and acceptance of suffering. These forms of deconstruction emphasize that horror in Sihir Perempuan not only frightens readers but represents women's suffering and critiques patriarchal structures.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the values of multicultural education in the film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap directed by Bene Dion Rajagukguk. The film portrays the social and cultural dynamics within a Batak family, highlighting diversity and intergenerational conflicts related to the acceptance of culture and identity. Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap was selected for its explicit exploration of diversity within the family context, depicting how family members with different backgrounds navigate differences in worldview, culture, and identity. The multiculturalism approach is employed to understand how the film addresses issues of diversity and serves as a medium for fostering social awareness in society. This research utilizes Stuart Hall’s theory of representation to analyze how the values of multicultural education are depicted in Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap. The analysis refers to the five multicultural values proposed by Wakano: (1) inclusivity, representing acceptance of differences; (2) prioritization of dialogue as a means of achieving mutual understanding; (3) humanism, which emphasizes the dignity of each individual; (4) appreciation of diversity; and (5) patriotism, stressing the importance of unity in diversity. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the fields of literature and cultural studies, and to enhance understanding of the role of media in promoting multicultural education values in Indonesia, particularly within the context of family and pluralistic society.
