Abstract

This study explores the socio-cultural dynamics of Javanese coastal communities, emphasizing the existence of their indigenous traditional beliefs: Javanism (Kejawen) with its unique spirituality and Abangan, which practically reflects Islam in a syncretic form blending Javanese culture and Sufism. The research focuses on six regions: Subang, Cirebon, Pekalongan, Rembang, Tuban, and Pasuruan. Using Spradley’s domain, it examines the spiritual frameworks and practices of Kejawen and Abangan, including distinctive traditions such as mysticism and cultural titles. Participatory observations reveal that Kejawen and Abangan communities continue to preserve their beliefs, actively practising them while shaping a communal identity that strengthens social bonds. Ironically, some deviant practices, such as shamanism, charms for wealth, and occultism, are often associated with these groups. The findings also highlight the critical role of religious moderation in safeguarding traditional practices, addressing misuse of beliefs, and promoting harmony. This study offers valuable insights into the resilience of Javanese culture amidst the dynamics of contemporary society.

Abstract

The integration of traditional Islamic texts (turath) and modern language practices creates a complex and hybrid ecological dynamic in Arabic language education within Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). Despite its prevalence, the specific translanguaging practices used to bridge classical texts with students' multilingual realities remain underexplored. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the dynamics of translanguaging and how turath is integrated within the hybrid ecology of Arabic language education in Islamic boarding schools. Employing a qualitative case study approach, this research utilized data collected from classroom observations, in-depth interviews with Arabic teachers and students, and document analysis at three Islamic boarding schools Pondok Mambaus Sholihin and Pondok Raudhatul Mutaalimin over a period of six months. The findings reveal that translanguaging acts as a crucial pedagogical strategy, allowing students to negotiate meaning across Arabic, Indonesian, and local vernaculars while comprehending complex turath. Furthermore, the hybrid ecology demonstrates that the simultaneous use of classical pedagogy and fluid language practices fosters a more inclusive learning environment, effectively demystifying archaic linguistic structures for contemporary learners. This research contributes to the literature on bilingual and Arabic education by demonstrating that translanguaging is not a linguistic deficit, but rather a strategic resource that enriches the learning ecology and preserves Islamic intellectual heritage in modern pedagogical settings.

Abstract

Globalization is a phenomenon that has dominated world change in recent decades. Information and communication technology, especially the internet, has played a big role in accelerating globalization. It enables individuals and organizations to communicate, collaborate, and share information quickly around the world. This approach uses Maudhu'i interpretation to understand that the text of the Qur'an can not only be seen individually but also in relation to the cultural, historical and linguistic context in which the text appears.  This allows a deeper understanding of meanings that can change over time and transformations in cultural contexts. It differs significantly from the teachings of the Koran. Some students may find it difficult to understand or accept the concepts of the Koran because of certain perceptions or stereotypes about Islam. This can make conveying the values of the Qur'an more complicated because it requires an approach that respects and understands the diversity of students' understandings.
