Abstract

The Kombong agroforestry system (KAS) has long been practiced and plays an important role in the livelihoods of the Toraja tribe's settlements, in addition to their social, cultural, and environmental sustainability. This research aims to explain the species composition and wood volume, how the utilization of plant species in the KAS has social, cultural, economic, and ecological functions, analyze the plant cultural significance of KAS of the Toraja tribe, the role of KAS for the conservation of Tongkonan Traditional Houses (TTHs) and KAS in preserving the Rambu Tuka' and Rambu Solo’ traditional ceremonies of the Toraja tribe. The research used vegetation survey methods and in-depth interviews with respondents, which were conducted using a set of guidelines for questionnaires. The research results indicate that there are 115 plant species belonging to 49 families. The plant use category is high, with foodstuffs and fruit being the use category with the highest number of species. The index of cultural significance (ICS) of the Toraja tribe varies greatly, from very high categories to those whose use is not yet known. Rice has the highest ICS value, with a score of 130. The KAS and TTHs are closely related and are always found in traditional Toraja settlements. They form a unit that supports each other, and the existence and sustainability of a TTH largely depend on the preservation of the KAS. The KAS has a close connection to both the Rambu Solo' and Rambu Tuka' traditional ceremonies. All plant species needed to build and maintain a TTH and for conducting these two traditional ceremonies are found in the KAS. Thus, the KAS is very important for the Toraja tribe because it not only supports the economic and social aspects of their lives but also functions to protect the environment and traditional culture, including preserving the TTH form and the Rambu Solo' and Rambu Tuka' traditional parties.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Society is currently the center of the use of natural resources, but it is also expected to recover special natural resources in Indonesia. Social Forestry was born as a system for managing forest resources by involving communities around the forest as the main actors in forest management. The community is also given management rights to utilize forest products to help the community improve its economic welfare. As a matter of obligation, the community must also protect the forest environment through PS programs and rehabilitation activities. Forest and Land Rehabilitation through reforestation activities with the Coffee agroforestry system. Coffee plant seeds were also chosen as assistance provided by the Sawitto Forest Management Unit (KPH), Pinrang Regency. This activity began with a discussion of an FGD regarding coffee growth held at the Pinanian Forest Farmers Group (KTH) Secretariat. After the discussion, a field visit was carried out to see firsthand the growth of coffee on the KTH Pinanian social forestry permit land. Coffee plants grow well until they bear fruit, but coffee plants have also been found to have not grown optimally. Coffee was found to have dead stalks or branches caused by pests and appeared during the long dry season. Several things need to be done to overcome this, starting with research to determine the pest's cause. In terms of planting, arranging plant spacing and carrying out Agroforestry pattern planting is necessary. In anticipation of a long dry season next season, preparing an irrigation system, building dams, and other techniques is necessary. Keywords: Coffee plants, growth, agroforestry, Social forestry.

Abstract

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry designates forest and land rehabilitation (RHL) initiatives as a top priority in national policies. Forest and land rehabilitation refers to the deliberate actions taken to restore, preserve, and enhance the functionality of forests and land. Therefore, this study is to assess the viability of cultivating RHL plants. The methodology employed is the observation approach, which entails gathering data firsthand at the specific site. Plant area measurements are conducted on the physical planting area, quantified in hectares, and then compared to the intended plant area as specified in the design. Plant evaluation and assessment is conducted using the Systematic Sampling with Random Start approach, which involves randomly selecting the first measurement plot and then systematically selecting successive measuring plots. The sampling utilised a 5% interval. Rectangular measurement plots are formed with dimensions of 40 meters by 25 meters, resulting in an area of 0.1 hectares. The number of measuring plots can be determined by multiplying the percentage of interest (5%) by the plot area (in hectares) and then dividing by the area of each measuring plot (in hectares). This calculation results in a total of 43 measuring plots. The research findings indicate that the success rate of plant development varies between 76.33% and 77.17%, with an average value of 76.62%.
