Abstract

This study aims to determine the problems and identity negotiations carried out by the protagonist, Hend, in the novel Miral al-Tahawy’s Brooklyn Heights. It is a qualitative research with descriptive analysis method by using Robert Stanton's Narrative Structure theory to show the main issues of the novel and Stuart Hall's identity theory to show Hend's identity negotiation. The results showed that the protagonist in her migration from Egypt to America experienced various identity problems, namely longing for the homeland, alienation, and identity crisis. All these problems encourage the protagonist to create efforts to negotiate between her past and present in several forms; using English to show her position as an American, carrying out dating traditions, drinking beer, dancing tango, and wearing open clothes. Hend's identity in America is not dominant to one side. She becomes half Arab and half American (a hybrid identity). The research also found that her romantic needs for an American man became the starting point of this American negotiation that can be considered as identity negotiation to claim her rights as an Egyptian-American, whose identity tends to be excluded from American citizens regardless the fact that she is American, but not white mainstream society.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the impact of the implementation of PSBB on community income, especially in Julupa'mai Village, Gowa Regency during the Covid-19 pandemic. This research is a field research with a normative syar'i and juridical empirical approach, data sourced from primary data and secondary data. The results showed that the implementation of Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) in Julupa'mai Village had an impact on people's income, especially the lower middle class. However, this can be alleviated with the help of the government during the pandemic, among others Bantuan Langsung Tunai, Bantuan Sosial Tunai, Bantuan Pangan Non Tunai, and Jaring Pengaman Sosial, including assistance derived from programs that existed before Covid-19, such as Program Keluarga Harapan, Bantuan Pendidikan Anak, and Kartu Prakerja. From an Islamic perspective, the application of PSBB is considered as a form of government ijtihad in an effort to maintain the safety of life (hifdz nafs) of every citizen.

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) Describe the language usage patterns of Gen Z on Instagram, (2) Analyse the sociopragmatic aspects that emerge through this language, (3) Identify the social and cultural impacts of the language created by Gen Z on Instagram. The approach used is a qualitative method with case study techniques, in-depth interviews in Achjar et al. (2023), and social media content observation. The results show that the language used by Gen Z on Instagram is not only a means of communication but also a means of expressing social identity, norms, and group attitudes. In the research by Apyunita & Asdah (2025), innovative digital language, such as slang, abbreviations, mixed codes, and emoticons, marks a sociopragmatic dynamic that is rich in social meaning. This research provides an important understanding of language interaction and social context in modern digital communication.
