Abstract

This study analyzes the governance system of the Sultanate of Ternate from the perspective of Siyasah Dusturiyah, an Islamic constitutional law concept emphasizing justice, deliberation (shura), and legitimate leadership. As one of the oldest Islamic sultanates in the Nusantara, the Sultanate of Ternate has a governance structure that integrates Islamic law with local customs. The objective of this study is to examine how the principles of Siyasah Dusturiyah are implemented in the governance system of the Sultanate of Ternate and their relevance in the context of modern Islamic constitutional law. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive analysis method, utilizing historical documents, Islamic legal literature, and relevant academic references. The findings indicate that the Sultanate of Ternate continues to uphold several key principles of Siyasah Dusturiyah, including shura (deliberation), wilayah al-amr (the ruler’s authority in policy-making based on Sharia), and the role of Mahkamah Syar’iyyah in the Islamic judicial system. Additionally, the Bobato Nyagimoi se Tufkange (Sultanate Advisory Council) functions as a supervisory body for the Sultan’s policies, reflecting the ahl al-hall wa al-‘aqd principle in Islamic political theory. Despite adaptations due to modernization and state intervention, the governance system maintains Islamic values in decision-making. This study affirms that the principles of Siyasah Dusturiyah remain relevant in modern governance and can be integrated into Indonesia’s national legal system, particularly in aspects of justice, deliberation, and leadership oriented toward public welfare

Abstract

Tasawwuf as one of the esoteric teachings in Islam is very urgent which is global today. Historically, the embryo of its existence has not yet stood alone as an Islamic discipline as it is today, but is only an example of axiomatic or badihi moral behavior carried out in the daily life of the Prophet Muhammad, then followed by his companions. When the knowledge and doctrines of the teachings of philosophical Sufism mutated to the era, both pre and modern Islam, their existence received sharp scrutiny and scathing criticism from Islamic scholars plus intellectuals. In particular, in Indonesia, Islamic reformers emerged who took part in the process of puritanism of the extreme teachings of Islamic Sufism. The method used is character study, using an approach through library research, namely; collects references in the form of Buya Hamka's works and the writings of figures who write about Buya Hamka's thoughts that have been published in the midst of Islamic society, especially in Indonesia. Both through print media as well as electronic media and social media, then the author describes and analyzes the argumentation of Buya Hamka's tasawuf thought. The results obtained from writing this article are as follows: Buya Hamka, with his brain intelligence and the sharpness of his analytical knife, concludes that Sufism must be recognized as a very urgent need in human life, in particular, for the life of the Muslim community, because it is through Sufism that we will not experience dryness and spiritual poverty. However, for the sake of enriching our spiritual treasures, we must and must forget and turn our backs on worldly life. That is a very narrow teaching and completely wrong. For this reason, Buya Hamka criticizes the old style of Sufism, then builds and modifies the new model of Sufism, through the ideas that have been poured into several of his monumental works on Sufism.

Abstract

This study examines the historical development and contemporary practices of Sufism at the As'adiyah Sengkang Islamic Boarding School in Wajo, South Sulawesi, from the early 20th century to the present. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, interviews with the boarding school's leadership, teaching staff, alumni, and students, as well as a review of the institution's historical documents. The findings indicate that As'adiyah practices a form of Sunni Sufism, reflected in the tradition of halaqah-based learning, the use of yellow books, and the development of moderate religious attitudes. This Sufi orientation significantly shapes the students' personal ethics—manifested in humility, respect for teachers (barakka'na Gurutta'), and ritual discipline—and contributes to the creation of social harmony in the surrounding community. Theoretically, this study contributes to the field of local Sufism by demonstrating that the internalization of Sunni Sufism in the Islamic boarding school education system functions not only as a spiritual discipline but also as a socio-cultural mechanism that fosters religious moderation and social resilience within the Muslim community. These findings confirm the role of Sufism as a transformative force in Islamic education and as a foundational element for strengthening religious moderation in contemporary Indonesia
