Abstract

This article explores the strategy of integrating vocabulary and speaking learning in spoken English classes and investigates how lecturers teach these skills. The integration of vocabulary and speaking is essential as speaking is a productive skill that requires input (vocabulary) and output (spoken English). This study aims to delve into how this integration enhances speaking skills by providing language exposure through contextually relevant vocabulary usage. The lecturer's approach involves situational learning videos, focusing on pronunciation and contextual understanding. Moreover, the incorporation of corpus data, depicting vocabulary usage in various speaking contexts, aids students in practicing vocabulary in appropriate situations. The results showcase a spectrum of student responses, ranging from natural speakers to those reliant on scripted preparation. Assignments, including role-plays and conversational scenarios, foster vocabulary utilization in congruent contexts. Student interviews reflect improved understanding of spoken English through vocabulary exploration strategies, facilitating comprehension and communication. The study concludes that integrating vocabulary and speaking learning enhances spoken English proficiency, guiding educators to develop more effective teaching methodologies. Future research recommendations include expanding participant numbers for richer data insights.

Abstract

The master key to understanding the meaning of foreign language sentences is vocabulary. Mastering a lot of vocabulary makes it easier to understand the reading, follow a conversation, give an answer, and speak a foreign language. Without a proper vocabulary, the students cannot communicate and understand what is being communicated. The goal of vocabulary teaching should be to get students to actively think about the meaning of words and how we can use them in different situations. The use of subtitles in films is an effective way to make it easier for students to develop an understanding of the sentences and vocabulary conveyed in films. For students studying English, movie subtitles have a distinct appeal, especially for expanding vocabulary. The purpose of this study is to see how the use of subtitles in films is beneficial for mastering students' vocabulary and find out whether subtitles in films can influence students' mastery of English vocabulary. The research method used by the author is a qualitative descriptive research. Data collection was carried out through documentation and interviews with research subjects. Abstract

Informative speaking involves delivering speeches to disseminate knowledge and improve the audience's understanding of specific topics. Therefore, this study aims to explore the use of informative speaking strategies in the English Hour programme at RRI PRO 2 Banjarmasin, focusing on how broadcasters implement these strategies and the challenges they face. The case study method was used to obtain data using in-depth interviews, observation, and analysis of documentation in the broadcast process. Two broadcasters who handle the English Hour programme were involved as research participants. The results of data collection were processed using data analysis techniques such as data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing. The results identified that broadcasters used several strategies, such as topic selection, in-depth research, organised structure, clear language, relevant examples, and an engaging delivery style. In addition, the barriers they faced were delivering complex topics, translating terms, and maintaining the flow of the conversation during live broadcasts. In addition, further research is highly recommended to dig deeper into the effectiveness of this strategy and explore additional methods to improve informative speaking in radio broadcasts.
