Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of zoning-based language rules in SMPIT Hidayatul Qur’an Boarding School and explore language use strategies implemented by the students. This study is a case study, and the data are collected using interview and observation. The participants are one English teacher and five students with the criteria of having good English score. The results can be concluded in two points, namely: 1) The zoning-based language rules are adapted from Darussalam Gontor Modern Islamic Boarding School. Some zones that are mandatory for formal language are public places such as dormitory, kitchen, mosque, canteen, and school area. However, the use of the formal language in the school area only when outside of school hours. Then, not all students are required to follow this rule because grade 7 students who have just entered SMPIT HQBS need to get used to the rules first. 2) About language use strategies from the students, it is found that they only use retrieval, rehearsal, and communication strategies. They use retrieval strategies to recall their memory of vocabularies, they use rehearsal strategies to practice the use of certain language structures, and they use communication strategies to create meaningful communication through several ways such as through writing, using body language, or mixing formal and informal language. They don’t use coping strategies because they cannot cope with their lack of language knowledge by themselves.

Abstract

This article explores the strategy of integrating vocabulary and speaking learning in spoken English classes and investigates how lecturers teach these skills. The integration of vocabulary and speaking is essential as speaking is a productive skill that requires input (vocabulary) and output (spoken English). This study aims to delve into how this integration enhances speaking skills by providing language exposure through contextually relevant vocabulary usage. The lecturer's approach involves situational learning videos, focusing on pronunciation and contextual understanding. Moreover, the incorporation of corpus data, depicting vocabulary usage in various speaking contexts, aids students in practicing vocabulary in appropriate situations. The results showcase a spectrum of student responses, ranging from natural speakers to those reliant on scripted preparation. Assignments, including role-plays and conversational scenarios, foster vocabulary utilization in congruent contexts. Student interviews reflect improved understanding of spoken English through vocabulary exploration strategies, facilitating comprehension and communication. The study concludes that integrating vocabulary and speaking learning enhances spoken English proficiency, guiding educators to develop more effective teaching methodologies. Future research recommendations include expanding participant numbers for richer data insights.

Abstract

The master key to understanding the meaning of foreign language sentences is vocabulary. Mastering a lot of vocabulary makes it easier to understand the reading, follow a conversation, give an answer, and speak a foreign language. Without a proper vocabulary, the students cannot communicate and understand what is being communicated. The goal of vocabulary teaching should be to get students to actively think about the meaning of words and how we can use them in different situations. The use of subtitles in films is an effective way to make it easier for students to develop an understanding of the sentences and vocabulary conveyed in films. For students studying English, movie subtitles have a distinct appeal, especially for expanding vocabulary. The purpose of this study is to see how the use of subtitles in films is beneficial for mastering students' vocabulary and find out whether subtitles in films can influence students' mastery of English vocabulary. The research method used by the author is a qualitative descriptive research. Data collection was carried out through documentation and interviews with research subjects. The subjects of this research were two students majoring in English class of 2020 at a private campus in South Kalimantan. This study finds the conclusion that the use of films with English subtitles as a strategy for teaching vocabulary independently can help students to master English vocabulary in a fun and interesting way because students enjoy and are motivated to learn vocabulary.

The study investigates the challenges and strategies related to learning the British accent, while considering the broader context of accent diversity. Through interviews conducted at Muhammadiyah University of Banjarmasin, the responses from students regarding their experiences with British accents were examined. The research reveals that despite the dominance of American accents in the region, there is interest and effort among students to learn British accents. The study also identifies various methods, such as videos and interactions with individuals who use British accents, employed by learners to improve their pronunciation. However, the challenges are substantial, including curriculum limitations, lack of training for educators, and issues related to assessment and infrastructure. While British accents are deemed attractive due to their clear and round pronunciation, the level of difficulty is subjective and influenced by individual interest and intention. In conclusion, mastering pronunciation, specifically British accents, is crucial for effective communication in English, requiring dedicated efforts and appropriate learning resources.
