Abstract

Hypertension poses a serious threat to public health as it can lead to various complications. The family is often the smallest unit in society and has a crucial role in maintaining the health of its members. Therefore, it is important to focus attention on family health management, especially in the context of families who have members suffering from hypertension. The purpose of the study was to apply antihypertensive gymnastics to the families of hypertensive clients with ineffective health management problems. This research used descriptive case study method. Data were collected by using the assessment format and then by giving a questionnaire sheet. The subjects in this case study were two families whose family members suffered from hypertension. Data analysis uses a comparison of results between two families. After the application of anti-hypertensive gymnastics, the data results were obtained, namely in the client 1 family, blood pressure improved and the family's inability to care for sick family members increased and in your family 2, family knowledge about caring increased and blood pressure improved. The results of blood pressure checks on subject I were 140/100 mmHg to 120/90 mmHg, while on subject II were 150/100 mmHg to 130/90 mmHg. This study concluded that families were able to overcome the ineffectiveness of family health management by implementing antihypertensive exercises. This research is expected to be utilized and carried out by the community to prevent and treat hypertension with antihypertensive gymnastics.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension remains a significant public health concern, particularly in developing countries such as Indonesia, due to its asymptomatic nature and potential for severe complications. Objective: This community engagement activity aimed to empower hypertensive patients in Lubuk Batang Baru Village through training in complementary therapies including foot massage, foot soaking, and hypertension exercises to improve knowledge and self-care practices. Method: This participatory program was conducted from July to October 2023 across four sessions. Participants included patients with hypertension, their families, health cadres, village midwives, and nursing students. Activities comprised pre-tests, education sessions using visual media, hands-on demonstrations of complementary therapies, and post-intervention evaluations. Follow-up home visits were conducted to assess the implementation of self-care practices. Result: The intervention significantly improved participants’ knowledge and skills. The percentage of participants with good knowledge increased from 23.3% to 83.3% after four months. Many participants reported regularly practicing foot massage and foot soaking at home, leading to better sleep and reduced muscle cramps. The use of demonstration methods, educational materials, and active family involvement played a critical role in the success of the program. Conclusion: Community empowerment through structured education and practical training in complementary hypertension therapies effectively enhances knowledge, behavior, and self-management among hypertensive patients.

Abstract

Background: The aging process leads to a progressive decline in physiological function, including muscle strength and body balance, which increases the risk of falls among older adults. Falls are one of the leading causes of injury-related morbidity and mortality in the elderly, significantly reducing quality of life.. Objective: This study aimed to implement a combination of tandem walking and balance exercises as an intervention to prevent falls in older adults with balance impairments at the Tanjung Agung Community Health Center. Methods: A descriptive case study design with a nursing process approach was applied. Two elderly participants with moderate fall risk, as assessed by the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), were included. The intervention consisted of tandem walking and balance exercise sessions twice weekly for four weeks. Balance outcomes were measured pre- and post-intervention using the BBS, complemented by structured interviews and direct observation.. Results: Both participants demonstrated improvement in balance performance. The BBS score of Participant 1 increased from 40 to 51, shifting from moderate to low fall risk. Participant 2 improved from 39 to 46, reflecting enhanced postural stability, though still within moderate risk. Both reported greater confidence and stability during standing and walking, with reduced reliance on external support. Conclusion: The combination of tandem walking and balance exercises was effective in improving static and dynamic balance while reducing fall risk in older adults with balance disorders. This intervention is recommended as a practical fall-prevention strategy in community and primary healthcare settings.
