Abstract

Ideally, the selection of leaders in a multicultural country should be a political issue free from the subjectivity of religious beliefs. In reality, however, the urgency of faith and political interests are often mixed, leading to friction within society, including in Indonesia. This gap is intriguing to study, especially how Indonesian Muslims perceive the existence of non-Muslim leaders within the context of Islamic Law. To address this gap, this article examines the thoughts of two figures with substantially opposing views, namely Ibn Taymiyyah and Qurais Shihab. This article falls under library research with a qualitative approach. The methodology used is a comparative study. The results of the research conclude that Ibn Taymiyyah, a classical scholar, emphasizes the importance of a leader's faith and piety, as well as their ability to uphold Sharia law. According to him, a leader must be a Muslim capable of safeguarding and protecting the interests of the Muslim community. However, Qurais Shihab, a contemporary intellectual, offers a more contextual and inclusive perspective. He emphasizes universal values such as justice, welfare, and the common good. Qurais Shihab acknowledges that in the modern socio-political context and pluralism, a non-Muslim leader can be accepted if they are able to ensure justice and the welfare of society.

Abstract

Racism often occurs in everyday life and on social media. Many social media users deliberately post hateful comments to insult others, often related to racism, such as discriminatory treatment based on skin color. This issue contradicts the teachings of the Quran, which advocates tolerance, harmony, and politeness. This research uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach, referring to Wahbah Az Zuhaili's Tafsir Al Munir to analyze the issue of racism in Q.S. Al Hujurat verses 11-13. Wahbah Az Zuhaili interprets these verses based on his experiences and intellectual background, emphasizing the prohibition of insulting, belittling, and finding fault with others, and highlighting the principle of human equality, distinguished only by piety and character. The divine system in mentioning ethics includes reports about corrupt people, the impact of conflict, the prohibition of despicable behavior, and the affirmation of the unity of mankind, with the aim of maintaining the unity of Muslims and spreading the teachings of Islam at all times and places.

Abstract

The construction sector faces significant occupational safety challenges due to its high-risk nature. This study examines unsafe behavior among construction workers at the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport Main Terminal project in Makassar. It aims to identify key risk factors and their impact on worker safety. Data were collected from 99 respondents, including 96 workers and three project managers, through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Using Exploratory Factor Analysis, seven major contributors to unsafe behavior were identified: Neglecting Fundamental Occupational Safety, Breach of Cautionary Signals and Safety Protocols, Careless Behavior and Work Inaccuracies, Performing Dangerous Work Without Proper Training, Neglecting Traffic Safety in Work Zones, Neglecting Equipment Safety and Maintenance, and Unsafe Operation of Machinery and Vehicles. The findings also reveal a significant difference in risk perception between field workers and managerial staff, with field workers showing a substantially lower awareness of risks associated with unsafe behaviors. These results highlight the need for targeted training, stricter safety enforcement, better equipment maintenance, and fostering a strong safety culture through leadership commitment and continuous communication.

Abstract

This study critically explores Al-Farabi’s conception of justice in his political philosophy and evaluates its normative potential and conceptual limitations in the context of contemporary human rights discourse. The central research question investigates the extent to which Al-Farabi’s vision of the al-Madina al-Fadila (Virtuous City) can serve as a philosophical framework for bridging classical Islamic values with modern human rights principles. Rather than assuming full compatibility, the study interrogates the tension between Al-Farabi’s virtue-based, hierarchical model of justice and contemporary demands for equality, intersectional rights, and democratic participation. Employing a qualitative, library-based method and a philosophical hermeneutic approach, the research analyzes key texts—particularly Ara’ Ahl al-Madina al-Fadila and Tahsil al-Sa‘ada—alongside contemporary literature on Islamic legal reform and human rights theory. The findings demonstrate that Al-Farabi’s emphasis on rational leadership, ethical governance, and communal well-being—while historically bounded—offers interpretive value for rethinking legal reform through maqasid al-shari‘ah and contextual ijtihad. However, the study also underscores the epistemological challenges of adapting metaphysical frameworks to rights-based paradigms. It concludes that Al-Farabi’s thought should inspire—not dictate—Islamic legal innovation by contributing ethical and rational principles that remain critically grounded within both Islamic tradition and contemporary socio-legal realities. Academically, this research contributes to the growing body of interdisciplinary scholarship at the intersection of Islamic philosophy, political theory, and human rights, offering a nuanced reappraisal of classical Islamic thought as a dynamic resource for ethical-legal reform in pluralistic modern societies.
