Abstract

Indonesia is the largest palm oil producing country in the world. Every ton of processed oil palm fruit yields approximately 230 kg of empty fruit bunches (EFB). Currently, only about 10% of the EFB generated by the palm oil industry is utilized, while the rest remains as waste. This has prompted researchers to explore ways to optimize its use, one of which is converting EFB into activated charcoal.. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of phosphoric acid concentration on the quality of activated charcoal made from EFB. The research consists of two main processes: the carbonization of EFB and the activation of the resulting charcoal using phosphoric acid as an activating agent. The concentrations of phosphoric acid used for activation were 6M, 7M, 8M, 9M, and 10M.. Based on the results, the activated charcoal produced at all acid concentrations met the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 06-3730-06). The best quality activated charcoal was obtained using 10M phosphoric acid, with quality parameters including a moisture content of 7.76%, ash content of 6.55%, and an iodine adsorption capacity of 1,011.60 mg/g.

Abstract

Uji mutu awal menunjukkan kadar karoten minyak makan merah sebesar 420 ppm, melebihi ambang minimal 380 ppm.

Abstract

Biodiesel production produces crude glycerol as a byproduct that cannot be utilized directly because it still contains various impurities. The crude glycerol used in this study had a glycerol content of 72%, a water content of 1.78%, ash content of 16.4%, and a density of 1.08 g/cm³, which indicates that the glycerol quality is still low due to the high water content and inorganic components. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of three types of adsorbents, namely activated carbon, zeolite, and bentonite, in improving the quality of crude glycerol from used cooking oil. The purification process is carried out through distillation, acidification, and adsorption stages with adsorbent variations of 5%, 7%, and 9%. Then, the purified glycerol was analyzed based on the parameters of glycerol content, water content, ash content, and density.

Abstract

The quality of crude palm oil (CPO) is an important factor affecting the success of the refinery process, particularly during bleaching. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of CPO quality with different Deterioration of Bleachability Index (DOBI) values on the quality of refined bleached deodorized palm oil (RBDPO) at various bleaching earth dosages. Two CPO samples with DOBI values of 2.67 and 0.87 were used, while bleaching earth concentrations were varied at 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, and 2.5%. The observed parameters included carotene content, percentage of carotene reduction, absorbance value as an indicator of oil clarity, peroxide value, and percentage of peroxide value reduction. The results showed that increasing the bleaching earth dosage improved bleaching effectiveness, as indicated by decreases in carotene content, absorbance, and peroxide value in both CPO samples. CPO with a DOBI value of 2.67 exhibited greater reductions in carotene, absorbance, and peroxide value than CPO with a DOBI value of 0.87. These findings indicate that the initial quality of CPO significantly influences bleaching efficiency and the quality of refinery products.
