Abstract

The Melawi Malay community has a rich tradition of medicine using oral literature in the form of mantras, passed down through generations. These medicine mantras incorporate elements of beautiful sound and reflect the ecological, customary, and cultural values of the Malay people. This research aims to unveil the sound patterns and describe the symbolism of the triadic ecological elements, namely nature, nurture, and culture. To achieve this, purposive sampling was employed to select key informants, with Su Usnah, a traditional healer from Bina Karya, Melawi, being a crucial source. Through interviews and field notes, six relevant data sets were extracted from a pool of 15 available medicine mantras for analysis. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research utilized stylistic protocols to categorize the data according to existing sound patterns and employed ecocriticism guidelines to reveal the presence of ecological elements within the Melawi Malay medicine mantras. The primary findings of this research disclose the existence of four sound patterns in these mantras: assonance, alliteration, consonance, and rhyme. The ecocritical perspective reveals that each mantra contains ecological elements, including nature, such as flora and natural elements; nurture, reflecting the relationship between nature and society, and human connections; and culture, as manifested in customary practices. This study deepens our understanding of the sound patterns and ecological elements present in these mantras, with the hope that further research, through exploration of mantras in the Melawi Regency, can contribute to the continuous conservation and promotion of oral literature. Enriching the global understanding of mantras from linguistic, literary, and ecological perspectives is vital in practising traditional medicine in Melawi and other regions in West Kalimantan.

Abstract

The indigenous communities, including the Dayak Kanayatn, face significant challenges in preserving their language and culture amidst rapid modernization. The traditional Dayak Kanayatn songs are crucial in preserving their culture, as the lyrics contain valuable vocabulary, history, myths, and moral lessons. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing Charles Sanders Peirce's cultural semiotics theory to analyze the signs, referents, and interpretants within the lyrics of nine Dayak Kanayatn songs to uncover their cultural values. The analytical methods employed include transcription of the lyrics, structural and semantic analysis of sentences, identification of cultural symbols, and evaluation of the objects referenced in the lyrics. The meanings derived from the analysis are examined to understand cultural and environmental resilience, and conclusions are drawn based on these findings. The traditional Dayak Kanayatn songs reflect cultural symbols that depict agrarian life, harmony with nature, skills, hard work, well-being, and gratitude. Additionally, these songs also reflect social solidarity, community identity, as well as the life cycle and belief in the universe.

Abstract

The literacy issue in Indonesia reveals a significant deficiency, with a reading index of only 0.001 according to UNESCO and a ranking of 60th out of 61 countries in reading culture, as reported by WMLN 2016. Low literacy rates among children negatively impact their cognitive development and learning abilities. Studies from PISA 2018 and EGRA indicate that many early-grade students struggle to comprehend reading materials, a situation comparable to stunting in health. This research explores multimodal flipbooks as an innovative solution to enhance literacy and diversify learning media in elementary schools. By integrating text, images, audio, and video, these flipbooks offer an interactive and engaging learning experience. A conceptual qualitative method was employed to analyze the needs and potential for developing teaching materials through this innovative concept. The results demonstrate that multimodal flipbooks are effective in improving literacy and diversifying learning media, providing an attractive alternative to overcome the limitations of conventional media in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the implementation of differentiated instruction in high school classrooms. The research focuses on adaptive teaching strategies tailored to the needs of students, including those with sensory disabilities such as visual and hearing impairments. A qualitative method with a case study approach was used to explore the in-depth application of differentiated instruction in real-world contexts. Data collection was conducted through direct observation, in depth interviews with teachers and students, and document analysis, such as academic records and lesson plans. The study focuses on eight students as a sample within a class of 30 students in the XI B grade at Kemala Bhayangkari 1 High School, Kubu Raya. Analysis was carried out using a qualitative case study approach to understand how teachers adapt and implement differentiated teaching strategies in an inclusive classroom. The application of differentiated instruction strategies at Kemala Bhayangkari 1 High School, particularly in grade XI B, successfully created an inclusive learning environment for students with mild sensory disabilities. The results show that these strategies enhanced active participation and motivation among students with sensory impairments. However, challenges such as limited resources and a lack of teacher training hindered optimal implementation. Differentiated instruction has great potential to create an inclusive and effective learning environment in inclusive classrooms. However, improving access to tailored resources, fostering closer collaboration between teachers, support staff, and parents, as well as providing professional development for teachers, is necessary to accommodate the diverse needs of students more effectively. Thus, differentiated instruction holds significant promise in fostering inclusive and effective learning environments in inclusive settings.

Abstract

Oral literature in Indigenous communities’ functions as a symbolic medium that records and transmits a collective worldview. One of its forms is pameo, a concise expression that affirms values and norms within social life. Among the Dayak Keninjal community, pameo serves not only as motivational slogans but also as representations of moral principles and perspectives on social and environmental relations. This study aims to uncover the collective worldview embedded in Dayak Keninjal pameo. Unlike previous proverb studies, this research positions pameo as a representation of a collective worldview through a cultural semantic approach. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data consisting of ten pameo collected through interviews and field documentation in January 2026. The analysis was conducted through the identification of lexical meanings and cultural semantic interpretation. The findings indicate that Dayak Keninjal pameo reflect five interconnected life orientations: togetherness, resilience, creativity, steadfast responsibility, and brotherhood and deliberation, with action as the core of meaningful life. These findings contribute to the theoretical and empirical enrichment of oral literature and cultural semantics studies by reinforcing the concept of worldview grounded in local wisdom.

Abstract

Code-switching studies have generally focused on socio-pragmatic aspects, leaving the cognitive dimension in bilingual speakers’ language decision-making relatively underexplored. In fact, language switching occurs through processes that interactively involve social, linguistic, and cognitive factors. To address this gap, this phenomenological qualitative study involved three active bilingual participants with backgrounds in Indonesian, English, Italian, Japanese, and Tagalog at Lembaga Bina Budaya Pontianak. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation and were subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The findings indicate that executive control, working memory, and metacognitive awareness play significant roles in determining the timing and form of code-switching. Participants employed tag switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching adaptively in accordance with social context and communicative objectives, thereby enhancing semantic precision, maintaining social relations, and managing interactional nuances. Emotional factors and personal experiences also influenced language preferences. Theoretically, this study underscores the importance of a cognitive-phenomenological perspective in bilingualism research. Practically, these findings are relevant to the development of language instruction and intercultural communication. Thus, bilingualism may be understood as a communicative practice that involves the management of cognitive processes in determining language choice.
