Abstract

This research aims to examine and understand how the tradition of “Maragat Tuak Bagot” (tapping palm sap) in the Batak community in the Central Tapanuli region reflects an ecological imagination that is in line with the principles of Catholic Eco-Theology (Laudato Si). This tradition is a cultural practice that contains ecological and spiritual meaning, in which the Batak people in the Central Tapanuli utilize natural resources in a sustainable manner and with full respect for the environment. Through a Catholic Eco-Theology approach, this research seeks to explore the theological values contained in this tradition and how these values are lived out in society. The research method used is qualitative and literature study. Field data was obtained by conducting in-depth interviews with community leaders and practitioners of the “Maragat Tuak Bagot” tradition. The research results show that the “Maragat Tuak Bagot” tradition not only has a socio-cultural function but also contains deep ecological messages. This practice contains reflections on the importance of maintaining natural balance, respecting creation, and involving the spiritual dimension. Apart from that, the “Maragat Tuak Bagot” tradition also represents the relationship between humans and nature which is in line with Catholic Eco-Theological teachings about human’s moral responsibility to care for the earth as a shared home. The results of this research provide an important contribution in enriching the discourse on ecology and theology in Indonesia, as well as offering a new perspective in environmental conservation efforts based on local wisdom and religious values.

Abstract

This study examines the philosophy of the Nias megalithic stones and their relevance for Catholic Youth (OMK) in the city of Gunungsitoli through a qualitative-ethnographic approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with traditional elders, community leaders, and Catholic youth; participatory observation in customary activities and religious devotions; as well as archival documentation, photographs, and field notes. Thematic analysis identified three clusters of values: resilience (perseverance, discipline, hope), community (mutual cooperation, deliberation, communio), and spirituality (awareness of Christ’s presence in cultural history). The findings show that megalithic stones continue to function as cultural archives, centers of social interaction, and pedagogical symbols for the character formation of Catholic youth. Within the framework of inculturation, these values are reinterpreted in catechesis, culturally rooted liturgy, and social action, without contradicting the Church’s teaching. The study concludes that faith-culture integration strengthens the dual identity of Catholic youth and encourages their role as agents of change in preserving the megalithic heritage and in pastoral ministry. Recommendations include digital documentation of sites, culturally based youth training, and ongoing collaboration between parishes, schools, and traditional leaders in the region.

Abstract

This article is a literature review that examines Paul Ricoeur’s concept of narrative identity and its relevance to education. Ricoeur conceives human identity as a dynamic construction shaped through narrative, namely the reflective interpretation of life experiences within the dimensions of time, social relations, and self-awareness. In this framework, education is not merely understood as a means of knowledge transmission but also as a hermeneutical space where learners construct an understanding of themselves through experience, reflection, and dialogue. Narrative enables students to coherently connect the past, present, and future, while simultaneously cultivating character, responsibility, and empathy. This article highlights the importance of narrative-based learning strategies, such as case studies, autobiographical writing, analysis of literary and historical texts, and project-based learning. Through these approaches, students are encouraged to develop a reflective and ethical identity that is open to diversity. Thus, Ricoeur’s thought provides a strong philosophical foundation for building humanistic character education in which learners are positioned as subjects who grow and transform through their own life stories.
