Abstract

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education offers significant opportunities to transform learning processes, including in Catholic Religious Education (CRE) at the senior high school level. This article aims to identify effective and ethical strategies for integrating AI into CRE instruction by considering Catholic faith values and students’ character development. The study uses a qualitative literature review approach to analyze scholarly sources and current practices of AI application in education. Findings indicate that AI can enhance personalized learning, provide real-time feedback, and create more interactive and context-rich learning experiences. Practical implementations such as adaptive learning systems, chatbots, and AI-based simulations have shown positive impacts on students' comprehension. However, challenges including teacher readiness, technological infrastructure, and ethical concerns must be addressed seriously. Therefore, integrating AI in CRE must be done thoughtfully, responsibly, and in harmony with religious and moral contexts. With careful planning, AI can become a valuable tool to deepen students' faith understanding and support holistic character formation in the digital age.

Abstract

This study examines the philosophy of the Nias megalithic stones and their relevance for Catholic Youth (OMK) in the city of Gunungsitoli through a qualitative-ethnographic approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with traditional elders, community leaders, and Catholic youth; participatory observation in customary activities and religious devotions; as well as archival documentation, photographs, and field notes. Thematic analysis identified three clusters of values: resilience (perseverance, discipline, hope), community (mutual cooperation, deliberation, communio), and spirituality (awareness of Christ’s presence in cultural history). The findings show that megalithic stones continue to function as cultural archives, centers of social interaction, and pedagogical symbols for the character formation of Catholic youth. Within the framework of inculturation, these values are reinterpreted in catechesis, culturally rooted liturgy, and social action, without contradicting the Church’s teaching. The study concludes that faith-culture integration strengthens the dual identity of Catholic youth and encourages their role as agents of change in preserving the megalithic heritage and in pastoral ministry. Recommendations include digital documentation of sites, culturally based youth training, and ongoing collaboration between parishes, schools, and traditional leaders in the region.

Abstract

Hombo Batu, or fahombo, is a Nias tradition involving jumping over tall rocks, now widely recognized as a cultural icon, particularly in Bawomataluo Village, South Nias. This research was conducted to examine the symbolic, historical, and contemporary relevance of this cultural practice in the lives of local communities. The method used was a descriptive qualitative approach combining literature review, participant observation, and the study of various relevant academic documents. The research findings indicate that Hombo Batu is not merely a test of physical strength or courage, but also a means of affirming cultural identity, strengthening social solidarity, and educating the younger generation about values and character. The meaning has shifted over time, from its original function as a traditional military exercise to prepare young people to defend their villages, to its development as a cultural attraction and tourist attraction with economic value. These changes do not necessarily eliminate the traditional meaning, as Hombo Batu remains viewed as a symbol of dignity, honor, and cultural heritage that must be preserved. Therefore, this study emphasizes the importance of local community-based preservation, the implementation of adaptive conservation strategies so that traditions remain relevant to the modern context, and the integration of Hombo Batu into character education and sustainable tourism, so that this cultural heritage can continue to live and make a positive contribution to the Nias community and the nation at large.

Abstract

The ecological crisis gripping the world is increasingly apparent through the intensity of natural disasters, extreme climate change, and environmental degradation that threaten human survival. In response to this situation, Pope Francis, in his encyclical Laudato Si' (2015), called on all humanity to view the earth as a shared home that must be cared for with full responsibility. This article focuses on the relevance of Pope Francis' teachings in facing today's ecological challenges, emphasizing the development of ecological spirituality, the concept of integral ecology, and an awareness of social responsibility. The study was conducted through a literature review by examining encyclicals, official documents of the Catholic Church, and recent Indonesian-language books and academic articles. The results show that caring for the earth is not merely a technical act of conservation, but is a call to shift the paradigm of life to align with faith, science, and social solidarity. The Catholic Church itself plays a crucial role in building ecological awareness through education, liturgy, and interfaith dialogue. By integrating moral, spiritual, and public policy aspects, the concept of integral ecology offered by Pope Francis is seen as highly relevant to addressing the challenges of the global environmental crisis. This article emphasizes that the commitment to embracing the earth is not just an ecological obligation, but also a call of faith and humanity for the sake of the sustainability of life for current and future generations.
