Abstract

Introduction: Occupational safety and health (OSH) is a crucial issue in the medical laboratory environment, considering the potential for exposure to various biological and chemical risks. The proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is one of the main pillars in mitigating this risk. Understanding the medicolegal implications related to the use of PPE is an important aspect that can influence laboratory staff compliance. This study aims to examine the relationship between understanding medicolegal implications and compliance with the use of PPE among laboratory staff at Indriati Boyolali Hospital. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional observational design. The sample consisted of 120 laboratory staff at Indriati Boyolali Hospital who were selected randomly. Data was collected through structured questionnaires to measure the level of understanding of medicolegal implications and direct observation to assess compliance with PPE use. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive and inferential statistical tests (chi-square test and logistic regression). Results: The research results showed that there was a significant relationship between understanding medicolegal implications and compliance with PPE use (p < 0.05). Laboratory staff with a better understanding of medicolegal implications tend to demonstrate higher levels of compliance in the use of PPE. Other factors such as age, gender, and work experience were also found to influence compliance with PPE use. Conclusion: Understanding medicolegal implications is an important factor that contributes to compliance with the use of PPE among laboratory staff. Comprehensive educational interventions regarding medicolegal aspects of OSH can increase the understanding and awareness of laboratory staff, thereby contributing to improving occupational safety and health in the laboratory environment.

Abstract

Introduction: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common public health problem in adolescent girls. In Indonesia, the prevalence of IDA in adolescent girls reaches 37%. Iron tablets are an effective intervention to prevent and treat IDA. Methods: This research was a randomized controlled trial conducted on female senior high school students in Klaten, Indonesia. A total of 200 female students who met the criteria for anemia (hemoglobin levels < 12 g/dL) were randomized to receive iron tablets or placebo for 12 weeks. Results: At the end of the study, hemoglobin levels in the iron tablet group were significantly higher than those in the placebo group (mean difference 1.2 g/dL, 95% CI 0.8-1.6 g/dL). The prevalence of anemia in the iron tablet group was also significantly lower compared to the placebo group (20% vs 40%, p = 0.02). Conclusion: Giving iron tablets is effective in increasing hemoglobin levels and reducing the incidence of anemia in female senior high school students in Klaten, Indonesia.

Abstract

Introduction: Stroke remains a leading cause of mortality and morbidity globally, with variations in subtypes and risk factors observed across populations. The role of cholesterol in stroke, particularly its association with ischemic and hemorrhagic subtypes, continues to be investigated. This study aimed to examine the relationship between cholesterol levels and stroke outcomes in a Central Javanese population. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at hospitals in Central Java, Indonesia. Data were collected from medical records of patients diagnosed with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke between January and December 2022. Demographic information, stroke subtype, and cholesterol levels were analyzed. Statistical tests were employed to assess the association between cholesterol and stroke outcomes. Results: The study included 68 patients (34 ischemic, 34 hemorrhagic). The majority of hemorrhagic stroke patients were female (52.9%), while ischemic stroke patients were predominantly male (64.7%). The mean cholesterol level for hemorrhagic stroke patients was 202.59 mg/dL, and for ischemic stroke patients, it was 190.26 mg/dL. Statistical analysis revealed no significant association between cholesterol levels and stroke subtype (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The findings suggest that cholesterol levels may not be a primary determinant of stroke subtype in this Central Javanese population. Further research is warranted to explore other potential risk factors and their interplay with cholesterol in influencing stroke outcomes.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most common non-communicable diseases that often presents without symptoms but carries a high risk of severe complications such as heart disease and stroke. Preventive and promotive efforts, such as health education and regular blood pressure screening, play a crucial role in increasing public awareness of healthy lifestyles. This community service activity was conducted in Jayan Village, Boyolali, through educational sessions and health screenings involving local residents as participants. The results showed that 81% of participants were identified as having hypertension at various levels. This program successfully improved community understanding of early detection of high blood pressure and encouraged lifestyle modifications. Routine blood pressure checks proved to be an effective preventive strategy for controlling hypertension at the community level.
