Abstract

The prevalence of breast cancer in Indonesia is still increasing. Data from the Global Cancer Observatory shows that the most common cancer case in Indonesia is breast cancer. Meanwhile, the incidence of breast and cervical cancer in Bontang City reaches 30% of the overall cancer data in Bontang (Akurasi.id, 2024). Therefore, there is a need for a health promotion campaign and breast cancer prevention using simple communication methods. This program aimed to provide education to health cadres (PKK) in three sub-districts of Bontang, targeting 100 participants. Five sub-districts were selected from each of the three sub-districts, with seven participants sampled from 10 sub-districts and six participants sampled from five sub-districts. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. The program employed a participatory research approach based on community empowerment, using the TPS (Transactional, Precise, and Skilled) communication model. The program was conducted in three stages. In the first stage, theoretical information related to breast cancer and its prevention was provided, along with 100 questions and answers shared online beforehand. The second stage involved practicing breast self-examination (SADARI). The third stage combined theory and practice, incorporatingeducational strategies through games and evaluations. The program results showed that 83% of participants agreed that knowledge about breast cancer and its prevention was necessary. The program successfully improved the knowledge and attitudes of PKK/health cadres through an interactive, participatory approach. Although there were barriers related to participant agility, support from trained organizers proved effective in overcoming them. These findings confirm the importance of health education that emphasizes two-way communication and breast cancer prevention.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the differences in perceptions between Social Welfare students from the 2020 and 2021 cohorts at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara, regarding the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Mengajar (MBKM) Teaching Campus program. A quantitative approach with a survey method was used to collect data through questionnaires distributed to samples from both cohorts. The results indicate that 2020 cohort students have a more positive perception of the program compared to 2021 cohort students, primarily due to differences in learning experiences and participation levels in the MBKM program. Students who have participated in the program tend to have a deeper understanding of its practical benefits, such as improved communication skills, leadership, and workplace adaptation. In contrast, students who have not participated rely more on secondary information and peer experiences to shape their perceptions. Another influencing factor is the level of expectation regarding the program's relevance to the field of social welfare. These findings provide valuable insights for the development of the MBKM Teaching Campus program, particularly in designing strategies to increase student participation by considering their academic experience and readiness for the professional world. Keywords:  Perception, Student, Kampus Mengajar, FISIP, KESOS

Abstract

The problem of lack of interest in learning and the suboptimal development of creativity and skills in children is a challenge in efforts to improve children’s social welfare. This study aims to analyze the factors causing these problems and evaluate appropriate social welfare interventions. Using a qualitative case study approach at the Child Welfare Institution (LKSA), this study found that environmental factors, lack of educational stimulation, and minimal access to training were the main causes. Through intervention programs in the form of tutoring, skills training, and creative approaches, an increase in children’s interest in learning and creative abilities was found. The results of this study also show that family environmental factors, past trauma, and minimal educational stimulation contribute to low child motivation. Collaboration is needed between social workers, caregivers, and external parties in supporting holistic child development

Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in Indonesia, with high mortality rates often attributed to late detection. This study aims to analyze breast cancer prevention interventions through community empowerment in Bontang City, focusing on the community’s social construction regarding knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors toward early breast cancer prevention. Using a qualitative, descriptive-exploratory approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), observations, and documentation involving various stakeholders, including healthcare workers, local leaders, and the general public. Thematic analysis identified vital themes such as public knowledge gaps, limited awareness of early detection methods like self-examination (SADARI), and socio-cultural barriers. Results reveal that community empowerment plays a significant role in increasing awareness and participation in prevention programs. However, misinformation, limited access to healthcare services, and a lack of sustained support hinder optimal outcomes. Local policies that consider specific regional health needs, alongside collaborative efforts between the government, healthcare providers, and community organizations, are crucial to enhancing the effectiveness of breast cancer prevention interventions. This study offers theoretical contributions to developing community empowerment models in health prevention and provides practical recommendations for improving local health policies in Bontang.
