Abstract

Puberty is a normal developmental process in which a child develops into a biologically and/or sexually mature adult. Even though puberty is a natural event, it is not uncommon for children to be confused or worried about puberty. Therefore, using the Participatory Action Research Method, this community service aims to increase knowledge about puberty in boys in the Sambikerep sub-district, Surabaya. The activities include health promotion, education, and free circumcision for the children by surgeons and medical students from the School of Medicine, Universitas Ciputra Surabaya. Statistical analysis of knowledge before and after health promotion used the Wilcoxon test in SPSS version 26 with a significance limit of p < 0.05. The overall community service activities ran quite smoothly; there were 24 children who took part, with the number of children getting a pre-test score < 75 points as high as 29.2%. However, no children got a post-test score of < 75 points after the health promotion. The median score of knowledge about puberty before and after health promotion was 75 (12.5–100) and 100 (87.5–100) points, respectively (p-value <0.001). Through this community service, health promotion and education about puberty must be continuously provided to pre-pubertal boys so that they have a good understanding of puberty and make healthy decisions related to their sexual and emotional health.

Abstract

Musculoskeletal pain such as aches and pains is a health problem that is closely related to a sedentary lifestyle and an unbalanced diet. This study aims to analyze risk factors and provide educational recommendations based on questionnaire data from 38 respondents in Setro Village, Menganti, Gresik Regency, East Java. Descriptive methods were used to evaluate health parameters (age, BMI, blood pressure, uric acid levels, cholesterol), sitting habits, screen time, physical activity, and consumption of sweet foods/drinks. The results showed that the majority of female respondents (93%) were aged 40-68 years with a high prevalence of risk factors: 60% overweight, 10% obesity (BMI>25), 16% hypertension, and extreme uric acid/cholesterol levels (up to 11.8 mg/dL and 339 mg/dL). As many as 73% reported musculoskeletal complaints (joint pain, tingling) that correlated with long sitting habits (>4 hours/day), lack of exercise (40% never did physical activity), and daily consumption of sweet drinks (60%). The results of this study indicate that a structured educational intervention is needed to increase awareness of low-purine diets, regular physical activity (eg, elderly gymnastics/jogging), and sedentary screen time management. The conclusion of the study emphasizes the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration (medical personnel, government, community) in a healthy lifestyle and healthy diet-based prevention program to prevent musculoskeletal complications.

Abstract

Abstract

Insulin resistance plays a crucial role in maternal metabolic adaptation during pregnancy. Underweight pregnant women have metabolic conditions potentially affecting insulin sensitivity and glucose homeostasis. The Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) quantitatively measures fasting glucose and insulin levels, providing insights into metabolic health during pregnancy. This study aims to determine the differences in HOMA-IR between underweight and normal-weight pregnant women. The research employs a case design with a quantitative approach, using non-probability sampling techniques including quota and purposive sampling. The total sample comprises 24 participants, divided into 12 underweight pregnant women and 12 normal-weight pregnant women. Statistical analysis shows significant differences between groups: glucose levels (p <0.001), insulin levels (p = 0.018), and HOMA-IR values (p <0.001), all indicating significant findings (p <0.05). The study found differences in glucose and insulin levels between the two groups. Insulin and glucose levels tended to be higher in underweight pregnant women, indicating insulin resistance involvement with higher HOMA-IR levels compared to normal-weight pregnant women. This study can serve as a basis for understanding the patho-mechanism in underweight pregnant women.

Abstract

Nutritional status and growth and development stimulation are important factors influencing the quality of life of children and adolescents. Low parental health literacy regarding nutrition and developmental stimulation may increase the risk of growth disorders, developmental delays, and decreased children’s health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This community service program aimed to improve community knowledge regarding balanced nutrition and child growth and development stimulation through community-based education in Sajen Village, Pacet District, Mojokerto Regency. The program was conducted through interactive health education sessions, discussions, demonstrations of developmental stimulation, and the distribution of educational media in the form of leaflets and booklets. Evaluation was performed using pre-test and post-test methods to assess changes in participants’ knowledge after the intervention. The evaluation results demonstrated an improvement in participants’ understanding of balanced nutrition, growth and development stimulation, and the role of parents in supporting children’s quality of life. The participatory educational approach increased participant engagement and facilitated more effective health information transfer. This activity indicates that community-based nutrition and developmental stimulation education can serve as an effective promotive and preventive strategy to improve public health literacy and support the optimization of children’s growth, development, and quality of life in rural communities.

Abstract

Adolescents are a vulnerable age group to reproductive health problems due to limited knowledge, attitudes, and appropriate behaviors. This community service activity aimed to describe students’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding reproductive health after receiving sexual health education at SMA Karang Turi Semarang. This activity used a descriptive design with a one post-test only approach. A total of 70 students participated, consisting of 35 male and 35 female students. Data were collected using a questionnaire covering aspects of knowledge, attitudes, and reproductive health behaviors. The results showed that the respondents’ level of knowledge ranged from moderate to good, with a mean score of 65.71 and a median of 70. However, misconceptions regarding HIV transmission and low awareness of HPV vaccination were still identified. Overall, students’ attitudes toward reproductive health were generally positive, particularly regarding the importance of maintaining reproductive organ hygiene and the need for sexual education from adolescence. Nevertheless, preventive reproductive health behaviors were not yet optimal, especially in terms of condom use and routine reproductive health check-ups. In conclusion, sexual health education provides an overview that students have fairly good knowledge and positive attitudes; however, these are not yet fully reflected in optimal behaviors. Therefore, more comprehensive and sustainable sexual health education is needed to promote behavioral changes in adolescent reproductive health.
