Abstract

The current paper aims to highlight the unrestricted obedience expressed by Mary when declaring herself ‘the handmaid of the Lord’ and when demanding that the divine will would be accomplished in her, just when she agrees to be chosen by God as virginal mother of his divine Son incarnate. The elements of the unrestricted obedience are drawn out of the text Luke 1:26-38 using the Narrative Analysis Method. Apart from that, these elements were also sought and found by analyzing the Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution ‘Lumen Gentium, especially the section on the Church’s view of Mary (53-69). Looking to Mary as an example, Christians learn to obey God in the path of faith and finds the values that lead him or her through the paths of the Christian life.

Abstract

Religious moderation is necessary to guarantee social stability against the unwanted ideological force and even physical collisions in society. Social and religious lives are not isolated but must be integrated into one another. Building an educated and open-minded religious community is required to achieve this goal. The ideal religious moderation should be created through active participation from all members of diverse religious communities to achieve the same goals based on togetherness, inclusive attitude, respect, and mutual understanding related to performing certain rituals and doctrines of each religion. The variety of typologies of interfaith relations, such as exclusivism, inclusivism, and pluralism, are commonly formulated to bring these diversities into the further step of harmonious religious dialogues. This article uses the phenomenological approach in studying the meaning of religious moderation, according to Franz Magnis-Suseno. Specifically, according to Magnis-Suseno, someone just can talk about religious moderation if there is a willingness to accept and recognize plurality. That is, assuming the difference. Religious moderation means getting relatives or groups, even though their views, beliefs, and beliefs are different.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract. The emergency situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic has forced Catholics to worship by attending online mass. Although it is seen as a quick and responsive solution for the Church, many have questioned the efficacy or usefulness of online mass as a means and sign of God's salvation for His people. This paper provides an explanation of the efficacy of online mass as a sacrament of salvation by using the text Mark 5:25-34 about a haemorrhaging woman suffering who received miracles of healing after touching the garment of Jesus. This study was conducted by Narrative Criticism with the Exegetical Symbol Analysis approach. The analogy of the miracle of healing obtained by touching the robe of Jesus provides an understanding that the efficacy of online mass as a sacrament of salvation continues to work even though it is not experienced directly or in distance.

Abstract

With his immense intellectual stature and his encyclopaedic knowledge, al-Ghazâli has influenced Islamic thought and defined its practice for nearly nine centuries. Like many legal experts and philosophers, al-Ghazâli divides the universe into the transient world and the eternal hereafter. This world, or temporary existence, is subject to the will of God. It is not governed by a set of scientific laws, but is maintained, governed and driven by the direct and continual intervention of God (rejection of causality). God is not only the creator of the universe and of its attributes and laws (or the cause of existence). He is also the cause of every event in the world, great and small, past, present and future. As a Sufi, al-Ghazâli does have a theory of ethic as a part of his tasawuf discipline. Some experts come to consider al-Ghazâli as a Sufi figure, some other also goes to classify him as a prominent figure of philosophy. This is understandable actually, because from the books he wrote all indicates his interest on both tasawuf as well as philosophy. By considering his books Maqâshid al-Falâsifah or Tahâfut al-Falâsifah, or through his Mi’yâr al’Ilm, one would consider him as a true philosopher. But one might also comes to conclude him as a real Sufi or a true mystic simply by looking at his master piece works such as Ihyâ al-Ulûm al-Dîn, or Kitab al-Arbâ’in dan al-Munqidz min al-Dhalâl.

Abstract

One of the reporting strategies is dialogue. Acts 17:16-34 describes Paul's dialogical way of proclaiming the Gospel to the Athenians. First, he used public spaces to meet, communicate, and interact with Athenians. Second, he regarded the Athenians as partners in discussion. Third, he used the richness of local Athenian culture as an entry point for his sermons and corrected them. In this way, Paul knew and understood their mindset and lifestyle. Although it has not succeeded in converting the Athenians, it offers an alternative preaching strategy. The next question is how this strategy can be applied today. This paper uses the text analysis method to find the stages of the procedure used in current reporting. Thus, the proclamation of the Church not only elevates the context of society but also makes a positive contribution to them. Therefore, Paul's narrative in Acts 17:16-34 can be a model approach for the Church to realize a dialogical proclamation.

Abstract

Abstract. Believing in God and not is a human attitude in facing the ontological big reality, including his existence. Various arguments have proven the existence of God whether through ontological, cosmological, or teleological evidence in the context of philosophy and theology. This paper presents Kant's thinking which rejected all these arguments. Using Wittgenstein's method of philosophical investigation, this paper showed that for Kant, such evidence was a futile effort because human reason is limited. Kant argued that through morality, humans can find God and religion. Through morality too, Kant rejected atheism. This study can contribute to the deepening of the discussion on the existence of religion, which has always been the subject of awareness of human existence; as well as being material that can be presented in public discussions to maintain social harmonization.

Abstract

Indonesia is a multi-ethnic, multicultural and multi-religious nation where religions are developed and adhered to and are inseparable from a plural society. Sociologically, religious pluralism is a fact that we are different, diverse, and plural in terms of religion. The existence of these religions is a particular challenge that each religious believer must face because pluralism is already around us, and not no one can refuse it again. In such conditions, tolerance and interfaith dialogue of religious adherents are the primary capital in maintaining the integrity of plural and multicultural religious communities.

Abstract

The development of radicalism has reached all corners of the world, including the Southeast Asian region. The main target for recruiting radicalism movements is young people, especially students. This paper examines the efforts of campus institutions and students in anticipating the influence of radicalism, especially in the campus environment. The study was conducted on students in Indonesia and Malaysia. The method used in this paper is qualitative, through in-depth interviews, focus group discussion (FGD), and document review. This paper finds that students in Indonesia and Malaysia have become aware of the rise of radicalism in their countries, so various responses have been followed to protect themselves from the dangers of this ideology. Efforts undertaken by the campus include a policy of disseminating an understanding of religious or Islamic moderation wasatiyah. Meanwhile, the efforts made by students to fortify themselves include independent efforts through an independent search for knowledge and learning in class, friendship relations, student discussions, and access to social media. All efforts made by campuses and students are part of instrumental actions using campus institutions as bureaucracy. This paper argues that radicalism as a collective action can be anticipated through collective social action, such as by utilizing available instruments.
