Abstract

The development of radicalism has reached all corners of the world, including the Southeast Asian region. The main target for recruiting radicalism movements is young people, especially students. This paper examines the efforts of campus institutions and students in anticipating the influence of radicalism, especially in the campus environment. The study was conducted on students in Indonesia and Malaysia. The method used in this paper is qualitative, through in-depth interviews, focus group discussion (FGD), and document review. This paper finds that students in Indonesia and Malaysia have become aware of the rise of radicalism in their countries, so various responses have been followed to protect themselves from the dangers of this ideology. Efforts undertaken by the campus include a policy of disseminating an understanding of religious or Islamic moderation wasatiyah. Meanwhile, the efforts made by students to fortify themselves include independent efforts through an independent search for knowledge and learning in class, friendship relations, student discussions, and access to social media. All efforts made by campuses and students are part of instrumental actions using campus institutions as bureaucracy. This paper argues that radicalism as a collective action can be anticipated through collective social action, such as by utilizing available instruments.

Abstract

Abstract

Almost all of the Church in Indonesia are still regarded a foreign entity in the midst of the larger society where it stands. It comes to happen because the Indonesian Church is often considered of not willing to open herself to create a dialogue with the society. In this case, Cornelius (Acts 10:34-43) as a transition personal could perhaps become inspiration for the Church in building a sincere dialogue with her circumstances. In this conversation, the unique personality of Cornelius as a transition personal succesfully made use the elements which belong to his pagan background and his religious background as a means for doing reciprocal repentance to him and to Peter. By doing this, at the same time, Cornelius placed himself as Peter’s equal partners of dialogue. Creating a dialogue with others is indeed a long unending process that really requires repentances from those who are involved in it.

Abstract

This research explores the role of Catholic Youth (Orang Muda Katolik or OMK) in responding to the challenges of intolerance in Indonesia, particularly in the province of West Java. By examining Catholic Church documents such as the "Abu Dhabi Document" and "Christus Vivit," as well as the Pastoral Focus of the Bandung Diocese for the year 2023, this study aims to understand how OMK comprehends and implements the values of brotherhood advocated by the Church. In the context of intolerance, especially in West Java, known as a region with high levels of intolerance, the research also explores concrete steps that OMK can take to build a more tolerant society. The study involves an analysis of OMK identity, with a focus on the characteristics of the millennial generation, and considers the impact of the document "Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together" and the results of the 2015 Synod of the Bandung Diocese. The results indicate that OMK plays a crucial role in fostering interfaith brotherhood, emphasizing dialogue, acceptance of differences, and participation in social action. With implications from Church documents, this research provides a strong foundation for OMK to develop a spirit of brotherhood, respect for differences, and engagement in social action as part of their social responsibility. In the context of pastoral guidance, the study highlights the importance of conscience as a moral guide and suggests pastoral strategies that can be applied to help OMK internalize faith values. Thus, this research provides profound insights into the role of the Catholic Church in promoting peace and brotherhood in the midst of religious intolerance. The results can serve as a basis for further development of strategies to address tolerance challenges at the local and national levels.

Abstract

Poverty is a social reality in the dynamics of human life in the world. This social reality is also part of the Church's concern. The Church pays attention, cares, and conveys its teachings about poverty and ways to overcome it through its dynamic structure, which includes Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium. This study is literature research, with Indonesian contextualization. By textual analysis, this paper shows that in reflecting on various realities related to poverty, especially by using the scalpel of Theology of Liberation, the Church has concluded that poverty, especially structural poverty, is the fruit of social sin. Social sin is an individual sin built in such a way with various kinds of conditioning to become a massive structure. This study recommends the need for personal and communal repentance to destroy this structure of sin and, at the same time, lift people out of structural poverty.

Abstract

Education is an essential matter for every individual to support both personal and social life. This has been an unchanged reality up to the present moment. The Church truly recognizes its significant role in education. However, with various changing contexts over different eras, the Church's response to education in each era also varies. Before the Second Vatican Council, the Church faced an educational situation influenced by Gallicanism, which sought to weaken the Church's influence on the state. The impact of Gallicanism on education was the existence of a state monopoly on education, leaving behind crucial aspects of education. Pope Pius XI, through Divini Illius Magistri, sought to address such a context. After the Second Vatican Council, the Church's stance, previously closed to the modern world, began to change. The Church became more open to the modern world, influencing its perspective on education. Education, which was previously more anti-modernism and anti-liberalism, has now become more open. This shift is conveyed in the document Gravissimum Educationis, published during the Second Vatican Council. The Church's development in responding to the evolving world of education is a tangible manifestation of its presence in the world.

Abstract

This study investigates the perceptions of tolerance held by students at UIN Bandung and Parahyangan Catholic University (UNPAR), two religiously affiliated postsecondary educational establishments in Bandung. The data for this research was gathered through document reviews and interviews using a qualitative methodology. Fifty students from UIN Bandung and fifty from UNPAR Bandung were interviewed. This study discovers that students' perceptions of their religious texts—the Bible and the Qur'an—have an impact on how tolerant they are Socially, it is discovered that Indonesians' conception of tolerance has a national dimension based on the national ideology. Religious and social concepts provide these kids with the foundation for tolerance in a variety of ways. Students at UIN Bandung continue to exhibit tolerance, but only within the framework of their religion—Islam. On the other hand, tolerance is practiced in both the social and individual environments at UNPAR, a campus that is more diverse and cosmopolitan. Collaboration strengthens the two student groups' tolerant attitudes. This collaboration later initiated the birth of the Halaqah Damai (Circle of Peace) as a forum for the two student groups to have dialogue and understand the essence of religious tolerance to be disseminated in their respective environments.

Abstract

Disasters are an inseparable part of the dynamics of human history. The texts of the Old Testament Scriptures contain various kinds of disaster narratives. In turn, these texts provide images and interpretations of disasters. There are three images and interpretations of Old Testament Scriptures for disasters. First, as God’s judgment and punishment. Second, as a result of human persecution of nature, and as a presence, power. Third, God’s sovereignty over nature. This study has two objectives: to describe images and interpretations and to find their relevance to the current meaning of disasters. First, it describes the imagery and interpretation of disasters in the Old Testament Scriptures. Second, find the significance of these images and interpretations in interpreting disasters in human life today. This research uses text analysis methods to achieve these two objectives as a qualitative literature study. This research finds the conclusion and the relevance of images and interpretations of disasters in the Old Testament Scriptures as an invitation to carry out ‘ecological repentance’. AbstrakBencana merupakan bagian yang tidak terpisahkan dari dinamika sejarah kehidupan manusia. Abstract

The prophetical offices are always started with prophetic call narrative. There are several unique elements in this prophetic call narrative, which can be found in prophetic call moments of the prophets, namely the role of God’s Words, the appearance of God (theophany) in its variety, and the delegation mission task. What is interesting to analyze is the variety of God’s appearances (theophany), since the varieties depend on the context of each prophet and the delegation mission tasks given to them. This article discusses the prophetic call narrative of Jeremiah. At first sight, the calling and delegation moments of Jeremiah resembles Isaiah and Ezekiel’s, especially in God’s hands and the prophet’s mouth activity. Nevertheless, in Jeremiah’s prophetic call narrative, God’s activities have a special meaning related to his context. In Jeremiah’s case, the act of God touching his mouth and putting His words into it is the emphasis of the authenticity of God’s Words that comes out of Jeremiah’s mouth. The authenticity is needed by Jeremiah because he has to face false prophets.
