Abstract

Betung bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) and andong bamboo (Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea) are non-timber forest products that can be used as a substitute for wood. However, both bamboos have light colors that are less aesthetic and susceptible to fungal and pest damage. Therefore, it is necessary to modify the bamboo. One of the modification methods used is oil heat treatment (OHT). This research aims to determine the effect of OHT on the color of betung and andong bamboo. This research was carried out the OHT using palm oil at temperatures of 180°C, 200°C, 220°C and 240°C for 2 hours. Color parameter measurements were observed using a colorimeter that implemented the CIE-Lab color system. The color parameters measured include brightness (L*), red/green chromaticity (a*), yellow/blue chromaticity (b*), and overall color change (∆E*). The percentage of bamboo weight loss after OHT was also observed. The research results show that the brightness value (L*) of betung bamboo and andong bamboo has decreased, so that the color becomes darker as the temperature increased. The a* and b* values decreased at all temperatures and durations. In addition, the value of ∆E* increased at all temperatures with a total change showing a value > 12. The decrease in weight of betung bamboo occurred at all temperatures. This heat treatment can make the bamboo color darker and more exotic, thereby increasing the added value of the product and improving the quality of bamboo from fungi and pests due to cellulose degradation.

Abstract

Calliandra biomass pellets offer a promising alternative energy source to replace fossil fuels. Typically, these pellets are produced by directly processing the stem and bark of the calliandra (Calliandra calothyrsus) plant without separation, aiming for manufacturing efficiency. This study investigated the quality differences between calliandra biomass pellets with and without bark and varying particle sizes. Particle sizes used were 20 mesh, 40 mesh, and 60 mesh. The pellets were made using a 12 mm diameter biomass pellet mold and a manual hydraulic press with a pressure of 3 tons. Characterization involved assessing proximate analysis, calorific value, physical and mechanical properties, and Fourier Transform Infrared analysis. The test results were compared with biomass pellet standards from Indonesia, Japan, Korea, and Germany. Results indicate that bark affects several properties, with higher ash content observed in pellets with bark due to the higher mineral content in bark. Volatile matter decreases with finer particle size, influencing combustion rate. Moisture content is higher in pellets with bark, impacting combustion efficiency and smoke production. Fixed carbon values are influenced by moisture and volatile matter content. Calorific values are generally higher in pellets without bark and smaller particle sizes. Density and compressive strength increase with decreasing particle size. FTIR analysis reveals differences in functional groups between pellets with and without bark, indicating variations in chemical composition. Overall, this research provides insight into the potential of calliandra biomass pellets with bark and without bark along with particle size as a renewable energy source.

This research aims to evaluate the effect of rubber wood sawdust addition on the moisture content, water absorption capacity, and compressive strength of paving blocks. The study was conducted in August–September 2023, starting with preparing raw materials, composition planning, and test specimen fabrication. The parameters in this study included density testing, moisture content, water absorption capacity, and compressive strength. The density test results for treatments P0 were 1.11 g/cm3, P1 1.09 g/cm3, P2 1.07 g/cm3, P3 1.08 g/cm3, and P4 1.09 g/cm3. The moisture content test yielded values of 11.38% for P0, 12.56% for P1, 12.94% for P2, 13.24% for P3, and 13.80% for P4. The water absorption capacity values obtained were, for P0, 5.17%; P1, 5.40%; P2, 6.36%; P3, 8.11%; and P4, 9.27%. Compressive strength tests produced values for P0 at 7.19 N/mm2, P1 at 5.67 N/mm2, P2 at 4.22 N/mm2, P3 at 3.48 N/mm2, and P4 at 3.07 N/mm2. The addition of rubber wood sawdust to paving blocks significantly influences density, moisture content, water absorption capacity, and compressive strength values. Keywords: Composition, Compressive strength, Paving block, Sawdust waste.

Abstract

Bamboo is one of the most abundant non-timber resources, flourishing globally across tropical and subtropical regions. Its increasing appeal lies in its environmental sustainability, robust mechanical properties, and high recyclability. Nonetheless, bamboo's inherent hydrophilicity presents significant challenges, particularly in achieving optimal compatibility for applications such as construction materials. Economic and environmentally friendly heat treatment techniques have emerged as pivotal strategies for improving bamboo's surface properties. This article comprehensively reviews the effects of varying thermal treatment conditions, including temperature, duration, and medium, on bamboo's structural characteristics.

Abstract

Laser technology has become one of the main innovations in material delivery, especially in the wood industry for cutting and engraving purposes. One of the advantages of this technology is the ability to produce precise and aesthetic patterns on the wood surface. However, each type of wood has unique characteristics to the heat treatment of the laser beam, so further research is needed to understand the specific response of each type of wood. This study aims to trigger the effect of variations in CO₂ laser power on changes in the surface color of cempaka wood (Michelia champaca) and to identify consumer preferences for the color results. The study was conducted at the Forest Products Technology Laboratory, University of Lampung, using three variations of laser power: 2.5 watts, 5 watts, and 7.5 watts, with each treatment repeated three times. The surface color was described using a CIE-Lab system-based colorimeter (parameters L*, a*, and b*) before and after engraving. In addition, a consumer preference survey was conducted boldly involving 100 students from the University of Lampung to assess the visualization of the engraving results. The results showed that higher laser power (7.5 watts) produced darker and more contrasting wood colors, with a decrease in L* values and an increase in a* and b* values. Most respondents preferred the results of engraving using 7.5 watts of power because it produced darker colors and was considered more aesthetic and gave sharper results.

Abstract

friendly material. Two local Indonesian bamboo species, namely apus bamboo(Gigantochloa apus) and ater bamboo (Gigantochloa atter), have been widelyused in various fields but still face challenges such as fading color and lowresistance to moisture. This study aims to investigate the color changes in apusbamboo and ater bamboo after undergoing heat treatment using oil at varyingtemperatures of 160°C, 180°C, 200°C, and 220°C. Five-year-old bamboo sampleswere cut into cylindrical shapes with a diameter of 10 cm and a height of 5 cm,then tested for color before and after the heat treatment. The treatment was carriedout for 2 hours using oil as a medium, then dried in an oven. Color changes wereanalyzed using a general colorimeter scanner. Data collection on communitypreferences for bamboo colors was conducted by distributing questionnaires. Thered-green chromaticity changes in apus bamboo exhibit a decreasing trend, whereas ater bamboo shows an increasing trend. The yellow-blue chromaticitychanges in both bamboo species show an increasing trend. For the lightness level, both bamboos have decreased. The overall color change in apus bamboo and aterbamboo increases with the increasing temperature. The color preference resultsrevealed that women prefer bright colors in both bamboo species. Men are moreselective in their color preferences; some choose bright colors, but many alsochoose dark colors.
