Abstract

The global commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) establishes access to safe drinking water and healthy sanitation for all residents. This study analyzes the financing and economic benefits of drinking water and sanitation service interventions using the Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) approach. The study used secondary data from the Health Office, the Bandar Lampung City Manpower Office, and the publication of research results. Intervention costs include the fixed and annual operating costs of the intervention. Benefits are calculated from the savings in health recovery costs, avoiding lost time from work, school, and waiting for sick children, and the acquisition of productive time. The study results get a total investment cost of $ 2,113,190 and a total benefit of $ 44,727,436. Efforts to improve water and sanitation services are effective and efficient (0.057% of GDP) and profitable ($ 22.20 return for every $ 1 investment). These results provide strong evidence for planners and decision-makers that improving water and sanitation services provides value for returns, both social and economical, and proves the possibility of accelerating the achievement of SDGs commitments.

Abstract

Abstract

The severity of human-wildlife conflict in buffer zone of The Way Kambas National Park (WKNP) Lampung Indonesia is a symptom of the biodiversity deterioration undergoing in the region. The absentia of local knowledge, lack of migrant’s knowledge about the intangible relation between land productivity degradation and biodiversity loss, the stagnation of ecological knowledge cascading to their migrant’s off spring are the special challenge both for communication development planners and educators to design communication medium or teaching material so that the cascading process works well. This research was objected to develop fable as communication medium or teaching material for elementary school especially for the local issues compatibility. This research consisted of field work and laboratory exercises from April to September 2008. The fieldwork was conducted in three villages in buffer zone of the District of East Lampung i.e: Brajayekti, Braja Luhur, and Braja Asri villages as the representation of Balinese, Javanese, and Sundanese respectively. The laboratory activities were conducted at the Lab of Photography and Lab of Multimedia of the University of Lampung. The essential messages contents were extracted from the previous research results (Nurhaida et al., 2007a and 2008a). The development of story setting, story boarding, graphical sketching, lettering, typographic and lay outing for the fable design were conducted by brain storming and discussion among us, the researchers. Whereas for graphical drawing was ordered to a professional painter. The graphical symbols were reproduced by digital camera then manipulated using computer software of Adobe Photoshop. Very firstly, Bahasa Indonesia was applied as the language then we translated to Balinese, Javanese and Sundanese languages. Draft of a-40 page of comic fable was printed on glossy white papers of A5 dimension. The media pre testing conducted by following Bertrand (1978 as adopted by Nurhaida, 2001 and 2007a) to measure the fabels’ effectiveess (their attraction, their self-involvement, their acceptability and their comprehension) for the elementary students. The results showed that the media reliability in conveying those messages were 78.4%; 78.7%; 79.0% and 79.9% for edition of the Bahasa Indonesia, the Javanese, the Sundanese, and the Balinese respectively. Because the readability of the student was in low continum i.e. 61.5 [Sd=13.8] words per minute, the media were considered as reliable for conveying the messages. It is strongly recommend that use media for extension program and teaching material for the aim at promoting biodiversity in NPWK bufferzone. Adapting the media for applying in the 23 other deteriorated Indonesian national parks’ bufferzone is strongly recommended as well.

Abstract

Control of HIV/AIDS infection can be done by screening at-risk groups in the social environment to prevent transmission. This study aims to determine the social environment of friends, family, and society’s influence on HIV/AIDS incidence. The study was conducted in December 2020–January 2021 at six Bandar Lampung health centers. The 111 respondents were divided into case/reactive and control/non-reactive groups, with a 1:2 ratio (37:74). Data were obtained by interview. The independent variables were the social environment of friends, family, and community, while the dependent variable was HIV/AIDS incidence. The data were analyzed bivariate and multivariate with the Binary Logistics Regression test utilizing Minitab 16 application, with CI 90% and α 0.1 significance level. The results showed that friends with HIV’s social environment had p 0.087; friend's education p 0.542; risky behavior from friends p 0.853; friends with risky behavior p 0,172; HIV family social environment p 0.999; family education p 0.999; risky behavior from family p 0.998; families with risky behavior p 0.999; HIV community social environment p 0.999; public education p 0.330; risk behavior from the community p 0.690; community with risky behavior p 0.862. Thus, only friends with HIV’s social environment affected HIV/AIDS incidence. Furthermore, having friends with HIV’s social environment will increase the risk of getting HIV/AIDS.

Abstract

Social capital of agroforestry’s community needs to be developed to enhance their productivity. It is because the physical capital has generally been very intensively utilized, as in Karang Rejo Village, Jati Agung Subdistrict, South Lampung Regency. This study aims to model [1] Total household income [Y-tot] as the function of 5 groups of variables (demographics, sources of income from other sectors, physical capital, social capital and access to information, and to model [2] the network as function of accessibility to information. A survey of 25 households was conducted in August 2019, to collect data of total income, demographics, physical capital (land tenure, ownership of motorbikes, cattle, goats, and chickens), accessibility (to cultivated land, to the village center, and to sub-districts), social capital performance (norm strength, trust, and network), access to information (participation in extension, watching TV habits, and cellphone signal strength). The ordinary least square was applied to build both for the Model [1] and Model [2]. The results showed that: [1] The total income [Y-Tot] can significantly be increased through the addition of physical capital as well as access to information (especially participation in extension), and [2] The elements of social network capital can be developed through the use of motorbikes, increasing community participation in extention, and reducing the frequency of watching TV.
