Abstract

Background: Hypertension or high blood pressure has been a common global health problem for several years. The content of nitrate within beetroot helps to increase production of nitric oxide (NO) which serves as a vasodilator and has potency to reduce blood pressure. This study aims to determine the potential effect of beetroot juice on reducing blood pressure. Methods: This study was a systematic review based on the PRISMA protocol as a writing guideline. Data were obtained from PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases. Keywords used consisted of “beetroot”, “beetroot juice”, “blood pressure”, and “hypertension.” The eligibility criteria were research written in English, years of publication from 2014 and above, and Randomized controlled trials of beetroot juice interventions on reducing blood pressure. Results: The literature search resulted in 376 records, and only 9 studies were in the systematic review. Six out of 9 studies showed significant results of blood pressure reduction, but the other three studies confirmed otherwise. A significant reduction of blood pressure was mostly observed in healthy subjects. The efficacy of beetroot juice supplementation is influenced by several factors, including gender, age, nutritional status (BMI), initial blood pressure, duration of supplementation, dose, and concentration of nitrate. Conclusions: Beetroot juice supplementation is not so useful on reducing blood pressure because it only has an acute effect in lowering blood pressure and its effects were also influenced by several factors. Key Words: beetroot juice, blood pressure, hypertension, a systematic review

Abstract

ABSTRACT          Stress triggers 4.7 times the risk and abnormal nutritional status triggers 2.8 times the risk of experiencing irregular menstrual cycle1. Stress level is one of the factors that affect the menstrual cycle and is often felt by final year health students. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between stress levels and the menstrual cycle in health students at Poltekkes Kemenkes Semarang. This type of research is quantitative analytic with cross sectional design. The sampling method used simple random sampling with a sample size of 131 respondents. The results of the study based on the Spearman-rho test showed that there was a relationship between stress levels and the menstrual cycle, p-value = 0.037 (p-value 0.05). The value of r or correlation coefficient is 0.182 means that the level of strength of the correlation between stress levels and the menstrual cycle in final year health students at Poltekkes Kemenkes Semarang is a weak correlation. While the positive relationship contained in the correlation coefficient means that the direction of the relationship is unidirectional, namely the increasing stress level, the more irregular or abnormal menstrual cycle. The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between stress levels and the menstrual cycle in health students at Poltekkes Kemenkes Semarang.

Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia is a decreasing number of red blood cells in the blood caused by too little iron in the blood system, especially for the adolescents. To increase the hemoglobin levels can be done by consuming lots of foods that contain a high protein and iron. Quail eggs have a higher protein and iron content among other eggs. The purpose of this study is to determine the different effect of the consumption of quail eggs to the hemoglobin and cholesterol levels in the adolescents. This study uses true experiment with pretest-posttest design with the control group. The population is a group of girl students aged 13-15 years old who was menstruating at SMP Al Munawir Gringsing, Batang district. The sampling technique used is simple random sampling. The hemoglobin and cholesterol levels were measured when the respondents were menstruating on the first day and the sixth day. The intervention group was given the quail eggs for 5 days during the menstruation and the control group was only observed. The results of the dependent t test hemoglobin level p-value intervention group 0,000 and p-value control group 0,000, and cholesterol p-value intervention group 0,012 and control group p-value 0,003, so it can be concluded that there is an effect of quail eggs consumption on the hemoglobin and cholesterol levels. The results of the independent test of the difference in hemoglobin p-value 0.001 and the difference in the level of cholesterol p-value of 0.002, so it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the consumption of the quail eggs on the hemoglobin and cholesterol levels. It is expected that the consumption of the quail eggs for the adolescents can be given as a daily menu in order to increase the hemoglobin levels.
