Abstract

The study focuses on interrogative sentence types and their syntactical analysis in the Encanto movie. The aims of this study are to find the types of interrogative sentences and to analyse sentence structure of interrogative sentences in the Encanto movie. The methods used to analyse the data are observation and qualitative methods. The main theory proposed by Cowan (2008) about interrogative sentences, and the supporting theory proposed by Brown and Miller (1991) about sentence structures. The results obtained are 123 data found consisting of three types of interrogative sentences, those are yes/no questions with a total data of 47 or 38,2% with each positive category yes/no questions containing 22 data, elliptical yes/no questions 4 data and declarative yes/no questions having 21 data which both types were included in the reduced yes/no questions. Then, there are 4 data or 3,3% from tag questions in the category opposite polarity questions. The last, there are wh-questions with total data of 72 or 58,5%. This study expects to contribute insight into interrogative sentences and their sentence structures, and helps students to learn syntax.

Abstract

This study's focus was to analyze Joe Biden's Instagram captions. The aim was to determine the derivational suffixes' types by using a theory proposed by Katamba (1993). The method of descriptive qualitative is used to represent the types of suffixes. The observation method was utilized by reading Instagram captions. Then in collecting data, a note-taking technique was applied by writing down the words with suffixes that belonged to the topic of the study. According to Katamba (1993), there were eleven types of derivational suffixes. Meanwhile, this study found nine types of suffixes because two types, such as -less and -full were not found. There was a total of 42 data with nine types of suffixes found. The data consist of suffixes; two -hood, one -ship, five -ness, five -ity, five -ment, one-ic, eight -al, four -er, eleven -ly. The aim of this research is to analyze the base structure of compound sentence used in Wattpad story entitled The Ephemeral: Breeder, and the compound sentence analyzed through a tree diagram. This study uses the observation method in collecting the data from the story. In analyzing the data, the writer uses a qualitative method to describe the base sentences in compound sentences. In this study the theory used to analyze the base sentences is the theory from Moeller (2021) about sentence structure. The other theory used is a theory proposed by Brown and Miller (1991) to classify the small unit through a tree diagram. The writer found 88 data over 13 selected chapters in the Wattpad story. Coordinating conjunction and become the most conjunction found in the compound sentences.

Abstract

The study of word that focus on learning how the word is made by a combination of one or more morpheme is also known as Morphology. This study aims to discover the types and function of derivational affixes found in the BBC News “War in Ukraine”. This research applied two methods such as descriptive qualitative method to provide a comprehensive explanation to each data found in the research and quantitative method used to showcase the frequency percentages of various types and functions of derivational affixes discovered from the data source. Multiple BBC News “War in Ukraine” that contains numerous derivational affixes phenomenon has been chosen to conduct this study. Based on the analysis, this study found 139 (66%) data noun derived from verb, 9 (4%) data adjective derived from verb, 2 (1%) data verb derived from noun, 17 (9%) data adjective derived from noun, 8 (4%) noun derived from adjective, 32 (15%) adverb derived from adjective. Those data found from the research emphasize that forming nouns through derivational affixes is a relatively straightforward process, making it the most prevalent type of data in the study.

Abstract

This research focused on analyzing class-changing derivational suffixes found in the article of BBC News: Earth Edition. In this research, class-changing derivational suffixes from BBC News: Earth Edition stories were analyzed using a qualitative method. The note-taking method applied in collecting data for this research. The data collection involved reading five selected articles from the BBC News: Earth Edition website, noting relevant information, and classifying the functions of derivational suffixes. This study applied the theory proposed by McCarthy (2002) in analyzing the morphological function of derivational suffixes in each word. By highlights how different suffixes modify the root word and how these modifications fit into broader morphological patterns, it helps in identifying systematic relationships between suffixes and the meanings they produce. Formal and informal methods were applied in this study in presenting the data. This study identified four functions of class-changing derivational suffixes, namely adverb derived from adjective (32%), adjective derived from noun (11%), verb derived from noun (0%), noun derived from verb (57%). The findings indicated that nouns derived from verbs were more frequently found in the online news stories of BBC News: Earth Edition.

Abstract

This research explores how derivational suffixes alter the meaning and grammatical category of words. The study analyzed derivational suffixes found in CNN News: Entertainment Edition, focusing on their types and functions. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, which involved reading the articles multiple times, selecting words with suffixes, and applying note-taking techniques to organize the data. Plag's (2002) theory was used to classify the derivational suffixes identified. CNN News was selected due to its up-to-date content and its status as a globally popular media outlet, widely read by diverse audiences. The analysis revealed a total of 233 derivational suffixes, categorized into four types: 4 instances of verb suffixes, 88 instances of adverb suffixes, 79 instances of nominal suffixes, and 62 instances of adjective suffixes. The results showed that adverb suffixes were the most prevalent in CNN News: Entertainment Edition. This finding suggested that adverbial modification played a significant role in the language of entertainment news. The study underscored the importance of understanding suffixes in analyzing contemporary media language.

Abstract

Coordination is a key syntactic device that links clauses to build coherent and rhetorically effective discourse. This study focuses on identifying the types of syndetic coordinators in compound sentences and examining their semantic relations in the introduction of Susan Cain’s Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking. The study aims to provide insight into how coordination strategies in nonfiction introductions contribute to both sentence structure and meaning. The analysis applied Quirk and Greenbaum’s (1974) framework to classify semantic implications and the application of constituent structure representation to illustrate syntactic patterns. The data were collected through an observation method and analysed using a descriptive qualitative approach. Based on the results, a total of 5 instances of “but,” 1 instance of “or,” and 6 instances of “and” were found. The conjunction “but” served an adversative function, expressing either contrast or denial of expectation; “or” introduced mutually exclusive alternatives in a rhetorical question; and “and” performed additive functions, indicating either temporal sequence or pure addition, with some cases of subject ellipsis. The frequent use of “and” indicates the author’s preference for smooth additive and sequential linking to develop narrative flow in the introduction. These findings reveal that the syntactic form of each coordinator reinforces its semantic role, demonstrating the close relationship between structure and meaning in nonfiction prose.
