Abstract

Abstract. Oral health issues in children are a significant global public health concern. Factors such as dietary habits, socioeconomic status, and level of knowledge affect the prevalence of dental caries, periodontal diseases, and other oral health conditions. In Indonesia, especially in urban areas like Surabaya, growing attention is paid to children's oral health. This study aimed to assess children's dental and oral health status in Kelurahan Simokerto, Surabaya, and identify associated risk factors. The sample is 38 children aged 3-11 years in Kelurahan Simokerto. Data were gathered through clinical exams. Results showed a high prevalence of dental caries and poor oral hygiene practices, such as infrequent brushing and limited flossing. Socioeconomic factors, including parental education and household income, were linked to the children's oral health status. These findings highlight the need for targeted oral health promotion programs in Kelurahan Simokerto, focusing on improving oral hygiene practices, encouraging regular dental check-ups, and addressing socioeconomic determinants of oral health. The study highlights the need for long-term, community-driven interventions to address dental caries and improve oral health outcomes, as short-term efforts showed no significant changes in DEFT and OHIS frequencies in Kelurahan Simokerto.

Abstract

Dental caries remains a prevalent public health issue, particularly in rural areas with limited access to dental care. This study aimed to assess the oral health status of residents in Randegansari Village through dental screening and DMF-T score analysis. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 15 participants aged 13–65 years. The results showed a high DMF-T score, with missing teeth contributing the most. The high prevalence of tooth loss and untreated caries indicated inadequate access to dental care and a lack of awareness regarding oral hygiene. The primary challenges identified were the absence of preventive measures and limited access to restorative treatment. To address this issue, educational programs on oral health, preventive interventions such as fluoride applications, and improved access to dental care are essential. The study concludes that increased community awareness and dental services are necessary to reduce caries prevalence and improve oral health in rural populations.

Abstract

Background: Dental anxiety is a common psychological condition that affects individuals undergoing conservative dental procedures such as root canal therapy and restorative treatments. It influences not only a patient’s decision to seek care but also their perception of treatment outcomes and overall quality of life related to oral health. Purpose: This literature review aims to evaluate the relationship between dental anxiety and oral health, particularly its impact on the quality of life of patients undergoing endodontic and restorative dental treatments. Reviews: Dental anxiety is closely associated with increased pain perception, reduced cooperation, and decreased trust in dental professionals. Patients with high anxiety often experience greater discomfort and dissatisfaction, reflected in difficulties eating, speaking, and socializing. Studies consistently show that anxiety can impair treatment experiences and outcomes, while proper management leads to improved oral health and well-being. Effective strategies such as clear communication, empathetic interaction, and adequate pre-treatment preparation are proven to reduce fear and enhance patient satisfaction. Conclusion: Dental anxiety has a significant effect on many aspects of a patient's well-being before, during, and after conservative dental procedures. By adopting a caring and personalized approach, dental professionals can help alleviate anxiety and support improved treatment experiences and outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Aesthetic treatments in conservative dentistry, such as tooth whitening, veneers, and composite restorations, have become increasingly popular as more patients seek to enhance their appearance. Unlike therapeutic procedures, these treatments are often elective and based on personal preferences, which brings forward important ethical and legal questions. One of the key aspects is how dentists ensure that patients truly understand the benefits, risks, and alternatives before making a decision. Purpose: This review aims to examine the ethical and legal dimensions of informed consent in aesthetic conservative dentistry, with particular reference to Indonesia's Law No. 17/2023 concerning Health. It explores how dental professionals are expected to balance patients' aesthetic desires with ethical responsibilities and legal duties. Reviews: The discussion covers core ethical principles, including autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice as the foundation of a meaningful consent process. It also examines the latest national regulation, which outlines patient rights and dentist responsibilities, particularly Law No. 17/2023 concerning Health. Since aesthetic procedures are not always medically necessary, they require extra care in communication and documentation to ensure proper patient care and treatment. Conclusion: Informed consent in aesthetic dental care should not be treated as a formality. It is a vital ethical practice that ensures patients feel respected and well-informed. For dentists, especially those involved in aesthetic procedures, it is important to apply both ethical reflection and legal awareness in every step of patient care. Following Law No. 17/2023 concerning Health, maintaining open and honest communication fosters trust and supports safe, responsible treatment.

Abstract

Access to dental services is critical in determining public health status, yet significant disparities persist, especially in remote areas. This literature review explores the impact of limited access to dental care on public health. The review methodology involved analyzing recent studies addressing the various factors—economic, geographical, and social determinants—influencing access to dental services in different communities. The results indicate that individuals with restricted access to dental care are more prone to oral diseases, which can lead to a decline in overall health and quality of life. Furthermore, these communities often face higher treatment costs due to the need for more complex procedures when issues are untreated for extended periods. The findings highlight that limited access to dental services increases the burden on healthcare systems and exacerbates inequalities in health outcomes. In conclusion, improving access to dental services, particularly in underserved and rural areas, is essential to mitigate the negative effects of oral diseases, reduce healthcare costs, and improve public health outcomes in the long term. Addressing these disparities is crucial for promoting equitable health opportunities for all.

Abstract

Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent chronic diseases, especially in developing countries like Indonesia. In Desa Randegansari, East Java, low awareness and poor oral hygiene contribute significantly to its high incidence. This community service program aimed to improve oral hygiene knowledge among adult residents in Desa Randegansari through a single-session education using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. The session focused on key preventive topics, including the frequency and technique of toothbrushing, appropriate brushing duration, the effects of sugary foods, and common risk factors for dental caries. Before and after the session, participants completed a standardized questionnaire to assess changes in knowledge. Participants completed a questionnaire before and after the session. Results showed increased knowledge, particularly in brushing frequency (47.37% to 68.42%) and duration (36.84% to 63.16%), though understanding of the effects of sugar consumption declined slightly (89.47% to 73.68%). The number of participants answering all questions correctly rose from 0% to 21.05%. The results showed a notable increase in the number of correct responses after the session, indicating that even a single educational intervention can significantly enhance public awareness and understanding of oral health. This program highlights the effectiveness of a participatory, context-based educational model designed for rural populations with limited access to dental care. This approach helped rural communities build on existing knowledge while learning healthier habits. It proves that small, focused efforts can lead to meaningful improvements in public health awareness.

Abstract

Forensic odontology plays an important role in the identification of individuals, particularly in situations where other identification methods are no longer applicable. Conservative dentistry generates comprehensive clinical data, including restorations, radiographic images, and treatment history, which have the potential to support forensic identification processes. This study aims to analyze the role of conservative dental records in supporting forensic odontological identification from a public health perspective. The method used is a narrative review based on scientific literature published between 2020 and 2026 that is relevant to the topic. The results indicate that dental records serve as reliable and individualized antemortem data, contributing significantly to the accuracy of identification, especially in mass disaster scenarios. However, their utilization remains limited due to challenges such as lack of standardization, inconsistent documentation quality, and absence of integrated database systems. Advances in digital dentistry and artificial intelligence offer opportunities to improve the efficiency and accuracy of identification processes, although ethical and regulatory aspects must be carefully considered. In conclusion, strengthening the quality, standardization, and integration of dental records is essential to support effective forensic identification systems and public health frameworks.

Abstract

The implementation of electronic medical records in dental practice raises legal issues that extend beyond administrative concerns to include the protection of patient rights and legal certainty for dental professionals. The enactment of Law Number 17 of 2023 on Health strengthens the obligation to adopt digital medical records while simultaneously creating potential normative tensions with personal data protection and technical regulations on medical records. This study aims to analyze the legal protection of electronic medical records in dental practice and to identify normative gaps that may weaken legal protection for both patients and healthcare professionals. This research employs a normative juridical method using statutory and conceptual approaches by examining health legislation, personal data protection law, and relevant implementing regulations. The findings indicate that electronic medical records occupy a strategic position as both clinical documentation and legal evidence; however, the existing regulatory framework has not yet ensured proportional legal certainty. Ambiguities in the allocation of legal responsibility, potential normative disharmony, and the absence of specific regulations for dental practice may expose patients and dental professionals to legal risks. Therefore, regulatory strengthening and normative harmonization are required to ensure that the digitalization of medical records effectively safeguards patient rights and professional accountability.

Abstract

Tooth wear is a progressive loss of dental hard tissue commonly associated with parafunctional activities such as bruxism and clenching. In badminton athletes, physiological and psychological stress during training and competition may increase sleep bruxism activity, thereby accelerating occlusal surface wear and disrupting the stomatognathic system. The use of night guard or occlusal splint has been recommended as a conservative therapy to stabilize occlusal force distribution, reduce destructive tooth contact and decrease masticatory muscle hyperactivity during bruxism episodes. This literature review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) approach to evaluate the effectiveness of night guard use in reducing tooth wear and to examine its implications for focus and concentration in badminton athletes within the field of sports dentistry. Literature searches were performed through PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar for articles published between 2020 and 2025. The findings indicate that night guards are effective in reducing bruxism activity, minimizing excessive occlusal load and providing protective effects on enamel and dentin. Occlusal stabilization may also influence neuromuscular function and athletic performance readiness. However, evidence regarding its direct effects on athletes’ focus and concentration remains limited and requires further investigation. Keywords – Bruxism, Night Guard, Tooth Wear.

Abstract

Oral and dental health remain important public health issues because they directly affect overall well-being and quality of life. Community-based Puskesmas play a crucial role in promoting preventive oral health habits within the community. This study explored levels of knowledge, attitudes, and daily practices regarding oral health among community members at Pegirian Puskesmas. A descriptive study was conducted with 50 participants who took part in an oral health education activity. The analysis revealed that most participants possessed good knowledge and held very positive attitudes toward oral health; however, these attitudes were not always reflected in their everyday practices. The primary challenge identified was the disparity between what people know and how they apply it in their daily lives. For this reason, health education was delivered with an emphasis on strengthening behaviour and providing practical guidance. The results indicated that attitudes were the strongest aspect, followed by knowledge, while oral health practices remained the weakest. In conclusion, oral health promotion efforts should not only aim to increase knowledge and improve attitudes but also place greater focus on behaviour-based approaches to achieve lasting oral health outcomes.
