Abstract

The coral reef ecosystem has been continuously degraded in various parts of Indonesia, including the Anambas Islands. This research aimed to discover the content of Potassium Cyanide (KCN) accumulated on corals and the effect on indicator fishes abundance in the Anambas Islands. This research was conducted at 25 observation stations in the Anambas Islands National Marine Protected Area. The potassium cyanide (KCN) content was tested with the principle of titration and distillation. The coral samples used ranged from 10-20 g diluted in 100-200 ml distilled water. The method used to determine the abundance of indicator fish was underwater visual census or UVC, which recorded fish in every station. This research recorded 307 fish individuals from 14 species of the Chaetodontidae family. Potassium Cyanide's content on corals was high ranging from 0,009-0,032 mg/L with an average 0,0205 mg/L. We concluded that there was a negative correlation between the content of Potassium Cyanide (KCN) on corals and indicator fishes abundance, which means the higher the Potassium Cyanide content (KCN) is on corals, the lower the indicator fishes abundance will point out.

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems are important coastal ecosystems that provide a variety of functions. Mangrove ecosystems provide a variety of environmental services including absorbing carbon and contributing to climate change mitigation, protecting coastal areas from storms, tsunamis, and erosion. In addition to providing a variety of environmental services, these ecosystems are also habitats for a variety of living organisms, both aquatic and terrestrial, resident and migrant, also nationally and internationally protected species. The benefits provided by mangrove are contrast to the rate of degradation, which has the potential for loss of wildlife habitat and a decrease in biodiversity value, especially mammals. This study was conducted to analyse the value of biodiversity, especially mammals in the Mangrove Ecotourism Area, Pesawaran Regency. This study uses the method of line transects, mist nets, and sound identification. The results of the study recorded 6 species of mammals with a species diversity value (H') of 1.46, richness of 1.60, evenness of 0.72, and species dominance of 0.30. Mammal species diversity inside the ecotourism area is higher than outside the area. Protected mammals are not found in the area.

Abstract

Climate change and global warming continue to occur up to the present. One of the gases significantly influencing climate change is carbon dioxide (CO2). The increase in CO2 can be mitigated by capturing carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in biomass in a process known as carbon sequestration. Forests play a crucial role as a mitigator in reducing global warming and climate change, acting as both a carbon sink and absorber. Mangrove forests, in particular have a high capacity for carbon storage, approximately three times more than terrestrial forests. This research aims to (1) assess the health condition of the mangrove forests in Pesawaran Regency and (2) estimate the CO2 absorption produced by Pesawaran Regency. The study utilizes Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and field data collection. Sentinel-2 images undergo Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) transformation. The research results indicate that the mangrove forests in Pesawaran Regency in 2023 are predominantly in good condition, covering an area of 562,31 hectares (99%), while 6,12 hectares (1%) are in a degraded condition. The CO2 absorption by the mangrove forests pesawaran regency is estimated to be 336.367,47 tons CO2  and 591,75 tons CO2/ha.
