Abstract

Across Indonesia, the dominant model for care and support in later life is for older people to live with or near younger family members. However, coresidence with an adult child or other close relative is not always attainable or preferred. There are conditions where older people live alone and cannot fully depend on their family members for care and support, be it for matters related to physical, economic, psychological, or spiritual needs. We examine how older people who live alone, live their lives and what strategies they pursue in facing life. The data presented in this paper are a subset of a larger comparative study on Older People’s Care Networks, which covered five disparate sites across Indonesia. This article focuses on evidence from West Sumatra and Yogyakarta. As our case studies illustrate, older people living alone is a diverse category, ranging from those with children, to those who are de facto childless or actually childless. Their security or vulnerability cannot simply be deduced from their household composition, but they require the understanding of how people create, maintain, and develop supportive networks and how they use agency in actively managing dependence, independence, and interdependence over the life course and in later life.

Abstract

Malnutrition, especially the stunting category, is a big problem for the people in Pasaman today, because it has a broad impact on aspects of life which include health, social, culture and the economy. This study aims to identify the knowledge of the people in Pasaman about fulfilling nutrition at 1000 HPK and knowing the eating patterns of the Pasaman community at 1000 HPK. This study used qualitative research methods. Data was collected through participatory observation techniques and in-depth interviews. With the number of informants as many as 35 people. The results showed that in general, the community's knowledge of fulfilling nutrition in 1,000 HPK had received counseling and socialization from the village midwife and Posyandu cadres. However, this knowledge has not been seen in the people's diet at 1,000 HPK. The practice of daily eating patterns during the 1,000 HPK era was still the same as the  habits that occurred before there was counseling. Food for pregnant and lactating women is prioritized is a matter of taste and preference, not about the nutritional content of food. Likewise with baby food 0-6 years, mothers already know that babies must be given exclusive breastfeeding, but there are still some mothers who do not give breast milk, because they think that breast milk is not filling for babies.

Abstract

The implementation of Community Service (PKM) aims to provide a deep understanding to students who join the Damal Student Association (APMD) of Puncak Regency, Papua, in Jayapura City about the importance of development in the Papua region through living in mutual understanding in a multicultural society. The method of implementing this Community Service (PKM) is carried out directly by a team with two competent presenters with lecture techniques, discussions, and students providing opinions, and their respective arguments with problems that occur in the Papua region. Community Service (PKM) was carried out at the Damal Student Dormitory Building located in Prumnas 1, Waena, Heram District, Jayapura City, Papua Province on July 30, 2025. The results and implications of this community service (PKM) program show that students are enthusiastic in discussing Multicultural, Papua, and development. Development in Papua, in various aspects, is very much needed by its people, because it can improve their welfare. Papua does not only live one ethnicity, but has many ethnicities, both indigenous Papuans and non-Papuans. This region is increasingly multicultural, encompassing ethnicities, races, religions, cultures, and more. Therefore, the entire community needs to be educated on the importance of mutual understanding to minimize conflict and division within the community. Through this Community Service (PKM) program, all participants learned that respecting, honoring, and understanding cultural diversity can lead to regional progress, as "our cultures may differ, but we are united in the development of Papua".
