Abstract

Abstract

This paper shows the commodification process that occurs in Kampung Adat Sijunjung to support the development of rural tourism. The commodification process can be seen in the use of Rumah Gadang as a homestay place for guests. Rumah Gadang for the Minangkabau people is not just a place to live but a space and cultural symbol. So that if it is used as a homestay it will cause a dilemma, on the one hand Rumah Gadang needs to be maintained as a distinctive Minangkabau cultural monument and on the other hand the tourism aspect can have an economic impact on the people of Sijunjung. The dualism of Rumah Gadang as a cultural product and tourism product is what results in commodification to develop tourism in rural areas. The method used was thorough observation of Rumah Gadang and interviewing 15 residents and Ninik Mamak (traditional ruler) as members of the tribe that owns Rumah Gadang. In addition, Rumah Gadang continues to function as a place and space for social and cultural activities of the Sijunjung community. So that the values and norms that exist in Rumah Gadang as a symbol of Minangkabau culture continue to run and through homestays, the Sijunjung community can obtain additional economic benefits from the tourism sector.

Abstract

The Mentawai ethnic community on Sipora Island is one of the ethnic groups that consume local food passed down from generation to generation by their ancestors. Even though rice and other foods are easy to find, they still make bananas, taro, and toek as their daily staple food. Abstract

The food problem in Mentawai has been a polemic since the New Order (Soeharto's government) due to the development program. The FSVA (Food Security and Vulnerability) report shows that Mentawai Islands Regency is the only food-insecure district in West Sumatra Province. This is a dilemma due to the food transition from sago to rice, the resettlement program, and forest destruction caused by timber companies. This research looks at three major areas of the Mentawai Islands: Siberut Island, Sipora Island, and Pagai Island. Through a descriptive approach, 20 informants from the three islands were selected, and interviews, observations, and a literature review were conducted. Data were analyzed step-by-step. The results show that the mission to modernize the Mentawai people has disrupted their food security. The modern development program has changed the living habits of the Mentawai people, especially regarding food. The native food of the Mentawai people switched to rice and was forced to adjust due to the scarcity of sago because the forest has been commercialized into production forests. They were also moved from traditional houses to settlements built by social programs (Resettlement of Terasing Communities). The development program becomes a discourse that binds the facts of domination, reproduction, and socio-politics. Thus, we forget the local wisdom that grows and develops in the Mentawai community about food.

Abstract

The research objective was to explore the intersection of culture and tourism in Sarugo Village, West Sumatra. Specifically, the research aimed to elucidate this integration’s positive and negative impacts on the local culture to ensure cultural survival. The research sought to understand how cultural values were transformed into tourism products and services. The research employed an ethnographic approach, utilizing data collection methods such as observation and in-depth interviews with 15 participants. The research focused on the local community’s management of traditional houses, like Rumah Gonjong, which were transformed into homestays to accommodate overnight guests. The research results indicate that cultural aspects, crucial elements in the lives of people in Sarugo Village, are modified into tourism products. Specifically, Rumah Gonjong has been transformed into a homestay, demonstrating how the private sphere is converted into a public sphere within the tourism industry. This transformation has led to an economic increase for the local community, as the managers of the Rumah Gonjong now provide additional income. Consequently, the Rumah Gonjong is maintained, and the tourism industry’s consequences contribute to the cultural survival of the Sarugo Village community. Integrating culture and tourism in Sarugo Village highlights potential benefits and challenges, showcasing how sustainable tourism practices can preserve and promote local traditions.

Abstract

This study examines the Mentawai struggle to perform their cultural identity in the middle of hegemonic influence development and policies which contradicts their cultural identity and which gives rise to a cultural crisis. Critical anthropology's view shows that humans have the potential to create creativity and customisation. However, the Mentawai are limited and suppressed by social factors, cultural conditions, and exploited by the authorities. It means that the reality as Mentawai is not created by nature, but by humans, who have the power to manipulate the condition and patent the meaning that suits his own mind that is full of conflict, illusion, and distortion. Mentawai are in a ‘false consciousness’ that modernisation helps them to see the better world and have consciously stuttered (cultural backwardness) from that subconscious condition. Culture is deliberately clashed with modernisation in various elements of life such as in customs, language, food, and lifestyle. Furthermore, the generalization of development programmes also intervenes to sharpen the domination to narrow down the socio-cultural life of the Mentawai. However, they are not rigid. They practice cultural tactics (cultural meaning) in order to keep up with modernisation. They also consider modernisation and globalization as ‘interaction spaces’ in which the contestation of various elements of human life take place.

Abstract

his article aims to demonstrate the presence of the Batin Sembilan indigenous population in the Hutan Harapan area within the PT REKI (Ecosystem Restoration) concession in Jambi Province. The Batin Sembilan community's existence is a paradox amidst efforts to preserve the forest, which is facing a rapidly escalating rate of destruction and requires restoration. PT REKI-Hutan Harapan must not only focus on restoring the forest, but also on upholding the rights of the indigenous people residing within it. Ethnographic research conducted on the Batin Sembilan community, which continues to exist in the Hutan Harapan area, reveal the correlation between forest restoration and the sustenance of human existence inside it. The findings indicate that the Batin Sembilan population, who rely on forest resources, persistently endeavor to adjust to the constraints imposed by limited forest access. Hutan Harapan implements a comprehensive approach that includes resettlement, empowerment, and active involvement of the Batin Sembilan community in forest conservation activities. This strategy aims to ensure the long-term viability of the environment, which in turn has positive effects on both the livelihoods of the community and the fertility of the forest.

Abstract

Myths, rituals and life stories are interconnected and conveyed through long-standing oral traditions, making them important cultural assets of indigenous peoples around the world. In the Mentawai Islands, myths and rituals are inseparable from the daily lives of the people. The myths are not only communicated within the community but also revealed to outsiders. This research deviates from earlier literature as it aims to explore the relationship between traditional rituals, life stories, myths and modern dynamics in the different valleys to trace the ancestral claims of land ownership. The study employed a qualitative approach. Data was collected through observation and in-depth interviews with Sikerei (shaman), clan elders and notable clan individuals in the thinly populated watersheds in south Siberut Island, complemented by a literature review. The findings show that various rituals and myths about the life journey of the Mentawai people are important to current values. Extended with a unique culture of body tattoos, botanical knowledge, sago staple food consumption combined with animal protein feasts. It can be concluded that myths have a relationship with their living practices they lived, the formation and strengthening of their cultural identities, belief systems and clan land claims in Mentawai. It suggests their indigenous knowledge can opens up a power to see what is not evident to the average mind and contributes to different shades of feeling and experiences.

Abstract

This paper discusses the conflict that occurred on land owned by PT. PHP I, which was occupied by the Nagari Kapa community as their customary land. The community requested land rights in order to gain access to the land based on the Babingkah Adat customary system. Therefore, this paper analyses the nature of customary provisions in land ownership and the community's actual motives for occupying PT. PHP I's land. Using critical ethnography approach, it analyses social relations, social inequality, and capitalist hegemony in the palm oil industry. Data was collected using participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and text analysis of the perspectives of the community, traditional leaders, and the legality of land use. The study shows that the transfer of land by traditional leaders (ninik mamak) Nagari Kapa to the state (West Pasaman government) in 1997 was a statement that contained political, legal, and customary elements. Therefore, the customary framework cannot be accessed and cannot be fully applied. The customary framework cannot be accessed and cannot be fully applied. The occupation of land by the Nagari Kapa community represents their resistance and resilience to defend their land. They are not only fighting and reclaiming the land taken by PT. PHP I, but also opposing the arbitrary actions of their ninik mamak, who unilaterally handed over the land to another party. Thus, the social awareness of occupying PHP I's land is a form of aspiration and resistance by the community to reclaim their land rights..
