Abstract

Coaches significantly influence athletes' needs and psychological performance by influencing the motivational climate in sports. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between the motivational climate of coaches and the anxiety of handball players before competitions, with a special emphasis on gender disparities in sports. The population in this study is the West Java National Sports Week Handball team, which totals 30 athletes. The sample in this study uses the total sampling method, so the sample in this study is 30. The data collection technique in this study uses the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire-2 and the Competitive Sport Anxiety Inventory-2R questionnaire. The data analysis technique in this study uses a simple correlation test analysis using the product moment correlation formula and a quantitative descriptive methodology with the help of SPSS. These findings show that the level of anxiety and motivational atmosphere of coaches is significantly positively correlated in both male athletes (p-value 0.008) and female athletes (p-value 0.000). Based on descriptive statistical analysis, male athletes had a greater average level of anxiety (45.7550) than female athletes (40.5709). In contrast, female athletes were more influenced by the motivational climate (average score of 89.9769) than male athletes (84.3422). Based on the study's findings, gender has an impact on anxiety ahead of the competition, and male and female athletes react differently to pre-competition stress.

Abstract

Despite the growing interest in the psychological factors influencing athletic performance, research on the interplay of MT, SS, and achievement motivation, specifically within the context of women's futsal, remains limited. This study explores the relationship between mental toughness, social support, and achievement motivation among female futsal athletes in Indonesia. This research gathered 18 female futsal athletes using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and the Sports Mental Toughness Questionnaire (SMTQ) in a quantitative descriptive manner. The collected data will be analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 25 software, with a focus on descriptive statistics, correlation, and linear regression analyses. The MSPSS evaluates perceived social support from sources like family and friends, while the SMTQ measures mental toughness, focusing on aspects such as self-confidence and resilience. The study results show that a correlation between MT and SS of 0.429 was found by statistical analysis; however, this association was not statistically significant (Sig. > 0.05). Descriptive analysis indicated that SS had a higher mean score (33.6403) compared to MT (31.2378), suggesting a higher perceived level of social support among participants. These findings highlight the need for further research to understand these dynamics comprehensively. This study contributes to understanding the psychological and social factors affecting the performance and well-being of female futsal athletes. It suggests the necessity for targeted interventions and support strategies.

Abstract

The motivational climate in sports is a crucial factor affecting athlete performance and well-being in both team and individual sports. This study compares the motivational climate between team and individual athletes. Using a quantitative descriptive method, the research involved 15 handball team athletes and 15 individual taekwondo athletes from West Java, selected through purposive sampling. All participants were female, aged 17 to 26 years, with a minimum of 3 years of competitive experience. Data were collected using the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire (PMCSQ-2). Results showed that team athletes had a slightly higher motivational climate (M = 44.99, SD = 10.19) compared to individual athletes (M = 41.50, SD = 10.47). Team athletes also scored higher in ego and task orientations, with means of 44.23 and 45.74, respectively, while individual athletes scored 39.62 and 43.38. These findings suggest that team sports foster a more positive motivational climate due to stronger social support and group dynamics. Individual athletes focused more on skill mastery and personal goals, facing greater responsibility. This research provides insights for coaches and managers to improve the motivational climate in both team and individual sports, helping athletes achieve optimal performance and maintain mental health. Coaches should focus on individual athletes' personal achievements and support systems to enhance their well-being.

Abstract

Background Problems: Anxious athletes often doubt their ability to manage stress and achieve goals. Developing self-efficacy is vital as it enhances performance and confidence while reducing stress. There is a research gap in exploring the relationship and differences between self-efficacy and pre-competitive anxiety across athletes in sports with varying characteristics. Research Objectives: Considering the lack of research on self-efficacy in Pencak Silat, this study aims to deepen understanding of how self-efficacy impacts performance, particularly when comparing individual and team categories in Pencak Silat. Methods: Sample selection used the Purposive Sampling technique, with criteria including individual and team categories in Pencak Silat consisting of 30 athletes, including 15 individual and 15 team categories from Pencak Silat PON Jawa Barat and PAL Kota Bandung athletes. The research design used is a correlation and comparative study, with data collection employing a quantitative method. The measurement tools used were the CSAI-2R and the GSES. The data were analysed using correlation tests to measure the relationship between anxiety levels and self-efficacy, and independent sample t-tests were used to compare differences between the two groups in terms of anxiety and self-efficacy level. Finding and Results: The results of the correlation test show that there is a relationship between anxiety and self-efficacy with the Pearson value for teams (-0.532) and individuals (0.771), and the results of the hypothesis show a significant difference between the two categories (0.001 < 0.05). Conclusion: The study found significant differences in anxiety and self-efficacy between individual and team pencak silat athletes, emphasising the need for tailored psychological approaches to enhance performance. Future research could explore targeted mental training programmes, track changes over time, or examine other martial arts or athlete groups for deeper insights.

Abstract

Abstract

Eating disorders are prevalent among athletes, impacting their physical and psychological health. This study examines the influence of psychosocial factors—specifically stress and social support—on eating disorders among senior and junior athletes. A descriptive quantitative approach was used, with taekwondo athletes from SLOMPN UPI and the West Java Taekwondo Team selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using three validated questionnaires: the Eating Disorder Screen for Athletes (EDS-A), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Athletes Received Support Questionnaire. Statistical analysis, including Two-Way ANOVA and descriptive statistics, was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics Version 25. Results showed a significant impact of psychosocial factors on eating disorders for both senior and junior athletes (p < 0.05). Senior athletes exhibited higher mean scores for eating disorders (20.53), stress (33.62), and social support (70.14) compared to junior athletes, who had mean scores of 18.94, 28.91, and 64, respectively. Despite receiving more social support, senior athletes experienced higher stress levels, which correlated with a greater risk of eating disorders. Conversely, junior athletes with lower stress levels showed a reduced risk of eating disorders, highlighting the importance of strong social support networks. These findings suggest that interventions should focus on enhancing social support and stress management tailored to different age groups. Future research should explore gender differences in psychosocial factors affecting eating disorders to develop more targeted interventions.
