Abstract

Developments in probiotic therapy have shown potential to help improve gastrointestinal health. Several studies have been conducted to test the benefits of probiotic use, both in the context of prevention and treatment of various diseases. This article reviews various research results related to the potential use of probiotics in metabolic syndrome. The literature discussing the mechanism of action of probiotics and clinical evidence for their use in conditions such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, and non-alcoholic liver disease are comprehensively reviewed. Although further research is needed, the management of gut microbiota through probiotic administration shows promising prospects as a complementary strategy in the management of metabolic syndrome. The imbalance of gut microbiota, known as dysbiosis, can contribute to the development of various metabolic diseases (Patel, R. and DuPont, L, H., 2015). Recent studies have shown that probiotic administration can improve the composition and function of gut microbiota, thereby helping to prevent or improve symptoms of various diseases associated with metabolic syndrome (Shi, Q. et al., 2022). One of the main mechanisms of probiotics is through their ability to maintain the balance of gut microbiota. By suppressing the growth of pathogenic bacteria and improving the composition of the gut microbiota, probiotics can help overcome problems associated with dysbiosis.

Abstract

In this study, data were collected from various relevant studies and analyzed in relation to the patterns of vitamin D consumption among subjects experiencing hair loss. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in the process of cell regeneration and the regulation of the hair growth cycle. As a result, a deficiency in this vitamin can contribute to conditions like alopecia. Using a literature review research method, information sources were obtained from academic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and JSTOR. The collected data were analyzed to identify common patterns, study conclusions, and variability in results. This review indicates a significant association between vitamin D deficiency and increased hair loss, as well as the potential benefits of vitamin D supplementation in individuals with this deficiency.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem in toddlers characterized by the height of children who are shorter than children of the same age. Stunting in children is a serious problem, because it is associated with the risk of greater morbidity and mortality, obesity and non-communicable diseases in the future, short adults, poor cognitive development, and low productivity and income. The aim of the study to determine the relationship between hygiene and environmental sanitation with the incidence of stunting in toddlers in the Dadok Tunggul Hitam Community Health Center in 2021. Methods using a correlative analytic study with a cross-sectional approach. The sample was selected using a total sampling technique of 55 toddlers representing all toddlers recorded at the Dadok Tunggul Hitam Puskesmas, Koto Tangah District, Padang City in 2021. This research was conducted from April 2020 to February 2021. Univariate data analysis was presented in the form of frequency and percentage distributions and bivariate analysis using the chi-square test and data processing using the computerized SPSS version 16.0 program. The most toddlers in the Dadok Tunggul Hitam Puskesmas area in 2021 aged> 36 months were 27 people (49.1%), the most under-five in the Dadok Tunggul Hitam Puskesmas area in 2021 were female 30 people (54.5%), more than half of toddlers in the Dadok Tunggul Hitam Health Center Area in 2021 did not experience stunting, namely 42 people (76.4%), more than half of children under five in the Dadok Tunggul Hitam Health Center Area in 2021 has a status of healthy environmental hygiene and sanitation, namely 37 people (67.3%), and there is a relationship between hygiene and environmental sanitation with the incidence of stunting in children under five in the Dadok Tunggul Hitam Community Health Center in 2021 (p = 0.000). It is proven that there is a relationship between hygiene and environmental sanitation with the incidence of stunting in children under five in the Dadok Tunggul Hitam Community Health Center in 2021.

Abstract

Cataract is an eye disease characterized by clouding of the lens. Cataracts that develop after the age of 60 are referred to as senile cataracts, a leading cause of blindness among the elderly, marked by progressive lens opacification. Hypertension is one of the risk factors, where cataracts may develop through mechanisms involving increased oxidative stress. This research to analyze the correlation between the duration of hypertension and the stage of senile cataracts. This study falls under ophthalmology and internal medicine. It used a quantitative analytical method with a cross-sectional design. Primary and secondary data were collected from senile cataract patients. A total of 35 patients were selected using purposive sampling, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Most patients were in the young elderly group (60–69 years; 71.4%), female (65.7%), and housewives (60%). The majority had hypertension for ≤5 years (62.9%) and were diagnosed with immature cataracts (71.4%). A Spearman correlation test showed a significant correlation (p = 0.01; r = +0.561) between the duration of hypertension and cataract stage. The longer the patient had hypertension, the more advanced the cataract stage. There is a significant correlation between the duration of hypertension and the stage of senile cataracts.

Abstract

Hemorrhoids are localized dilations of vascular structures caused by the migration or pathological hypertrophy of the pads in the submucosal layer of the lower rectum. In the United States, hemorrhoids are the fourth most common outpatient gastrointestinal diagnosis, accounting for 3.3 million outpatient visits annually. According to Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) data in 2018, approximately 12.5 million Indonesians suffer from hemorrhoidal disease. Factors commonly associated with an increased risk of hemorrhoids include constipation, a low-fiber diet, high body mass index (BMI), pregnancy, and a sedentary lifestyle. This study aims to determine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and the occurrence of hemorrhoids in the surgical department of RSI Siti Rahmah Padang during the period January 2022 to August 2023. This research employed an observational analytic method with a cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of patients from the surgical clinic of RSI Siti Rahmah Padang within the specified period who were diagnosed with hemorrhoids, selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were obtained from the medical records of 166 patients who met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using the chi-square test. The results showed that the highest incidence of hemorrhoids occurred in adults, with 23 cases (51.1%). Based on gender distribution, females accounted for 27 cases (60%). Regarding BMI, the majority of patients were classified as overweight, with 22 individuals (48.9%) suffering from hemorrhoids. Data analysis demonstrated a significant relationship between BMI and the incidence of hemorrhoids (p = 0.000).

Abstract

The use of gadgets in early childhood, including kindergarten children, has become a widespread phenomenon in today's digital era as a means of education and entertainment. The impact of gadget use on children's eye health raises serious concerns. In Indonesia, the number of eye health problems continues to increase by 1.5%, making it the highest in Asia. Refractive errors such as myopia usually begin to occur in children aged 6-11 years and tend to continue to progress. About 19% of children under the age of 15 are visually impaired. This activity was carried out by providing educational materials with audiovisual media, attended by kindergarten students with an age range of 4 years -6 years. 40% of men, 60% of women, and 100% of children play smartphone-type gadgets every day with a duration varying from 2-4 hours to play games, and watch videos. 66% of children know that playing with gadgets every day can cause problems with their health. 90% of the visibility to the gadget screen is <30cm and 6% of children use glasses. Education is expected to strengthen awareness of the importance of limiting the time of using gadgets and paying attention to environmental factors when using gadgets.
