Collection of information using food frequency questionnaires and mechanical measurements. Results show that p = 0.015 < p = 0.05, meaning a relationship exists between diet and nutritional status in preschool-aged children. Conclusion: Diet affects nutritional status in preschool-aged children. Dietary strategies applied to preschoolers should pay attention to their nutritional needs and environmental factors that affect their diet. This service activity aims to build the capacity of posyandu cadres to prevent and handle stunting. The results of service activities are an increasing understanding of toddler and pregnant women's nutrition seen from monitoring. The conclusion is that posyandu cadres can explain the importance of participating in posyandu activities every month, see the healthy development of toddlers and pregnant women using an interpersonal communication approach, and weigh and measure the baby's head circumference well. The filling of KMS has also been written correctly; this indicates an increase in the ability and skills of posyandu cadres.

Abstract

Introduction: Stunting is a global health problem that impacts children's growth and development. One of the main factors contributing to stunting is the lack of maternal knowledge about balanced nutrition. Nutrition education is expected to increase mothers' understanding of healthy eating and toddler stunting prevention practices. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of nutrition education on changes in maternal behavior in preventing stunting in toddlers. Materials and Methods: This study uses a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest approach with a control group. The sample consisted of mothers with toddlers, selected by purposive sampling. The intervention group was given nutrition education through counseling media and interactive discussions, while the control group did not receive the intervention. Results: The study showed a significant increase in mothers' knowledge and practice of nutrition after being given nutrition education (p<0.05). In addition, there were substantial differences between the intervention and control groups regarding stunting prevention behavior. Conclusions: Nutrition education has been proven effective in increasing maternal knowledge and behavior and preventing toddler stunting. Therefore, public health programs need to expand nutrition education interventions to reduce stunting incidence.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem still a public health challenge in Indonesia. One of the factors contributing to the high prevalence of stunting is the lack of knowledge of parents, especially mothers, about balanced nutritional intake and proper practices of feeding Complementary Breast Milk (MP-ASI). This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge and skills of mothers under five related to the importance of nutritious food and the practice of giving MP-ASI in accordance with the guidelines of WHO and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. The methods used are education through interactive counseling, demonstrations of making local food-based MP-ASI, and question and answer sessions. The target of the activity was 40 mothers with children aged 6-24 months in the Posyandu in the assisted area. The evaluation results showed an increase in participants' knowledge by 65% after participating in educational activities. In addition, 80% of participants stated that they were motivated to implement MP-ASI feeding practices that are in accordance with the principles of balanced nutrition. This activity also encourages the use of affordable and nutritious local food resources. With the increase in mothers' knowledge and skills in compiling and delivering MP-ASI, it is hoped that the risk of stunting in early childhood can be minimized. This service activity proves that education-based interventions and direct practices can effectively support programs to accelerate stunting reduction at the community level. The recommendation for the future is to expand the scope of similar activities with cross-sectoral collaboration, especially among health workers and posyandu cadres.
