Abstract

Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini diantaranya adalah sebagai berikut: 1) meningkatkan kemampuan menulis memo bahasa Inggris guru-guru melalui penerapan pendekatan berbasis genre; 2) meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman makna teks fungsional (memo) bahasa Inggris sesuai dengan konteks dan fungsi penggunaan sehari-hari; dan 3) memberikan pengalaman belajar yang baru kepada para guru yang dimana pada akhirnya dapat mentransfer pemahaman materi kepada siswa untuk meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris khususnya pembelajaran menulis (writing). Pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini mengadopsi kerangka pemikiran dari Cope and Kalantzis (1993), yang mengklasifikasikan tahapan penulisan melalui pendekatan berbasis genre (Genre Based Approach) ke dalam tiga langkah pelaksanaan kegiatan, khususnya pada pembelajaran menulis (writing) antara lain: 1) modeling, 2) joint construction, dan 3) independent construction. Abstract

This present community service activity aims at giving an understanding of the use of Mendeley application comprehensively in a research article for the lecturers of the Faculty of Language and Literature at Nasional University. The method of implementing this activity was divided into three steps in workshops model: (1) practical guidelines and tips on how to write at national accredited journals, (2) introducing Mendeley, and (3) practice of Mendeley. The result of the community service activity indicates that this activity help the lecturers in the citation writing process in case of in writing bibliography. Mendeley makes writing bibliography more effective and efficient. In understanding the citation process, verification will be more accurate and easier for other researchers to trace research. From these result, it can be concluded that this activity needs an intensive socializations on the use of Mendeley as an application of citations. The lecturers get the positive impact of this activity. The positive feedback of the lecturers was shown interactively during the implementation activities. It can be seen through their testimonials.

Abstract

Sometimes when someone who has made mistakes or says a statement which causes offence to others, she/he needs to maintain that kind of situation in response by apologies. The research aims at describing the strategies of apology in situational comedy. The data of this research were collected from dialogues that consist of apology in The Big Bang Theory. The data were analyzed qualitatively by examining the theory of apology strategy by Cohen and Olshtain (1986). Findings have shown that there are five strategies of apology utterances namely IFID, IFID + Explanation, IFID + Explanation + Requests, IFID + Responsibility + Requests and IFID + Explanation + IFID.

Abstract

The research aims at analyzing the socio-cultural semiotic that characterize the deixis in taglines. Such types of deixis are analyzed qualitatively by examining the socio-cultural functions using “Sign Mapping of Roland Barthes”. The analysis focuses in describing the signifier and signified as well as the meaning of denotative and connotative characterized the deixis in taglines of various advertisements. Findings have shown that the signifiers and signified concepts function to inform, to challenge, to emphasize, and to persuade, of the consumers as the addressee. The types of deixis occur into such types of pronominals deixis (she, you, I, me), nominal deixis (girl, age, the city), verbal (blow, drive, come, follow, let, change), adverbial (in her face, anywhere, Marlboro country, when you can fly), and grammatical deixis (imperative, statement, interrogative). The denotative meaning is reflected from the use of signifiers that serves the real of sense of the product referred to, i.e., the commercial product that is divided into categories, man’s category, woman’s category, and unmarked category. The connotative meaning relates to some cultural values, such as pleasure, masculinity, feminity, passion, luck, beauty, freedom, and the sense of belonging.Key words: Socio-cultural semiotic analysis, deixis, tagline

Abstract

This research investigated the slang created based on word formation processes as well as a its functions, and to describe the social factors influencing the existence of slang. The form of this research was qualitative method which resulted in descriptive data. The data were collected by using observations method (screenshot) on the meme or posts which follow certain postings of pictures. Then, it was followed by full observation method for there to be no interference from the researcher on the data collected. The data were taken from ‘trending’ and ‘legend’ posts in 1cak.com site. The focus of the research was on the analysis of slang by describing its word formation processes and functions. In this research, first, it is found that some of the types of slang words formation processes according to Yule are used in 1cak.com. They are clipping, blending, borrowing, acronyms, initials, and derivation by adding with specific affixes (suffix). Second, it is found that there are two additional functions of slang language to add to what Coleman has proposed; that there are 26 reasons why people use slang, such as mocking and praising. The social factors proposed by Johnstone & Marcellino in Speaking Hymes theory also influence the appearance and existence of slang. Social factors and situational factors that influence the use of language cause variations in language.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe the expressive speech acts of the YouTube user (netizen) and the politeness strategy used by the netizens in line to respond polling of Presidential-VP candidate in Indonesia. This descriptive qualitative research used library research in collecting the data. Some theories related to expressive speech acts and politeness strategy were used to analyze the data. The analysis was represented by using informal method. The result of analysis showed that the expressive speech act is the most frequently used by the YouTube users. The results indicated that the netizens used expressive speech acts to express anger, satirizing, sympathizing, blaming, thanking and fulminating. The research also revealed the importance of expressive speech act in keeping politeness in witten language. It was concluded that the netizens were creative in expressing their ideas through written language. Expressive speech acts and politeness strategy reflected the way the language users show their emotion by using words.

Abstract

This research aims at identifying register used in the commerce colloquial conversations among sellers and buyers. Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach is applied to examine the linguistic features viewed from the aspect of field, tenor and mode of discourse. Findings show that in the field of discourse, registers release the experiential domain of nouns, verbs, idiomatic expression, and word blending. The goal orientation appears to have both short and long term while the social activity results in exchanges among participants. Furthermore, in the field of tenor, participants have an equal agentive role as they have same social function. The social role is non-hierarchic and the social distance is minimal. Finally, in the mode of discourse, both constitutive and ancillary language role formed in present simple, past simple and future simple. The channel is phonic and the medium is spoken with visual contact as it is characterized by the use of back channel signs. The Systemic Functional Linguistics approach employed in this research could be used as the parameter for educators in teaching Sociolinguistics especially in conducting discourse analysis in various colloquial discourse contexts.

Abstract

The purpose of this research to discover non-observance of the maxim in Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The data is taken from Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie. In collecting the data,the writer uses non-participatory method. In analyzing data, the writer applies the pragmatic identity method. The main theory proposed by Grice as cited in Thomas (1995, p. 64) and supported by other theories related in analyzing the non-observance of the maxims, whether it is flouting a maxim, violating a maxim, infringing a maxim, opting out of a maxim, and suspending a maxim. In reporting the result of the analysis, the writer uses formal and informal method of presentation.The findings shows that non-observances of the maxim mostly happensbetween the characters that have close relation and according to goal and it is depend on the context of thesituation. Keywords: non-observance, maxim, flouting maxim and violating maxim

Abstract

The aim of this community service activity is to provide socialization of the use of the Canva application; to help the teachers in the 5.0 industrial revolution era, especially in the process of designing online teachingmaterials; to provide new teaching material design to give an experiences to teachers which in the end get convenience in online learning teaching materials. This activity uses the Canva application. The method usedintroducting, training/practice, mentoring and evaluating. By using the Canva application, the teaching material design process is considered to be more attractive and attractive to students and greatly facilitatesthe industrial era 5.0 teacher. From these results, it can be concluded that there is still a need for intensive socialization and training to teachers regarding the use of the Canva application as an effective and efficientevaluation application for teachers. The introduction of this application is expected not only to be introduced to teachers in SMPN 1 Bojongmangu, but also to other cross-school teachers. However, of course this requirescooperation from various parties to realize this activity. Therefore, collaboration with related parties is part of the next stage plan for the implementing team in order to introduce this Canva application in every school that needs it.

Abstract

Artificial intelligent-based application helps people in many ways, one of which telling them jokes. This study aims at (1) investigating the types of jokes on Google Assistant application, and (2) describing linguistic aspects used in the jokes. There were several steps in conducting this study. Firstly, the data of this study were the jokes taken from “tell me a joke” feature on Google Assistant. As many as 58 jokes were collected as the data. Then, the data were coded and analysed based on its linguistic aspects in terms of sounds, meanings, and word formations. After all data were analysed, conclusions were drawn. There are two forms of jokes in this application namely riddle and one liner. In riddle, the jokes are presented in question-answer form, whereas one liner joke only consists of one or two sentences. There are several linguistic aspects in creating the jokes, namely homonyms, minimal pair, substitution of sounds, onomatopoeia, phrase and words with similar pronunciation, idiomatic phrase, addition of sound and word combination. Among those aspects, homonyms are the most frequently utilized in the jokes. Jokes are beneficial for language learners to learn the real use of the language, thus further studies on jokes are suggested.
