Abstract

Gewang (Corypha utan Lamk) is a member of a palm tree that grows wild in most parts of Indonesia. The gewang plant is rich in starch which is thought to be used as an additional ingredient in making Paracetamol tablets with wet granulation methods. This study aims to determine the effect of starch supplementation on the physical properties of Paracetamol tablets. This research is a type of experimental research. Tablets are made in three formulas based on variations in the ratio of starch gewang intragranular and extragranular. Comparison of three formulas intragranular and extragranular, namely: FI (100%: 0%), FII (75%: 25%), FIII (0%: 100%). Tablets are made in wet granulation method with starch binder. Homogeneous dry granules then tested for physical properties of granules include: flow time, stationary angle, and tapping. Furthermore, pressing and tablets obtained were tested for the physical and chemical properties of tablets including weight uniformity and hardness. Statistical analysis of the physical quality of tablets was carried out by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov data normality test, followed by the dendan One Way Anova. The results showed that the use of starch gewang intragranular, extragranular and intragranular and extragranular combinations affected the physical properties of tablets. The method of adding extragranular starch starch to formula 3 produced tablets with effective tablet fragility, which was to meet the physical properties of tablets.

Abstract

Research has been conducted on the treatment of phlegm cough with miana leaf extract in vitro (effective dose of miana leaf extract as an expectorant and antibacterial agent causing cough with phlegm). The study aims to compare the antioxidant activity of miana leaves from 3 locations where it grows, determine the types of contaminant bacteria in the sputum of cough sufferers, determine the minimum value of inhibitor concentration (MIC) and MKC of miana leaves against the test bacteria causing cough with phlegm, determine the effective dose of miana leaves that can used as a reference for coughing up phlegm and proving the potential of miana leaves as a sputum thinner. Miana leaf extraction is done by the juicer method. Antioxidant activity testing uses the DPPH method. Determination of test bacteria is done by isolating and identifying contaminant bacteria in the sputum sample of cough with phlegm. Testing the effectiveness of miana leaves against test bacteria is determined by the liquid dilution method. Expectorant activity testing was determined by measuring the viscosity of mucus viscosity of cow intestine treated with miana leaf extract. The results found that antioxidant activity was influenced by the location where miana leaves grew with an antioxidant potential of IC72 0.072 mg/ml - 0.76 mg/ml. Contaminant bacteria from sputum samples of cough patients are Streptococcus pneumonia, Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Enterobacter agglomerans. MIC values for contaminant bacteria are 0.1% - 0.75% and MKC values are found between 0.25% - 1.75%. miana leaf extract has the potential as a sputum thinner at a concentration of 0.01% - 0.1%. The recommended dose of miana leaf extract as a cough with phlegm is 1.75% w/v.

Abstract

Propolis contains arginine (amino acids), ferulic acid (a derivative compound cinnamic which promotes the formation of collagen), flavonoids (phenolic compounds), and other compounds that can prevent the growth of bacteria, virus, and fungi. The purpose of this study was to measure the most concentration of propolis extracts that effective to heal burns of New Zealand rabbit's.  This was an experimental study with the post-test only control group design. As many as 15 male white rabbits were divided into 5 groups which treated by  propolis extract  with concentration of 50%, 75%, 100%, positive control by bioplacenton and negative control with propylene glycol. The macroscopic observation was done with detached necrosis tissue and the growth of collagen tissue as the parameter. Data were analyzed by using the one-way ANOVA and continued by the SNK test. The results of this study indicated that the propolis extracted have potency on healing burn wound with the significance of 0.00 (p≤0,05). In the concentration of 100%, extract of propolis has  potency on healing burn wound that proportionates with bioplacenton with the significance value of 1.000 (p≥0,05). It is concluded that by increasing dose, the healing time of burn wound will be shortened. Keywords : Propolis, healing burns, rabbit

Abstract

Damage to liver function is the most common cause of patients or doctors stopping treatment. Anti tuberculosis (OAT) drug-induced hepatotoxicity is mainly caused by oxidative stress caused by drugs and metabolites. Subchronic toxicity is one of the conditions for testing long-term used drugs such as OAT. The research aims to determine the potential of miana leaf extract (EDM) as a hepatoprotector and prevent toxicity due to OAT administration. The study used 5 groups of Wistar rat test animals namely K1 (normal mice given placebo); K2 (OAT-induced mice given placebo); K3 (OAT-induced mice given Makassar EDM); K4 (OAT-induced mice given EDM Kupang); K5 (OAT-induced mice given Silymarin). Tests on mice were carried out after 30 days of treatment with parameters SGOT, SGPT, total bilirubin, creatinine and liver histopathology. The results showed that EDM has the potential as a hepatoprotector by preventing an increase in SGOT, SGPT and total bilirubin so as to avoid liver damage due to OAT induction. EDM has the potential to prevent toxicity due to the administration of OAT with creatinine parameters.

Abstract

The current development of antimalarial drug resistance encourages researchers to discover and develop novel antimalarials. One of its alternatives for antimalarial discovery is using medicinal plants remembering the success of artemisinin. Sterculia quardrifida R. Br. bark, locally name as faloak, is an endemic medicinal plant from East Nusa Tenggara that has been used traditionally to treat malaria. However, its antimalarial activity has not been investigated, yet. This study was aimed to evaluate the antiplasmodial activity of ethanolic extract of faloak bark against Plasmodium falciparum in vitro. Using FCR-3 P. falciparum strain, the ethanolic extract was evaluated on various concentration (1, 10, 50, and 100 μg/mL, respectively). The IC50 value was determined by the relationship between concentration and percentage of growth inhibition. The result showed that the percentage of inhibition of P. falciparum was concentration dependent, higher concentration resulting on higher percentage of inhibition with the IC50 42.399 ± 9.517 μg/mL. It can be concluded that the ethanolic extract of faloak bark have moderate antiplasmodial activity against P. falciparum in vitro.
