Abstract

The contestation of America’s presidency in 2020 showed a very competitive and strict run. Both candidates provided arguments and attacked each other in public discussion rooms. However, it is a typical of a normal election where there will be always campaigns from the candidates to persuade and to gain public’s votes as much as possible. Therefore, the 2020 presidential election of America feels unusual compared to the previous. Besides it was conducted within the pandemic outbreak, the high tension of global conflict issues and internal social-economic problems of America caused the contestation becoming hotter and noteworthy. Regardless of its final result, it is really interesting to discuss the discourses appeared in the public room regarding the issue. New York Times, one of the leading media in USA provides the room for publics to participate in writing their opinion. This study tried to analyse a writing written in opinion column entitled “Is America Becoming a Failed State?” using appraisal system. The discourse was analysed in the three aspects of White’s appraisal framework namely attitude, graduation, and engagement. Under the scope of critical discourse analysis, this study aimed to elucidate the appraisal aspects found in the text regarding public’s opinion and its standing points to the issue. This study is a descriptive qualitative and the data were collected from an article in New York Times. The discussion was also connected to some external factors besides the three aspects mentioned such as political, economic, and socio-cultural factors.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the growing popularity of Instagram influencers (selebgram) in Indonesia, including in Lombok, who have now become role models and promotional media for various business sectors. The aim of this study is to analyze illocutionary speech acts, gender dominance, and the interests of the Lombok community as reflected in their engagement with selebgram content. Data were collected through observation and documentation, then analyzed using content analysis methods. The study reveals three main findings. First, selebgram in Lombok are predominantly female, with popular content focusing on fesyen, culinary arts, tourism, and entertainment. Second, female selebgram tend to use more commissive and expressive speech acts, while male selebgram are more inclined to use assertive and expressive forms. Third, Instagram audiences in Lombok show greater interest in following female selebgram and favor entertainment-related content. This study indicates that the popularity of selebgram in Lombok shapes communication patterns that reflect gender differences and, pragmatically, influence audience interests in the digital sphere. These findings highlight the importance of linguistic studies in understanding the role of selebgram as representations of popular culture and constructions of gender identity on social media.

Abstract

Public speaking is one of the most important skills for students. Public communication skills not only play a role in supporting academic success, but also provide great benefits in professional and social life. In fact, it turns out that many students still experience obstacles when they have to speak in front of many people, including in academic presentations. Based on these facts, this study attempts to classify the obstacles to public communication of students so that recommendations can be provided to overcome these obstacles to public communication in the campus environment. Data were collected using observation and interview methods. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using the content analysis method and presented informally. The findings of this study are several obstacles to public communication, namely linguistic, psychological, technical, environmental, body movement, mastery of material, and visual aids. From these findings, it is concluded that the obstacles to public communication in students' academic presentations mostly come from internal factors (linguistic, psychological, body movement, and mastery of material) and external factors (technical, visual aids, and environmental). Students who are less accustomed to public speaking tend to have difficulty organizing material and delivering it well. In addition, the lack of training in the use of presentation aids worsens the situation

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a novel and practical syllabus for the Integrated Course subject designed explicitly for English Education Department students at IAIN Ponorogo. Using Borg and Gall's Research and Development (R&D) model, the research followed a systematic approach that included needs analysis, planning, prototype development, expert validation, product trials, and finalization. A key innovation in this syllabus is its integration of three distinct syllabus types: competency-based, content-based, and task-based. The syllabus includes 14 carefully sequenced topics, progressing from the simplest to the most complex, covering essential Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing areas. Offered as an 8-credit course with four meeting hours per week, it incorporates active and cooperative learning methods, emphasizing student-centered instruction. Another novel feature is the use of varied instructional media—audio, visual, and audio-visual materials—that connect students' prior experiences with the course content, making learning more dynamic and relatable. Assessment in the syllabus is comprehensive, combining both product and process evaluations to provide a well-rounded measurement of student progress. Expert validation and field testing confirmed that the final product is practical and highly applicable for the first-semester English Education students at IAIN Ponorogo, offering a tailored and impactful learning experience.
