Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze differences in the critical thinking skills of vocational high school (SMK) students who study using problem-based learning (PBL)-based modules and school textbooks and vocational students who study using conventional methods assisted by school textbooks. This research is a quasi-experiment research. The research subjects were 76 students at one of the Vocational Schools in Mataram City. The instruments used were tests of critical thinking skills and interview guidelines. The critical thinking ability indicators used combine the critical thinking ability indicators from Ennis and Facione, namely explaining the answer with appropriate reason, justify the quality of argument, justify the relevancy of data and asking appropriate question. The data from the critical thinking skills test were tested using the T-test and the Mann Whitney U-test. The results of this study are 1) there are differences in critical thinking skills between vocational students who study using PBL-based modules and school textbooks and vocational students who learn using conventional methods assisted by school textbooks, 2) there are differences in critical thinking abilities in explaining the answer with appropriate reason and asking appropriate question between SMK students who study using PBL-based modules and school textbooks and SMK students who study using conventional methods assisted by school textbooks.

Abstract

Elementary school students possess diverse talents and interests, one of which includes an aptitude and enthusiasm for mathematics. These students require appropriate activity to nurture and develop their potential. Mathematics competitions serve as an effective platform to channel students' interest in the subject. This community service program was conducted with the objective of providing academic support to students at SDN 7 Mataram in preparing for mathematics competitions. The program was implemented from February to March 2025, comprising a total of 16 sessions. The method of implementation involved intensive mentoring through the administration of non-routine Olympiad-level mathematical problems. The outcomes of the program indicate that students became increasingly adept at tackling non-routine problems. This was evidenced by a marked improvement in their performance over the evaluation test on the mentoring sessions. It is anticipated that this initiative will contribute positively to the development of students’ mathematical interests and also their readiness in competing in mathematics competition.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the readiness of novice mathematics teachers in Mataram City to teach critical and creative thinking skills to junior high school students. A descriptive method was employed with a purposive sample of 23 novice teachers. The research instrument consisted of tests measuring teachers' understanding of critical and creative thinking concepts and their ability to formulate questions that foster these skills. The results indicate that most novice teachers have good readiness, with an average score of 77.23. However, readiness varies by teaching experience, where teachers with 0–1 year and over 5 years of experience show higher readiness than those with 1–3 and 3–5 years of experience. These findings highlight the necessity of continuous training and mentoring to sustain and improve novice teachers’ competence in teaching 21st-century skills. The study recommends the development of focused professional development programs aimed at enhancing teachers’ abilities to teach critical and creative thinking.
