Abstract

The oral health promotion program is an effective way to enhance the community's ability to maintain their dental and oral health, provide access to information about dental and oral health, and guide the community toward adopting proper and correct behaviors regarding dental and oral health. The educational and training activities aim to increase the community’s knowledge about oral cavity disorders and their prevention. There were 82 participants from the Paguyuban Umat Senior Wihara Ekaya Arama (PUSA) community who took part in this activity. The training and education were conducted using PowerPoint presentations, videos, and posters as teaching tools. Based on the pre-test and post-test results, there was a noticeable increase in post-test scores, indicating an improvement in participants' knowledge after receiving education and training on oral cavity disorders and their prevention. The conclusion from the education and training activities provided to the PUSA community is that there was an increase in participants' knowledge. It is hoped that these educational and training activities will continue to benefit the community and enhance their ability to maintain dental and oral health.

Abstract

Background: Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS) and oroantral communication (OAC) have been well recognized in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The treatment ranges from non-surgical treatment to surgical treatment. Purpose: This case report discusses the management of OMS and OAC through a non-surgical approach. Case: A female patient presented to our department after being referred from a different department. After informed consent was obtained, her tooth was extracted. Unfortunately, the maxillary sinus was exposed, and OMS was suspected after pus leakage occurred into the oral cavity prior to tooth extraction. The communication was found at the mesiobuccal region with a 3 mm diameter and distobuccal region with a 2 mm diameter. Case management: Due to the small size of the OAC, it was decided to close the communication using the figure-of-eight suture technique, and an absorbable gelatin sponge was placed inside the socket. Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis was treated with a combination of pharmacological therapy and dental therapy, including the removal of the source of infection and a prescription of antibiotics and nasal decongestant due to the OAC. Finally, the patient was educated about the sinus precaution step. Conclusion: Good healing of the lesion was noted in this report. Non-surgical treatment such as dental therapy and pharmacological therapy can, therefore, be considered to treat OMS. Closure of the OAC using a suture technique and a gelatin sponge can treat small-sized communication.

Abstract

Dental caries is a significant health issue in Indonesia, particularly among preschool children, due to a lack of knowledge and habits in maintaining dental hygiene. Schools serve as strategic venues to promote dental health through activities such as tooth-brushing programs. Teachers play a crucial role in setting examples and guiding children in practicing routine oral hygiene. A health education program at Santa Maria Juanda Kindergarten aims to enhance awareness and understanding of oral health among teachers and students. Based on the pretest and posttest results, this results demonstrate an increase in knowledge by 12.69%, and participants are expected to be able to use the knowledge they have acquired in their everyday lives.

Abstract

Maintaining the original root canal anatomy during shaping is crucial to prevent procedural errors, such as canal transportation and ledge formation. The development of heat-treated blue NiTi instruments can improve flexibility, resistance to cyclic fatigue, and the ability to maintain root canal curvature. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of glide path (GP) on canal centering and canal transportation using a single-file system of blue NiTi with a conventional S-shaped cross-section design (AF S) and a flat design (AF F). Forty J-shaped canal simulation resin blocks were randomly divided into four groups: AF F+GP, AF F, AF S+GP, and AF S (n = 10 each group). In the group using the glide path (AF F+GP and AF S+GP), ProGlider #16.02 was used before instrumentation. Pre- and post-instrumentation images were analyzed using Adobe Photoshop CS6 software to measure canal centering and transportation at the apical, middle, and coronal thirds. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test (p<0.05). Significant differences were found in canal centering and canal transportation in the apical and middle thirds (p<0.05), while no significant differences were found in the coronal third (p>0.05). The use of a glide path significantly improved centering ability and reduced transportation. Furthermore, the flat design of the Blue NiTi single-file system demonstrated better centering ability and reduced canal transportation than conventional S-shaped systems. All systems could shape curved simulated root canals without iatrogenic error.
