Abstract

Objective: To determine the accuracy of diagnosing oral lesions through clinical photos taken by clinical dental students (CDS). Methods: The observational analytic study was conducted on 100 CDS to evaluate 140 clinical photos of oral lesions. The gold standard was evaluated by three oral medicine specialists. Data analysis will be performed using accuracy and kappa tests. Results: The accuracy rate of lesion detection in CDS is high (88.55%) with substantial agreement (κ = 0.66). However, the accuracy rate of diagnosis is low (38.21%) with no agreement (κ = -0.30). Participation in the clinical Oral Medicine module positively influenced detection accuracy, with the highest rate among students who had completed the module (96.18%). However, diagnostic accuracy remained low across all groups. Conclusion: CDS demonstrates good detection abilities but struggles with accurate diagnosis. Participation in the clinical Oral Medicine module is beneficial for improving detection abilities. Further efforts are needed to enhance diagnostic skills and ensure that CDS are well-prepared for clinical practice.

Abstract

Dental caries is a significant health issue in Indonesia, particularly among preschool children, due to a lack of knowledge and habits in maintaining dental hygiene. Schools serve as strategic venues to promote dental health through activities such as tooth-brushing programs. Teachers play a crucial role in setting examples and guiding children in practicing routine oral hygiene. A health education program at Santa Maria Juanda Kindergarten aims to enhance awareness and understanding of oral health among teachers and students. Based on the pretest and posttest results, this results demonstrate an increase in knowledge by 12.69%, and participants are expected to be able to use the knowledge they have acquired in their everyday lives.

Abstract

Objectives: The growing popularity of vaping has introduced additional challenges, as potential health risks are still under investigation. Exploring differences in smoking perceptions between smokers and non-smokers could provide valuable insights into smoking behavior and inform effective intervention strategies. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the perceptions of smoking, specifically vaping and conventional cigarette use, among young adult smokers and non-smokers. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional design was employed, with 542 university students included through random sampling, using a questionnaire consisting of 8 items. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Rasch model analysis. Results: Of the subjects, 259 (48%) used vapes and 283 (52%) were non-smokers. The age distribution was as follows: under 19 years (13.51% vs 38.87%), 19-20 years (46.33% vs 32.16%), and over 21 years (40.15% vs 28.98%). The Wright map indicated perceptual differences between smokers and non-smokers, with smokers showing greater agreement with smoking perceptions (>1 logit). Significant differences (p < 0.001) were found in each item across all groups. Conclusion: The study identified distinct perceptual differences regarding smoking between smokers and non-smokers, with smokers having a more favorable perception towards smoking. Non-smokers generally showed a stronger aversion to conventional cigarettes compared to electronic ones. These findings underscore the importance of developing targeted smoking cessation programs that address the specific perceptions and attitudes of both groups.
