Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out how the intercultural communication competence possessed by the students of Sultan Iskandar Muda High School Medan. Through qualitative approach by applying case study method, the problem in this research will be answered by using an intercultural communication competence model developed by Chen and Starosta which consists of three components: affective, cognitive, and behavioral. The results of the study shows that the research subjects in general have had intercultural communication competence especially on elements: cultural knowledge, self-concept, open-mindedness, nonjudgmental, social relaxation, interaction management, and social skills.Keywords: intercultural communication competence, students, Sultan Iskandar Muda High School

Abstract

Beberapa jenis konten prank yang diajukan dalam penelitian ini adalah prank gembel/ pengemis, prank ojol, prank tes kejujuran, prank giveaway, prank di tempat umum/wisata, prank teman/keluarga, prank gold digger, prank melibatkan polisi, prank bom, dan prank horor. Penelitian ini dilakukan bertujuan  memperoleh gambaran tentang persepsi remaja mengenai konten prank di media sosial. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif. Responden penelitian adalah para pelajar Sekolah Menengah Atas di Kota Medan yang berjumlah 200 orang. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan kuesioner yang disebarkan melalui aplikasi Google Form. Hasil penelitian yang diperoleh antara lain konten prank yang paling disukai adalah prank tes kejujuran, prank giveaway, prank gembel/pengemis, serta prank teman/keluarga. Jenis-jenis konten prank yang tidak disukai adalah prank bom, prank yang melibatkan polisi, prank ojek online, dan prank gold digger. Persepsi terhadap nilai-nilai positif yang terdapat dalam konten prank menurut responden adalah kedermawanan, kesetiakawanan, serta pantang menyerah, sementara persepsi mengenai nilai negatif antara lain merugikan orang lain, memberi contoh buruk, dan dapat menimbulkan kemarahan. Kesimpulan yang diperoleh bahwa Konten prank dikemas sedemikian rupa untuk memberikan hiburan bagi para penontonnya, diperlukan kebijaksanaan dan kecerdasan semua pihak dalam mengakses dan memproduksi konten yang dapat memberikan manfaat sebesar-besarnya bagi khalayak dan masyarakat.

Abstract

Children nowdays have easely access to information technology, especially smartphones, tablets and personal computers. Therefore, parents take an important role in monitoring their children’s digital media use. The problem that will be explored in depth is how parents supervise the use of children's digital media. This study used a survey method, using a questionnaire as a means of capturing data. The number of respondents is 150 people who have the characteristics of the elderly (father or mother) who have school children at the kindergarten, elementary, junior high, high school and university levels, and use digital media. Respondents were scattered in several sub-districts, namely Medan Johor, Medan Amplas, Medan Selayang, Medan Denai, Medan Polonia and Medan Deli. The results showed that most of the parents perform passive supervision, namely limiting the time the child uses the media and monitoring what sites the child visits. A small proportion of them conduct active supervision such as teaching and directing children to use digital media, especially the internet, and using the internet together with children. The parental supervision model of the effective use of children's digital media is an active supervision model, where parents are actively involved in supervising, not just supervising it.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui jenis kekerasan berbasis gender online (KBGO) serta respons pengguna media sosial di Kota Medan terhadap perilaku kekerasan yang mereka terima. Populasi dalam penelitian adalah warga Kota Medan berusia 15 – 64 tahun. Sampel dihitung menggunakan rumus Slovin dengan presisi 7% sehingga diperoleh sampel berjumlah 200 orang. Sampel penelitian dipilih secara purposif yaitu mereka yang pernah mengalami kekerasan online. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menyebarkan kuesioner melalui aplikasi Google Form pada bulan Juli 2021. Penelitian menerapkan teknik analisis data deskriptif. Jenis KBGO yang paling banyak diterima oleh responden adalah cyberstalking yaitu pelaku mengawasi atau menguntit kegiatan responden melalui media sosial, komentar kasar di media sosial, serta impersonasi yaitu pelaku menyamar dengan nama atau identitas orang lain yang aktif secara online untuk tujuan menyakiti, mengintimidasi, menipu, atau mengancam responden. Sikap terbanyak responden terhadap perilaku kekerasan online tersebut adalah memblokir akun pelaku, dan mendiamkan saja. Responden paling sering mendapatkan kekerasan online melalui Platform Instagram, Facebook, dan WhatsApp.

Abstract

Violence on social media comes in various forms, one of which is verbal, such as rude or hateful comments, threats, or insults. This research will provide an overview of the responses of social media users to the verbal violence they experience in cyberspace. Researchers conducted interviews with five informants aged 19 – 21 years who had experienced violence on social media. Apart from that, researchers also completed the data by conducting interviews with expert informants in media literacy. The research results showed that all informants received indirect types of verbal violence through their social media in the form of teasing and body shaming, both from friends and strangers. Specifically, some informants experienced direct and indirect verbal violence, as well as repressive violence. The responses of the informants in responding to verbal violence were at the attitude and behavior level, including remaining silent because they felt like they were in the minority and did not need to reply, hiding their stories or status on social media from the perpetrator, and even contacting the perpetrator to get an explanation. Expert informants assess that violent behavior that appears in the media is caused, among other things, by the various backgrounds of media users, both in terms of economic education and literacy levels. Many responses or ways can be made in responding to online violence, but according to expert informants, the ideal way is to provide an answer or warning politely. It also aims to educate fellow media users.

Abstract

Public speaking competence is needed in various interactions between people, both in personal and social contexts, including leadership, business, religion, law, education, and others. In the field of education, for example, the need for public speaking skills especially for students is very necessary. The ability to speak in public is very helpful in increasing students' self-confidence which can support their performance both in education and social life. This ability is not only to encourage students to excel in the academic field within their school, but also to excel in other fields outside of school. As an implementation in helping to improve students' public speaking skills, the FISIP USU service team has carried out public speaking training service activities in one of the schools in Medan City, namely SMA Al Washliyah 1 in September 2023. The service team provided provision for students to be more capable of communicating in front of the public. Participants received public speaking materials and some of them practiced public speaking directly in a competition. This service activity is a form of contribution to the implementation of the fourth point of Sustainable Development Goals, namely Quality Education.

Abstract

Perkembangan teknologi digital telah meningkatkan konsumsi media pada anak-anak, termasuk screen time yang berlebihan. Penggunaan media digital tanpa pengawasan dapat berdampak negatif pada perkembangan anak, seperti hiperaktivitas, kurangnya keterampilan sosial, dan kecenderungan menjadi lebih individualis. Fenomena menunjukkan masih banyak orang tua yang belum memiliki pemahaman cukup mengenai dampak negatif dari media khususnya media digital. Orang tua belum memiliki keterampilan dalam mengelola screen time dengan bijak. Tim pengabdian FISIP USU telah menyelenggarakan Workshop "Bijak Mengelola Screen Time pada Anak Usia Dini" di TK Nurul Huda. Workshop ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kesadaran dan keterampilan orang tua dalam membimbing serta membatasi penggunaan media digital oleh anak-anak. Kegiatan akan mencakup penyuluhan mengenai baik buruknya media, screen time, serta peran orang tua dalam membatasi screen time pada anak. Program ini diharapkan membantu menciptakan lingkungan yang kondusif bagi perkembangan anak. Pengabdian ini juga diharapkan dapat meningkatkan pemahaman orang tua serta perubahan pola pengawasan dan pendampingan mereka terhadap screen time anak. Diharapkan program ini dapat membantu menciptakan lingkungan yang lebih kondusif bagi perkembangan anak dan memberikan kontribusi dalam mendukung SDGs 4 (Pendidikan Berkualitas).

Abstract

Fenomena tunawisma di wilayah perkotaan terus menjadi isu sosial yang kompleks dan belum tertangani secara efektif melalui pendekatan konvensional. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi strategi inklusi sosial sebagai upaya transformasi sosial yang mampu mendorong tunawisma menuju kehidupan mandiri. Rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini mencakup: faktor-faktor penyebab seseorang menjadi tunawisma, pendekatan konvensional dalam penanganannya, serta bagaimana strategi inklusi sosial dapat diusulkan sebagai alternatif yang berkelanjutan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan desain studi kasus komparatif di dua lokasi: Kota Medan (Indonesia) serta Pulau Pinang (Malaysia). Data diperoleh dari wawancara mendalam, diskusi kelompok terfokus (FGD), dan analisis dokumen hukum serta kebijakan terkait. Hasil penelitiannya yakni penyebab utama tunawisma meliputi masalah keluarga, kemiskinan, kehilangan pekerjaan, dan keterbatasan akses terhadap perlindungan sosial. Di Medan, pendekatan yang digunakan bersifat represif dan berorientasi pada penertiban, sementara di Pulau Pinang bersifat karitatif namun temporer. Keduanya belum menyentuh aspek pemberdayaan dan reintegrasi sosial secara menyeluruh. Strategi inklusi sosial yang diusulkan mencakup kolaborasi lintas sektor, pelatihan kerja berbasis kebutuhan, pemulihan relasi sosial, serta penyediaan akses terhadap layanan dasar. Temuan ini memperkuat pentingnya pergeseran paradigma dari pendekatan kontrol dan bantuan darurat ke arah pemberdayaan dan keadilan sosial yang berkelanjutan.
