Abstract

Introduction: The Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) is a ligament located inside the knee joint that connects the femur to the tibia on the inner or medial side. The MCL's major role is to keep the knee joint stable and to avoid excessive sideways or valgus movements. Injury to the MCL might caused by valgus forces and sudden rotational extension of the knee, which frequently occurs during athletic activities causing the knee to be in a rotational position when the force is applied. As a result, the MCL is sprained or overstretched. If the force applied to the knee is greater, the ligament will rupture. Case Report: The patient is a 30-year-old male who has a ruptured right MCL. He had intraoperative surgery 1 day after his injury for reconstruction. After two weeks, the patient returned to the physiotherapy clinic, where he had difficulties bending and straightening his knee, the quadriceps’ muscle strength appeared to decrease, and he had difficulty in walking. Rehabilitation had been done twice a week and included activities to facilitate the improvement of joint range of motion and muscle strength. Conclusion: The present case concluded that the training program provided can enhance knee joint range of motion following MCL surgery. The findings of this case pointed to the necessity for bigger patient groups to be studied with long-term examination of the safety and efficacy for the MCL’s exercise program.

Abstract

Kelurahan Kroyo, located in Karangmalang District, Sragen Regency, has strategic road access and the majority of its population works in the private sector, agriculture, and as brick craftsmen. However, the physical conditions often leading to heavy physical activity have made health issues, especially low back pain (LBP), a major health concern. LBP, a common problem among the elderly, is often triggered by factors such as aging, poor work habits, and a lack of physical activity. This can decrease the quality of life and productivity within the community. The purpose of this community service program is to provide preventive education and management of LBP through health counseling and physiotherapy interventions to the community of Kelurahan Kroyo, particularly members of the Persatuan Wredatama Republik Indonesia (PWRI). The participant in this activity is the PWRI Branch of Karangmalang, which has 26 elderly members. The implementation method of this program was carried out in three stages: preparation (coordination with the village administration and the village midwife), execution (health counseling and interactive discussions), and evaluation (post-test to assess participants' understanding). The results of the activity show an increase in participants' knowledge about the prevention and management of LBP, with the pre-test average score being 36.7% and the post-test increasing to 63.3%. This activity not only enhanced health awareness but also provided practical skills that can be applied in daily life, such as stretching exercises and proper posture. Through this community service, it is hoped that PWRI members will be able to reduce LBP complaints and lead a healthier and more productive life.

Abstract

Introduction: The developmental process of the fetus disrupts the daily activities of pregnant women, leading to musculoskeletal system disorders, mainly back pain. Fetal development causes postural changes and a shift in the body's centre of gravity to the anterior of the pregnant woman, resulting in paraspinal muscle tension and abdominal muscle weakness. Ignoring back discomfort during pregnancy can negatively affect a woman's overall health and happiness. Lumbar Stabilization Exercises are physical activities that aim to enhance neuromuscular function, strengthen the lower back, and improve flexibility, all of which contribute to maintaining spinal stability. This study aims to determine the effect of lumbar stabilisation exercise on the quality of life of pregnant women experiencing discomfort from back pain. Methods: The subjects of this study are pregnant women located at the Puskesmas Kartasura worksite who experience complaints of back pain. We assigned 11 respondents to the treatment group who underwent the exercise therapy known as LSE. We assigned another 11 respondents to the control group, who attended prenatal classes either in the village or at the clinic. We used the WHOQOOL Bref-Ina as the quality-of-life questionnaire. The data analysis involved using univariate analysis, normality tests, homogeneity tests, influence tests, and difference tests. Results: This study found that Lumbar Stabilization Exercise (LSE) affects the quality of life of pregnant women who report back pain (p = 0.000); however, there is no statistically significant difference (p = 0.902) between the treatment group and the control group. Conclusion: Lumbar Stabilization Exercises (LSE) effectively improve the quality of life for pregnant women experiencing back pain, as evidenced by significant improvements in physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains.

Abstract

Abstract

Intercondylar fractures of the femur are complex intra-articular injuries involving the medial and lateral condyles at the distal end of the femur bone, just above the knee joint. These injuries are commonly caused by high-energy trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents or falls from significant heights. This study presents a case report of a 23-year-old unemployed female patient. The assessment tools used included the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) for evaluating pain intensity, a goniometer for measuring the range of motion (ROM), Manual Muscle Testing (MMT) for assessing muscle strength, and the Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale for evaluating functional activity. After three physiotherapy sessions conducted over three weeks, the patient demonstrated a reduction in pain, an improvement in muscle strength, an increased joint range of motion, and enhanced functional activity. A rehabilitation program consisting of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), forced knee flexion with a quadriceps board, active knee flexion and extension exercises with a gym ball, stretching exercises, and active functional training was found to be effective in improving the patient's post-operative outcomes following malunion intercondylar femur fracture (right) post-ORIF.

Abstract

Background: Maintaining internal body temperature is critical for the runner’s performance. The inability to reduce the rising temperature may result in hyperthermia and muscle fatigue. Pre-cooling may lower core temperature, allowing for greater heat storage during exercise and delaying thermally-induced fatigue, as well as increased motor output through decrease electrical activity by cooling the muscles. Furthermore, there have been lack studies that compare electrical activity in muscle between gender differences in response to prolonged exercise after pre-cooling. Objective: The purpose of this study to investigate the changes in electrical activity pre and post cold water immersion (CWI) in male and female recreational runners. Methods: This case involved 2 males and 2 females aged 20 years old who are physically active runner with normal-weight BMI. The outcome was measured using electromyography (EMG) which was carried out every 4 minutes while 1st and 2nd running sessions (16 minutes). Results: Male subjects' electrical activity (mV) decreased significantly between 8 to 16 minutes and 16 to 8 minutes (p=0.04, p<0.05). But not in female subjects (p>0.05). Conclusion: It can be concluded that CWI as pre-cooling had an effect of lowering the electrical activity level in the muscle during running in both genders.
