Abstract

Water quality in the form of turbidity, colour, odour, taste and suspended residue are significant issues in Sungsang Banyuasin. The filter utilizes a filtration method to remove solid particles and contaminants. The research site consists of Sungsang, Sungsang II, and Sungsang III areas. The purpose of this study was to determine the water quality in the form of colour, taste, odour, turbidity, suspended residue, and salinity, as well as the ability of the filter to overcome water quality. Filtration consists of sedimentation, filter membranes, and filter media consisting of zeolite, silica, anthracite, ferrolite, activated carbon, and bioring. Water quality measurements used organoleptic to determine odour and taste, handrefractometer to measure salinity, direct reading to measure suspended residue, and spectrophotometry to measure colour and turbidity. The breech water was odourless and tasteless, and the suspended residue value ranged from 17-19 mg/L below the quality standard of 50 mg/L. Colour and turbidity values are greater than 50 on their respective scales and salinity values range from 11-13 ppt. The filtration process successfully reduced the values of suspended residue, colour, turbidity, and salinity.

Abstract

Fish and some groups of shrimps and crabs are one of the economically important biota that live in the waters. Accumulation of heavy metals in fish can affect the economic value of marine fishery products. There are several types of fish that contain heavy metals and are harmful when consumed by humans. The purpose of this study was to determine the dominant bycatch fish species and the accumulation of heavy metals Pb and Cu in the bycatch of stationary lift net Pesisir Banyuasin. This study was conducted in November 2019 and the dominant bycatch included japuh fish (Dussumieria acuta), tembang fish (Sardinella fimbriata) and parang-parang fish (Chirocentrus dorab). Samples were taken from one stationary lift net then analysed using SSA (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry) with 3 repetitions. The results of the analysis found the average concentration of heavy metals Pb and Cu in japuh fish was 0.65 mg/kg Pb; 0.16 mg/kg Cu. In tembang fish 0.70 mg/kg Pb and 0.03 mg/kg Cu. The parang-parang fish was 0.50 mg/kg and 0.17 mg/kg Cu. Based on the quality standards of SNI, Directorate General of Food and Drug Administration and FAO, the Pb and Cu concentrations of the three types of by-catch fish are still below the quality standard threshold and safe for human consumption.

Abstract

Abstract

Understanding the diversity, function, and ecological dynamics of bacterial communities depends on unique transitional environments, estuaries. Knowledge on bacterial taxa in the Musi River estuary, South Sumatra still eludes, however. This effort aims to identify bacterial species in estuary waters using metagenomic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene. Surface water samples from three study locations were analysed by DNA isolation, nanodrop spectrophotometer qualitative assessment, 16S rRNA gene amplification, electrophoresis, and Illumina NovaSeq sequencing. Results showed that Proteobacteria predominated at all sites, followed by Campilobacterota, Cyanobacteria, and Bacteroidota. At the class level, Gammaproteobacteria was most common, followed by Alphaproteobacteria and Campylobacteria. Dominant bacterial orders were Campylobacterales, Rhodobacterales, and Pseudomonadales while the most common families were Arcobacteraceae, Rhodobacteraceae, and Pseudomonadaceae. The most plentiful genera were Rheinheimera, Pseudomonas, and Pseudarcobacter. Variations in bacterial spread among stations suggest environmental factors including salinity, nutrient availability, and human activities influencing microbial community composition. Ternary plots, heat maps, and krona diagrams were employed to disclose distinct patterns of bacterial community dispersion in the estuary. This paper underscores the importance of metagenomic research in illuminating microbial diversity in estuarine environments and its impact on ecological dynamics and water quality.
