Abstract

Changes in the growth phase of oil palm can potentially affect the population dynamics of rhinoceros beetles (Oryctes rhinoceros L.) and horned beetles (Xylotrupes gideon L.), two major pest species that can reduce plantation productivity. This study aims to identify the population structure of the two beetle species and the diversity of arthropods in oil palm plantations in two locations with different growth phases, namely immature plants (TBM) and producing plants (TM). The results showed that the rhino beetle preadult population was only found in the TM location with an average population of 8.71 ± 18.21 individuals/plot, while the horned beetle was found in both locations with a higher population in the TBM location (30.13 ± 18.25 individuals/plot) compared to TM (22.33 ± 12.66 individuals/plot). The population structure of rhinoceros beetles was dominated by instar I and II larvae, while horned beetles were dominated by instar I, II, and III larvae. In addition, the diversity of arthropods in the TM site was higher than that in the TBM site, especially when sampling using the berlese funnel method. These findings have important implications for pest management in oil palm plantations, especially in minimizing losses due to pests with a plant growth phase-based approach and biodiversity management.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the structure, efficiency, and marketing margins of cocoa in North Kolaka Regency, focusing on two main distribution channels. Channel I follows the Farmer Collector/Wholesaler Factory pattern, with a marketing margin of Rp. 10,081/kg, while Channel II follows the Farmer Company pattern, with a margin of Rp. 7,329/kg. Efficiency calculations indicate that Channel I has an efficiency level of 0.25% and Channel II 0.21%, with lower percentage values indicating higher cost efficiency. Market concentration analysis using the concentration ratio of the four largest companies (CR4) yielded a value of 92%, indicating a very strong oligopoly market structure approaching monopoly. This condition indicates that pricing, supply volume, and product quality standards are heavily influenced by a handful of dominant players. Although product distribution is efficient, the high level of market concentration poses a risk of dependence on dominant players and barriers to entry for new players. Therefore, strengthening competition regulations, empowering farmer institutions, limiting distribution chains, and implementing product innovation strategies are necessary to improve the bargaining position of farmers and the cocoa supply chain.

Abstract

Seed priming with PEG 6000 is a pre-planting technology that has the potential to increase rice tolerance to drought stress and improve plant establishment in various seedling systems. This study aimed to examine the morphophysiological responses of three rice genotypes (IR64, Ciherang, and Cakrabuana) to seed priming with PEG 6000 at various concentrations and in different seedling systems. The study was conducted in two stages: (1) testing the tolerance of genotypes to drought stress using PEG 6000 concentrations of 0, 50, 100, and 150 g L⁻¹ at the germination stage, and (2) evaluating the effectiveness of priming at the vegetative stage with wet and dry seeding systems. A concentration of PEG 6000 at 100 g L⁻¹ provided optimal priming effects with a 15-25% increase in germination percentage and a 20-35% increase in seedling vigor compared to the control. The Cakrabuana genotype showed the best tolerance to drought stress, followed by Ciherang and IR64. Seed priming with PEG 6000 at a concentration of 100 g L⁻¹ effectively enhanced the drought tolerance and adaptation of rice genotypes in various germination systems, with varying responses among genotypes.

Abstract

Abstract. Rasyid B, Ala A, Kuswinanti T, Sapareng S. 2020. Exploring functional fungi on organic matter decomposition of oil palm empty bunches as bio-resource in land remediation. Biodiversitas 21: 4247-4252. Organic matter of oil palm by-product has the potential to be applied for land remediation. The objective of this experiment was to explore functional fungi on the decomposition effectivity of oil palm empty bunches. Samples were collected from oil palm plantation fields and oil palm factory. Isolated fungi from decomposed material (trunks and rod) were Penicillium sp., Pleurotus sp., Fusarium sp., Chrysosporium sp., and Aspergillus sp. Fungi in the empty fruit branches were identified as Absidia sp., Tremella sp., and Trichoderma sp., Phytophthora sp., Ulocladium sp., and Chaetomium sp. Within all collected fungal isolates, Pleurotus sp., Trichoderma sp., and Tremella sp. were selected as functional fungi based on the results of the highest lignocellulolytic ability (50-75%). The degradation rate of organic matter of each functional fungi was observed as Trichoderma sp. (24.0%), Tremella sp. (20.0%), and Pleurotus sp. (16.0%). Change of C/N ratio as a result of decomposition showed significant difference compared to control with 22.09 by Trichoderma sp., 24.26 by Pleurotus sp., 26.68 by Tremella sp. and 36.58 in control. This study could be concluded that exploring functional fungi can potentially be applied in the decomposition of oil palm by-product effectively.
