Abstract

Frailty, a significant geriatric syndrome, is a major complication of diabetes and is associated with adverse health outcomes. Indonesia, with its rapidly aging population, faces a substantial burden from these conditions. Community-based screening is essential for early detection and intervention. A community engagement program was conducted in Gunung Anyar District, Surabaya, involving 189 elderly participants. Simultaneous screenings for diabetes (via random blood glucose test) and frailty (using the validated FRAIL questionnaire) were performed. The study revealed a high dual burden of disease: 42.0% of participants had blood glucose levels indicative of diabetes, while 11.6% were classified as frail and 39.7% as pre-frail. About 30% of them were both unfit and poor glycemic control. This program demonstrates a high prevalence of diabetes and frailty among community-dwelling older adults in Surabaya, underscoring the urgent need for integrated geriatric care. The successful implementation of dual screening highlights the feasibility of incorporating these measures into primary care and the critical role of training community health workers to enable sustainable, early detection and management strategies.

Abstract

Background: Depression and anxiety are common psychological problems experienced by post-cesarean section mothers, affecting maternal well-being and infant development. Non-pharmacological interventions such as self-hypnosis may serve as safe and effective therapeutic methods. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of self-hypnosis in reducing depression and anxiety in post-cesarean section patients. Methods: This double-blind randomized controlled trial used a pretest–posttest control group design with 32 respondents randomly assigned to an intervention group (self-hypnosis, 15 minutes, twice daily, for 14 days) or a control group (cesarean section educational recording). Depression was assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and anxiety using the Postpartum Specific Anxiety Scale (PSAS). Within-group analysis used paired t-test or Wilcoxon, and between-group analysis used independent t-test or Mann–Whitney. Results: The intervention group’s EPDS score significantly decreased from 12.25 ± 1.29 to 7.94 ± 1.39 (p=0.000), while the control group showed no significant change (12.00 ± 1.21 to 11.50 ± 1.41; p=0.083). PSAS scores in the intervention group significantly decreased from 91.50 ± 3.82 to 74.13 ± 3.52 (p=0.000), whereas the control group did not (90.88 ± 3.09 to 89.69 ± 3.22; p=0.083). Between-group differences in score reduction were significant (p=0.000). Conclusion: Self-hypnosis is effective in reducing depression and anxiety in post-cesarean section patients and can be considered a supportive non-pharmacological intervention. Keywords: self-hypnosis, postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, cesarean section

Abstract

Background: The global population is aging rapidly, with older adults increasingly affected by chronic conditions such as diabetes mellitus. In Indonesia, diabetes among the elderly poses a significant public health concern, often complicated by under-recognized conditions like diabetic neuropathy. Aim: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a community-based intervention focused on targeted health education on diabetic neuropathy among elderly residents in urban area. Methods: A pre- and post-test design was used to assess the intervention's effectiveness. In collaboration with local health cadres and facilities, participants completed identical questionnaires on diabetic neuropathy before and after the health education session to measure improvements in knowledge. Results: A total of 143 elderly participants (median age: 65 years) were enrolled, with 73.4% being female. Post-education test scores showed a statistically significant improvement compared to pre-test scores (p<0.001p<0.001, Wilcoxon test). Of the participants, 22.4% were newly identified as having diabetes, and another 22% fell into the prediabetes range. Despite some variations in learning outcomes, 84.6% showed improved scores, indicating high effectiveness of the health education session. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that a community-based approach combining early diabetes screening and health education significantly improves elderly participants' knowledge about diabetes and diabetic neuropathy.

Abstract

Abstract Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. According to the World Health Organization (Global TB Report, 2023), TB is still a health problem in the world today. The number of people newly diagnosed with TB globally will be 7.5 million in 2022, with 12% being children (aged 0–14 years). One of the main focuses in treating TB is knowing the correct diagnosis method. TB examination in children is usually carried out by taking a Rapid Molecular Test (TCM) sputum specimen. However, sometimes this method is less effective because the child has difficulty expelling phlegm spontaneously. To overcome this problem, various countries have implemented other TB diagnosis methods such as Stool Culture, Xpert, and Xpert Ultra diagnosis. The Xpert diagnosis method increases the sensitivity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis detection so that TB detection in children can be more accurate. In the future, the Xpert Ultra diagnostic method has begun to be developed, whose sensitivity is more accurate than the Xpert method. With the correct diagnostic method, it is hoped that the treatment process for children with TB can be more effective.

Abstract

Background: FOMO is an anxiety that a person feels when they feel left out of the experiences shared by others on social media. In today's digital era, social media has become an important element in everyday life. The phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) is emerging as a significant negative impact, potentially disrupting individuals' mental health and sleep quality including insomnia. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the relationship between FOMO and insomnia and provide recommendations for management of social media use to improve sleep quality. Methods: A literature review was conducted through analyzing literature from Google Scholar, Pubmed, and Mendeley (2019-2024) with a focus on the keywords FOMO, insomnia, and mental health. Results: Findings suggest that FOMO contributes to sleep difficulties and decreased sleep quality. High social media use, especially at night, correlated with increased anxiety and sleep difficulties. The study also identified mechanisms such as rumination and negative emotional affect as factors that exacerbate insomnia among individuals experiencing FOMO. Conclusion: There is an association significant between FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and insomnia, where anxiety due to FOMO disrupts sleep patterns. Therefore, implementing management strategies such as limiting social media use before bedtime is essential to improve sleep quality and reduce the negative impact of FOMO.
