Abstract

Since the Covid-19 breakout, students in all levels of education across the nation from preschool to higher education have had no choice except to learn online. The Indonesian lecturers are required to think creatively managing their class online. This qualitative study examines descriptively on the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the college students’ opinion in 59 students from two selected private universities in Indonesia, Salatiga and Surakarta Islamic universities. It also studies further about the merging of 2 platforms such as WhatsApp Group and Google Meet could be a solution to student boredom and misunderstanding in learning English. The data was collected using Google forms. Then, inductive analysis was used to test the data. The findings show that, despite the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on online English classes, such as unstable signal problems and the need to be constantly in front of gadgets, the students in Salatiga and Surakarta can understand the material. They also have a good time in online English classes because the lecturers in WhatsApp Group include games, puzzles, quizzes, and other interesting activities to keep them entertained during online classes. During online learning, both lecturers and students at the University in Salatiga and Surakarta face numerous challenges, namely the need for the lecturers to be creative in class and to liven up the atmosphere, even though classes were held online due to a massive pandemic. This study recommends WhatsApp Group to be an effective platform to share information and task instructions related to the lecture and should be paired with Google Meet in scheduled online learning to obtain maximum effect for most students’ understanding toward the topic.

Abstract

The International Office Voluntary Program (IOSVOLP) at UIN Salatiga plays a strategic role in supporting the internationalization of higher education through active student involvement as volunteers. This program focuses on assisting international students in academic and non-academic adaptation while promoting Islamic values such as khidmah (service), ikhlas (sincerity), and amanah (responsibility). Using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, the program fosters collaboration among students, the institution, and the international community. Results show that volunteers significantly strengthen international services, cultural exchange, and the university’s global networking, contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as quality education, reduced inequalities, and peace-building. Challenges encountered include communication barriers and cultural differences, which are addressed through structured training, cultural introduction, and language support. The study highlights the need for a sustainable volunteer development system, including regular training and evaluation, to ensure both technical competence and value-based awareness. IOSVOLP is expected to serve as a professional and globally oriented campus volunteerism model rooted in Islamic values.

Abstract

This community service program aims to promote positive discipline among elementary school students by fostering the habit of performing Dhuha prayers in congregation. The method used is a participatory approach, with teachers actively assisting students, and photo documentation is used as observation material during the activities carried out directly in the school environment. This activity is participated in by all students from grades 1 to 6. The results of the activity show an improvement in student discipline, especially in punctuality, personal and environmental cleanliness, and polite and orderly behaviour during Dhuha prayers. In addition, students become more aware of their spiritual and religious responsibilities at school. Through the routine practice of worship, this activity can also strengthen the relationship between teachers and students and create a religious and conducive learning atmosphere. This program is expected to be implemented continuously with the support of the school and teachers to cultivate a positive discipline culture and religious character in students from an early age. In addition, the habitual practice of performing congregational Dhuha prayers also serves as a means for comprehensive character development of students, instilling values of responsibility, obedience to rules, cooperation, and exemplary behaviour through religious activities carried out together in the school environment.

Abstract

The character value of tolerance among students has been eroded by the challenges of this disruptive era, necessitating efforts to reinforce it through religious moderation. Meanwhile, English texts can be a solution to instilling religious moderation on a larger scale. Besides, it enriches students’ English skills. However, English reading text with Islamic value is limited and difficult to find. As a result, this study aims to remake texts using religious moderation for English learning and reveal the role of technology in remaking religious moderation reading texts. The qualitative descriptive method is used, and the data collection techniques were interview, observation, and documentation. The finding shows a five-phase framework for developing religious moderation-oriented reading texts: (1) selecting and adapting English texts from verified online sources, (2) conducting a needs analysis aligned with foundational and core competencies in reading skills, (3) contextualizing religious moderation principles into the texts, (4) embedding moderation values through deliberate modifications to narrative elements (e.g., characterization, settings, and plotlines), and (5) designing evaluative quizzes to assess both comprehension of moderation values and English proficiency. This systematic approach ensures the dual pedagogical objectives of fostering religious moderation awareness and enhancing literacy skills are met through culturally responsive material design. In addition, the technology helps the teacher in recreating the English text activity, specifically in searching for relevant and credible reading text resources. It also enhances teachers' creativity to present a more interesting text and quiz.

Abstract

Today many people are interested in implementing the concept of virtual classes, such as using Zoom Cloud Meetings for learning. Therefore, the authors are interested in discussing the difficulties of students in understanding learning activities using Zoom Cloud Meeting in virtual classes. The purposes include describing the kind of learning activities using Zoom Cloud Meeting in virtual classes and determining the students’ difficulties using Zoom Cloud Meeting in virtual classes. This study uses qualitative methods. The data collection techniques are interviewing ten respondents from the fifth-semester English Education Department of an Islamic University in Central Java, and the documentation. The results of this study indicate that learning by using zoom helps students and teachers meet virtually face-to-face. Zoom has various features that support the learning process, such as screen sharing, raising hand icons, chat comments, screen recording, and many other potential features. However, many students say that although Zoom has complete features, this application also has several shortcomings that become obstacles for students in understanding the concept of learning. These include limited-time usage and lag applications if the network or quota is insufficient. This study implied that Zoom Cloud Meeting makes the learning material not conveyed well; thus, the students' understanding becomes incomplete or partial.
