Abstract

Promoting the sociolinguistic competences in the teaching process is vital since the students are required to use English for real-life communication. One of ways that teachers can do is by inserting sociolinguistic competences in their teaching materials. However, rarely did they focus on the sociolinguistic competences. Therefore, this content analysis research aims to void this gap by analyzing the use of sociolinguistic competences in the textbook entitled “Let’s Talk”. The result shows that the textbook has already applied the sociolinguistic competences in the dialogs including the social factors, speech functions, and Leech’s Politeness Principles (PP). To summarize, textbooks should provide more dialogue models with diverse sociolinguistic contexts for practicing interactional and transactional communication. At that time, the learners would have been exposed to learn effective language use, as well as fluency practice and language accuracy, as these are prerequisites for achieving communicative competence goals.

Abstract

Bimbingan dan konseling sebagai salah satu aspek dalam pendidikan juga merasakan manfaat dari kemajuan teknologi informasi tersebut. Aplikasi yang sangat nyata adalah proses layanan bimbingan dan konseling sudah tidak harus dengan bertatap muka, melainkan bisa dengan menggunakan media informasi baik itu telepon maupun internet. tetapi semua itu bukan tanpa masalah. Banyak sekali hambatan yang menjadi duri bagi kemajuan dunia bimbingan dan konseling. Salah satunya adalah sumber daya manusianya yang belum bisa memanfaatkan dengan baik kemajuan teknologi informasi tersebut sehingga perlu sosialisasi kepada konselor maupun kepada konseli agar kedua belah pihak bisa sama-sama memanfaatkan media teknologi informasi yang sudah maju, terlebih saat masa pandemic saat ini pemanfaatan dan kemajuan teknogi sangat berperan besar bagi konselor maupun konseli. Metode yang digunakan dalam pengabdian ini adalah sosialisasi dan diskusi. Sosialisasi untuk meningkatkan kinerja konselor di sekolah dalam hal memanfaatkan kemajuan teknologi informasi agar nantinya bidang bimbingan dan konseling tidak lagi menjadi bidang layanan yang membosankan dan menjenuhkan. Jika konselor dan konseli sudah paham akan manfaat dan pentingnya teknologi informasi dalam menunjang proses layanan bimbingan dan konseling, maka ke depannya bimbingan dan konseling akan menjadi suatu bidang pendidikan yang inovatif dan efisien berkat kemajuan teknologi informasi namun tetap tidak menghilangkan esensi dari layanan bimbingan dan konseling itu sendiri

Abstract

Strategi penerjemahan untuk mencapai kesepadanan sangat diperlukan. Penelitian deskriptif-kualitatif ini bertujuan untuk menggali strategi yang digunakan oleh penerjemah dalam mengalihkan pesan pada naskah subtitle pada film The American Factory dalam Bahasa Inggris ke dalam Bahasa Indonesia. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan teknik simak catat. Kemudian, data dianalisa dengan metode padan referensial, translasional, dan metode agih sebagai analisa mendalamnya. Untuk memastikan validitas data dan proses, penelitian ini menggunakan metode triangulasi serta dengan mencantumkan data yang dikutip secara langsung. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat sejumlah strategi yang digunakan penerjemah dalam menerjemahkan subtitle tersebut a.l. deletion, adoption, category shift, level shift, dan intra-system shift. Abstract

Secara kongkrit, program Kampus Mengajar di bawah payung program Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka yang dikelola oleh Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia telah memberikan kesempatan bagi mahasiswa untuk mengaktualisasikan kapasitasnya melalui program di luar perkuliahan. Program Kampus Mengajar ini telah berjalan untuk Angkatan ke-3 pada medio Februari – July 2022. Program ini dilakukan di SD Negeri 04 Tuban, Kab. Karanganyar, Provinsi Jawa Tengah. Metode pengabdian pada program ini berupa pengajaran langsung, perbantuan adaptasi teknologi, dan pendampingan administrasi sekolah. Mahasiswa mengalami penempaan empati terhadap kehidupan yang nyata, terutama di dunia pendidikan sehingga gap antara kehidupan universitas dan lembaga pendidikan tersebut sedapat mungkin terkikis. Mereka juga dapat berkontribusi aktif dan bekerjasama lintas bidang ilmu sehingga dapat meningkatkan partisipasi mereka dalam pembangunan nasional.

Abstract

Teaching English for midwifery students is categorized as English for Specific Purposes (ESP). In this course, need analysis need to be conducted to discover what students already know, what they need to know, and what they want to know. To this end, the study investigated the target needs and learning needs of midwifery students. A total of 53 students responded to a questionnaire and open-ended interview. The results demonstrated that students wanted to be able to communicate English fluently. Also, they wanted to understand various English texts related to their midwifery field. The result also showed that most students were at the beginner level indicating that they were just able to understand simple sentences and expressions used in a daily life. Regarding learning needs, students preferred to have the input text in the form of dialogue and monologue provided with pictures with the length of the texts of less than 150 words and between 150-250 words. According to the results obtained from this study, it can be concluded that need analysis needs to be conducted before giving the English course based on the students’ field study.

Abstract

Kondisi saat ini menunjukkan bahwa masih rendahnya kemampuan mahasiswa untuk merencanakan penelitian dan menuliskan mempublikasikan artikel hasil penelitian pada jurnal ilmiah. Tujuan dari pengabdian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kompetensi mahasiswa dalam menghasilkan karya ilmiah yang dipublikasikan pada jurnal ilmiah. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini yaitu pelatihan dan pendampingan dengan rincian kegiatan yaitu identifikasi kebutuhan, penyusunan program pelatihan, penentuan metode pembelajaran, penyusunan materi pelatihan, penyelenggaraan pelatihan, pendampingan dan bimbingan individu, evaluasi, publikasi dan penyebaran. Hasil pengabdian masyarakat ini menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kemampuan menulis mahasiswa, kualitas artikel yang lebih baik, produktifitas penulisan artikel ilmiah, peningkatan partisipasi dalam forum ilmiah.

Abstract

For teaching and student learning, textbooks are a vital and widely used resource. The purpose of this study was to assess the unit design in "Bahasa Inggris kelas XI Semester I" to respond the post-pandemic Covid-19. This study was classified as a textbook evaluation. Document analysis and interviews were used to collect data. Miles' and Huberman's model was considered to be used in data analysis through data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The study finds that the textbook addresses only three of the six suggested indicators, lacks appropriate images that can aid students' comprehension, and has no clear grading system or instructions for students, which can lead to confusion and undermine their ability to complete tasks successfully. The study recommends that future textbook writers should consider appropriate visuals to complement the text, use pictures as symbols or icons, and provide explicit instructions to guide students towards achieving learning objectives. The findings of the study can inform future textbook writers, teachers, and curriculum developers to improve the quality of English language education in Indonesian schools. Moreover, the study highlights the need for textbooks to adapt to the new normal of remote learning.

Abstract

Since the Covid-19 breakout, students in all levels of education across the nation from preschool to higher education have had no choice except to learn online. The Indonesian lecturers are required to think creatively managing their class online. This qualitative study examines descriptively on the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the college students’ opinion in 59 students from two selected private universities in Indonesia, Salatiga and Surakarta Islamic universities. It also studies further about the merging of 2 platforms such as WhatsApp Group and Google Meet could be a solution to student boredom and misunderstanding in learning English. The data was collected using Google forms. Then, inductive analysis was used to test the data. The findings show that, despite the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on online English classes, such as unstable signal problems and the need to be constantly in front of gadgets, the students in Salatiga and Surakarta can understand the material. They also have a good time in online English classes because the lecturers in WhatsApp Group include games, puzzles, quizzes, and other interesting activities to keep them entertained during online classes. During online learning, both lecturers and students at the University in Salatiga and Surakarta face numerous challenges, namely the need for the lecturers to be creative in class and to liven up the atmosphere, even though classes were held online due to a massive pandemic. This study recommends WhatsApp Group to be an effective platform to share information and task instructions related to the lecture and should be paired with Google Meet in scheduled online learning to obtain maximum effect for most students’ understanding toward the topic.

Abstract

Mastery of English languages is vital in preparing graduates to compete on a global scale in order to improve the quality of human resources in the world of education. As a result, efforts to improve English mastery for the academic community are evidence of an institution's seriousness in realizing its commitment to international standard institutions. The Covid-19 pandemic is currently affecting a variety of industries, particularly education. The Study from Home (SFH) system has now been adopted by many educational institutions. This, however, isn't enough. Many parents express their dissatisfaction with having to accompany their children to their home study sessions. This is not a major issue for students from upper middle-class families, as their parents will almost certainly provide facilities and private tutoring. Students from lower-middle-class families have a different situation. They must learn to be self-sufficient within the confines of their current circumstances. One of the private vocational schools in Central Java is SMK Warga Surakarta. Students in this school have difficulty understanding English sentences, according to the results of interviews with English teachers. As a result, English language training is required at SMA Warga in Surakarta to improve students' comprehension.

Abstract

This study investigated  students’ perception on the use of  poster oral  presentations (POPs) in English to teach an English course. Employing a qualitative research approach, the investigation involves comprehensive examinations through interviews and an observation conducted with students to gauge the effects of this educational intervention on their language acquisition and communication capabilities. The findings suggest that the instructional design of Poster Oral Presentations (POPs) in English employs a structured learning procedure, including sessions on learning the concept of scientific poster presentations, research, content development, poster creation, English presentation delivery, and formal presentations. These findings also reveal that these activities are engaging and enjoyable for students, fostering active participation, vocabulary development, practical language application, and improved communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills, though it highlights the need for more comprehensive understanding during discussions to address occasional challenges in language comprehension. The findings arising from this research have implications for educators, curriculum designers, and policymakers, offering insights into the practicality of utilizing POPs as an immersive and effective method for enhancing students' English language skills . Ultimately, this investigation contributes to the ongoing discourse surrounding innovative educational methodologies, yielding a deeper comprehension of how innovative pedagogy can profoundly influence language acquisition and communication proficiencies.
