Abstract

This study examines community perception of the environmental and social impacts of the Tiga Saudara Farm layer chicken farm in Gunungjaya Village, Belik District, Pemalang Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. The farm, established in 2018 with a capacity of 500 laying hens, is located only 20–30 meters from residential housing, well below the 250-meter minimum distance stipulated by national livestock zoning regulations. A descriptive quantitative survey was conducted among 40 respondents selected through purposive random sampling, with data collected via questionnaires (five-point Likert scale), interviews, and field observations. Results show that community perception of environmental factors, including air quality, odor-related health disturbance, and cleanliness, falls into the neutral category, while perception of water pollution is categorized as disagreement, indicating that no water contamination is perceived. Chicken manure is widely regarded as a useful organic fertilizer. Regarding social impacts, respondents perceive clear benefits from easier access to eggs and social assistance, whereas awareness of environmental risks and access to government-led waste-management education remain limited. Overall, the community tolerates the farm's proximity because the perceived economic and social benefits outweigh environmental concerns, although improved waste-management education is recommended.

Abstract

This study compared the internal quality of duck eggs reared under intensive and free-range (umbaran) systems in three villages in Padamara Subdistrict, Purbalingga Regency, in terms of yolk index, albumen index, pH, and yolk color. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) in a 2x3 factorial arrangement was used, with Rearing System (intensive and free-range) and Village (Karangjambe, Padamara, and Kalitinggar) as the two factors, with three farmers as replications for each treatment combination. Eggs were sampled from 18 farmers, two eggs (duplicates) each, resulting in 36 eggs; duplicate values were averaged as the observation unit. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) for factors with more than two significant categories. Results showed that rearing system significantly affected yolk color (P<0.01), with the intensive system producing a more intense yolk color (14.00) than the free-range system (12.00). Village significantly affected albumen index (P<0.01), with Kalitinggar producing the highest albumen index (5.86%), while Padamara (5.14%) and Karangjambe (4.67%) did not differ significantly. Neither rearing system nor village significantly affected yolk index or pH (P>0.05), and the interaction between rearing system and village did not significantly affect any of the four observed variables. It is concluded that rearing system plays an important role in determining yolk color, while agroecological location plays an important role in determining albumen index, whereas yolk index and pH remained relatively stable across all treatment combinations tested.

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the external quality (egg weight, shell weight, shell percentage, and egg index) and internal quality (yolk index, albumen index, Haugh unit, and yolk color) of three chicken egg types, namely free-range (kampung), commercial layer (ras), and omega-3-enriched commercial layer eggs. A completely randomized design with three treatments and twelve replications (36 eggs) was applied, comprising P1 (free-range), P2 (layer), and P3 (omega-3 layer). Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA at the 5% level, followed by Duncan's multiple range test, while yolk color scores were confirmed by the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results showed a highly significant effect (P<0.01) on egg weight, shell weight, albumen index, Haugh unit, and yolk color, a significant effect (P<0.05) on egg index, and no significant effect (P>0.05) on shell percentage and yolk index. Layer and omega-3 layer eggs exhibited higher egg and shell weights; the layer egg produced the highest egg index, while free-range and layer eggs shared the highest albumen index and Haugh unit. Omega-3 layer eggs showed the most intense yolk color. Egg-type differences markedly influenced most quality attributes; therefore, quality assessment should integrate both external and internal parameters.

Abstract

Fresh whole-plant maize (tebon) is a potential forage source for ruminants, yet field data on its productivity by seed type and its regional potential in Purbalingga Regency remain limited. This study aimed to describe maize forage productivity by seed type and location and to project potential production and ruminant carrying capacity based on maize land area. We surveyed 16 farmers selected through purposive random sampling in Kejobong and Bukateja Subdistricts. We measured fresh forage weight and converted it to productivity (ton/ha; 1 ubin = 14 m2), then analyzed it descriptively and projected it against the regency maize harvested area. Mean forage productivity was 50.6 ton/ha, with a coefficient of variation of 13.6%, indicating relatively uniform results among respondents. Naga seed showed the highest aggregate productivity (53.5 ton/ha). Projected onto the 6,858 ha maize harvested area, the regency holds a potential of about 347,015 ton fresh forage per year, equivalent to roughly 41,000 animal units. Maize forage therefore has strong potential to support ruminant feed provision in Purbalingga.
