Abstract

This research analyzes the stereotypes of beauty and ugliness in Soman Chainani’s The School for Good and Evil. This research aims to identify the stereotypes of beauty and ugliness constructed through the characterization of the two main characters, Sophie and Agatha, as well as how the novel challenges and reconstructs traditional expectations of beauty and ugliness. Using a qualitative approach and descriptive analysis methods, this research identifies narrative elements that reinforce and challenge these stereotypes. The research results show that beauty is often associated with good, while ugliness is associated with evil. Sophie, who is described as very physically beautiful, was initially considered good, but later developed into a character full of selfishness. Agatha, who is perceived as ugly, actually displays kindness and strong morality. The novel The School For Good and Evil subverts the traditional stereotype, showing that physical appearance does not always reflect a person's morality. This research uses the theories of Janice Radway and John Cawelti. Radway explains that beauty is often associated with the role of the female hero, while Cawelti discusses the balance between convention and invention in popular works. This research identifies beauty not only through outer beauty such as physical appearance but also inner beauty. Good deeds such as defending, forgiving, helping, giving, and loving are the essence of goodness. With the meaning that inner beauty involves honesty, sincerity, and good deeds that reflect the values of true goodness.

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of directive speech acts in TED Talk language learning videos through a pragmatic approach, focusing on orders and suggestions as primary categories. The research examines the speeches of four speakers Matyas Pilin, Chris Lonsdale Lydia Machova, and Marianna Pascal to understand how their speech styles influence the delivery of language learning strategies. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling data collection. From the 273 data that the author found, 47 data of utterances were selected from four different videos for analysis. The findings reveal that male speakers predominantly use orders, emphasizing a structured and authoritative instructional approach, while female speakers favor suggestions, promoting a supportive and motivational teaching style. This balance between orders and suggestions highlights the diverse strategies employed to address both cognitive and emotional aspects of learners. This study contributes to the fields of pragmatics and educational communication by demonstrating how directive speech acts influence instructional effectiveness. The findings provide valuable insights for educators, linguists, and public speakers in developing more impactful and learner-centered teaching methods. Moreover, the study offers a foundation for further research into the interplay of speech acts, instructional strategies, and cultural or contextual influences in educational settings.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis in which the data is analyzed descriptively and qualitatively by using structural analysis theory. This research analyses the main characters in two fairy tales, The Two Sisters from England and Bawang Merah Bawang Putih from Indonesia. The results of this study aim to explore: 1) the similarities and  differences between the main characters in The Two Sisters and Bawang Merah Bawang Putih, and 2) how the characters are portrayed through structural analysis. The results of this study show that there are similarities in the characters of the two fairy tales. Bawang Putih is described as a hardworking character, identical to one of the sisters in The Two Sisters fairy tale who is also described as such. Bawang Merah, is portrayed as jealous and lazy, similar to his sister, who is also not a good character. Both stories also show similarities in using the contrast between good and bad characters. This research also contributes significantly to the field of comparative literature by showing how comparative methods and structural analysis theory can be applied to explore similarities and differences in fairy tales from different cultural backgrounds.

Abstract

This qualitative comparative literature study investigates the lexical evolution driven by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies within English and Indonesian linguistic contexts. Focusing on AI-related vocabulary, such as machine learning, prompts, and fine-tuning, the research critically analyses how these terms emerge, adapt, and shift semantically across both languages. English, identified as a global language, serves predominantly as a lexical innovator and supplier of new technological terms. In contrast, Indonesian demonstrates dynamic lexical negotiation through processes of borrowing, semantic adjustment, and selective localisation. The analysis highlights that these linguistic responses reflect deeper cultural, ideological, and social considerations, wherein borrowed terms often undergo subtle semantic shifts influenced by local perceptions of technology and digital interactions. The study explores hybrid linguistic practices that have arisen, particularly in digital communication, reflecting users’ strategic linguistic choices rooted in cultural identity, technological authority, and social contexts. This hybridity highlights the complexities of language use in the digital age, reflecting the negotiations between global integration and cultural authenticity. This research sheds light on broader implications regarding globalisation, linguistic sustainability, and sociocultural identity, suggesting that future research should further investigate empirical data to enhance our understanding of how communities actively navigate linguistic changes amid technological advancements.

Abstract

Turn-taking is fundamental in political debates, as control of the turn reflects a speaker’s communicative authority. Limited research has compared how different candidates utilize turn-taking strategies to assert control or dominance in presidential debates. This study aims to identify and analyse the turn-taking strategies employed by Donald Trump and Kamala Harris in the 2024 U.S presidential debate using Stenstrom (2014) framework. A total of 130 data points were collected from the ABC News YouTube Channel and analysed using qualitative descriptive methods. Following the steps proposed by Merriam Tisdell (2015). The findings show that Trump predominantly used aggressive interruptive and taking the turn strategies, while Harris tended to apply more structured and holding the turn strategies. The study concludes that turn-taking strategies not only shape the structure and flow of the debate but also reflect each candidate’s dominance in the interaction.
