Abstract

The compounds contained in pomegranate skin are phenolic acids, flavonoids, and tannins, including anthocyanidin, gallic acid, ellagic acid, ellagitannin, gallotanin, catechin, quercetin, which have antioxidant properties. The benefits of pomegranate peels are that they treat health problems and maintain beautiful skin. This research aimed to see the effect of adding pomegranate peel (Punica granatum L.) ethanol extract on the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value of a combination of avobenzone and octyl methoxycinnamate sunscreen cream. This research was carried out using experimental methods. The formulation of sunscreen cream preparations uses pomegranate peel ethanol extract in various concentrations. The cream was evaluated to determine its Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value, organoleptic test, homogeneity, pH, emulsion type, and irritation test. The organoleptic test results showed that the cream produced in the blank had no odor and was white, while the cream with the addition of pomegranate peel ethanol extract had a distinctive smell and was brown. The emulsion type test shows the oil in the water type.  The addition of pomegranate peel ethanol extract to each formula increased the sun protection factor (SPF) value of sunscreen preparations. The average SPF value of each formula was FI 12.5956, FII 13.9673, FIII 16 .8205, FIV 17.9187, and FV 18.8437.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to provide training on the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) system to employees of a palm oil-based oleochemical industry company that processes residues and waste from palm oil derivative products. The training utilized a blended learning approach with pre-test and post-test evaluation using 20 multiple-choice questions, involving 30 participants. The results showed a significant improvement in participants' understanding, with average pre-test scores of 62.3 (SD=15.8) increasing to 87.7 (SD=9.4) on post-test, indicating an improvement of 25.4 points (40.7%, p<0.001). Twenty-one participants (70%) achieved excellent category (90-100) on post-test compared to only 6 participants (20%) on pre-test. Participant satisfaction reached 4.6/5.0 with 83.3% expressing high satisfaction. Follow-up after 1 month showed that 80% of participants had applied their knowledge in the workplace and 66.7% of companies began ISCC certification preparation. This activity successfully increased the human resource capacity of the oleochemical industry in understanding and implementing ISCC standards, supporting the competitiveness of Indonesian products in the global market that prioritizes sustainability aspects.

Abstract

Background: Yogurt quality improvement can be achieved through synbiotic formulations combining probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus) with prebiotics from modified purple yam starch (Dioscorea alata). This plant contains 7.54% inulin and has potential as a natural stabilizer, but its utilization in synbiotic yogurt remains suboptimal. This study aims to evaluate the effect of modified starch incorporation on probiotic viability, physical stability, and sensory acceptance. Objective: This research aimed to examine the capability of modified purple yam starch as a prebiotic source in synbiotic yogurt, focusing on its impact on syneresis, bacterial viability, and organoleptic properties. Methods: An experimental study using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with six treatments. The process included purple yam starch extraction, starch modification via autoclaving (110°C and 121°C), yogurt fermentation using three bacterial strains, and evaluation of pH, syneresis, Total Plate Count (TPC), and hedonic tests by 20 panelists. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney, and Spearman correlation tests. Results: Yogurt formulations with modified yam starch yielded optimal pH (6.81 with L. rhamnosus) and highest syneresis (30.02%). Bacterial viability reached 431 × 10³ CFU/mL (10⁻² dilution) for L. rhamnosus. Organoleptic tests showed the highest scores for aroma (6.90 ± 0.31) and a significant correlation between taste-thickness (ρ=0.52; p<0.05). Color was consistent (score 6), while texture preference varied (scores 5-7). Conclusion: Modified purple yam starch effectively functions as a prebiotic and stabilizer in synbiotic yogurt, supporting probiotic viability and sensory acceptance. This formulation holds promise as a functional food product utilizing local ingredients.
