Abstract

This study investigates the cultural dynamics of Indonesian football supporters by focusing on rivalry, ritual, and the residues produced through visual swearing in urban spaces. Tracking local derbies and inter-group tensions, the research employs theories of collective behaviour alongside the neuro-psycho-social framework to explain how swearing operates as a ritualised emotional mechanism that regulates tension, reinforces solidarity, and asserts territorial boundaries among rival groups. Conducted through one-year qualitative ethnography, the study draws on participant observation, brief interviews, and document analysis of supporter posters, stickers, and graffiti. The findings reveal a critical spatial shift. Inside stadiums, swearing takes on ritual value: it amplifies rivalry, intensifies match-day atmosphere, and channels collective emotions in controlled ways. Outside stadiums, however, these ritual expressions leave material residues, most visibly through posters and stickers affixed to walls, trees, and road signs, as well as rivalry-driven graffiti. These visual forms of swearing extend symbolic aggression into public environments and generate long-lasting environmental damage. By connecting collective emotional behaviour with ecological consequences, this study introduces an analytical perspective rarely addressed in scholarship on swearing, which often focuses on individual or interpersonal dimensions. The findings offer strategic insights for supporter groups, football authorities, and urban policymakers seeking to preserve rivalry culture while reducing its environmental impact. Ultimately, the research argues that supporter expression must be understood not only as cultural ritual but also as a practice with measurable environmental residues.

Abstract

Perkembangan media digital ataupun online sedikit banyak telah merubah budaya fans sepakbola. Fantasy Premier League (FPL) merupakan salah satu game berbasis fantasy sport yang memberikan ruang pada fans untuk bersimulasi menjadi manajer sebuah tim dan mengelola pemain-pemain yang merupakan representasi dari pesepakbola Liga Inggris divisi teratas (EPL) di dunia nyata. Penelitian ini menjawab pertanyaan: Bagaimana peran game Fantasy Premier League (FPL) dalam mengubah budaya fans dalam mendukung klub dan pemain sepakbola di era digital? Serta bagaimana bentuk perubahan budaya fans sepakbola yang bermain Fantasy Premier League dalam praktik mendukung klub dan pemain sepakbola idolanya? Menggunakan studi kasus, penelitian ini melakukan pencarian data dengan wawancara kelompok subjek yang terdiri dari enam informan pemain FPL. Penelitian ini menggarisbawahi bahwa fitur FPL yaitu liga mini memungkinkan FPL menjadi permainan yang dimainkan secara komunitas. Pergeseran kultur baru yang muncul yakni bagaimana fans tidak lagi sekedar mendukung klub sepakbola, tetapi juga mendukung tiap pemain sesuai yang mereka pasang dalam FPL, meski bertentangan dengan klub yang mereka dukung. Dengan meneliti praktik memainkan FPL, dapat dikatakan bahwa fans digital tidak semata-mata merupakan perpindahan fans sepakbola stadion dan televisi ke platform digital. Sebaliknya, game digital dapat menginisiasi lahirnya fans sepakbola (atau komunitas) dengan budaya fans sepakbola yang baru.

Abstract

Digital communication plays a crucial role in organizing international sporting events that require extensive message dissemination and real-time audience engagement. However, the increasing volume of information distributed through social media does not necessarily produce uniform perceptions among audiences. This study aims to analyze the distribution of information and the circulation of netizen perceptions during the 2025 Mandalika MotoGP event through the Instagram account @themandalikagp.This research employs a qualitative approach using virtual observation, semi-structured interviews, and Social Network Analysis (SNA) with NodeXL and SocialBlade tools. Data validity is ensured through peer debriefing. The study involves 28 informants, consisting of followers and non-followers of the @themandalikagp account.The findings reveal that information distribution is highly centralized, following a hub-and-spoke network pattern with the official account acting as the primary information source. This structure effectively generates high audience awareness but does not result in homogeneous perceptions. Instead, netizen perceptions circulate in a heterogeneous and layered manner, forming clusters based on opinion similarity and sentiment (positive, neutral, and negative). The analysis also indicates that while network centralization facilitates rapid dissemination, it limits horizontal interaction among users.This study concludes that digital communication in social media operates beyond linear information transmission, involving dynamic processes of perception formation and meaning construction within networked environments. The novelty of this research lies in integrating information distribution, audience perception, and social network structure into a unified analytical framework. These findings contribute to the development of digital communication theory and provide practical insights for optimizing communication strategies in international sporting events.
