Abstract

Speech acts are the main unit of analysis in pragmatics that highlights how hidden meanings and intentions are constructed in real communication. This study aims to analyze the forms of locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary speech acts used by online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers in daily interactions with passengers. The research method used is qualitative method with data collection techniques through direct observation and semi-structured interviews with ojol drivers in Medan city. The interview was conducted on the way from Medan State University to Podomoro City Mall, then the data obtained were recorded and analyzed. The results show that locutionary acts function to convey information literally, illocutionary acts contain certain intentions or goals that speakers want to achieve, and perlocutionary acts cause effects or influences on interlocutors. Conversational analysis shows that simple interactions between students and ojol drivers contain complex communication dynamics, not only exchanging information but also building understanding and influencing attitudes. In conclusion, speech acts in ojol drivers' conversations reflect that verbal communication involves deep cognitive, social, and pragmatic processes, while reinforcing the role of language in building social relationships in a professional context.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the belief systems held by every nation, which can influence individuals. Despite the modern era, traditional ceremonies as vessels of noble culture still play a significant role for some communities in their social lives. The issues addressed in this study are: What is the process of implementing the RokatPakarangan in Karduluk Village, Pragaan, Sumenep? What are the Islamic educational values within the RokatPakarangan tradition in this village? The methods used include interviews and case studies. The results indicate that the RokatPakarangan tradition is a ceremonial practice conducted to bless the land, aiming to receive an abundance of sustenance, blessings, and safety, thus avoiding calamities. This tradition can be carried out after Maghrib, Isha, and Subuh prayers, involving several components such as free-range chicken, rice, five-colored porridge, and flower-infused water. The Islamic educational values contained in the RokatPakarangan tradition include moral values such as maintaining good relations (silaturahim), worship values such as gratitude and charity, and lastly, doctrinal values such as tahlilan (reciting Surah Yasin, dhikr, and prayers). Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi oleh setiap bangsa yang mempunyai kepercayaan yang dapat mempengaruhi setiap individu. Walaupun perkembangan zaman yang semakin modern, upacara tradisional sebagai wahana budaya luhur bisa dikatakan masih memegang peranan penting bagi sebagian masyarakat dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat. Permasalahan yang muncul dalam penelitian ini yaitu: Bagaimana proses pelaksanaan Rokat Pakarangan di Desa Karduluk Pragaan Sumenep ? Apa saja nilai-nilai pendidikan Islam dalam tradisi Rokat Pakarangan di DesaKarduluk Pragaan Sumenep. Adapun metode yang digunakan ialah metode wawancara dan studi kasus.Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa tradisi Rokat Pakarangan adalahsuatu tradisi selametan yang dilakukan untuk menyelamati Pakarangan, dengantujuan supaya diberi limpahan rezeki, keberkahan, keselamatan supaya bisaterhindar dari marabahaya, yang bisa dilaksanakan sesudah Maghrib, Isha’ danSubuh. Dengan menyiapkan beberapa komponen seperti ayam kampung, nasi,bubur lima warna, air rendaman bunga. Adapun nilai pendidikan Islam yangterkandung dalam tradisi Rokat Pakarangan yaitu nilai akhlaq seperti silaturahim,nilai ibadah seperti bersyukur dan sedekah yang terakhir nilai aqidah sepertitahlilan (memabaca surat Yasin, dzikir-dzikir dan do’a)

Abstract

Hedging is an important rhetorical strategy in political discourse, used to show a degree of confidence and build a positive image of the leader, especially in US Presidential speeches from 1993 to 2021. The purpose of this study is to analyze the role of hedging in building a positive image and understand the variations of its use based on the political context and audience. The method used is a qualitative literature study, with secondary data analysis in the form of speech transcripts and related literature. The main findings show that the use of hedging varies between presidents, where Bill Clinton and Barack Obama use it to maintain credibility and reinforce commitments, while Donald Trump uses it less, but still in a diplomatic context. The research conclusion confirms that hedging has an important role in building a positive image of the leader but should be used with caution so as not to be misinterpreted as uncertainty.

Abstract

The research aim to obtain the learning style of seven grade students at SMP Pahlwan Medan. The result gained from this study are used to develop Pop-Up Book Digital as learning media which appropriate based on student’s need. This research method used the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). But researchers limit this study only to the analysis stage where to analyzed student’s learning style as the first stage. The data collection technique is in the form of a questionnaire and have been given to 27 students. The result of this study shows that the majority of students, namely 32.8%, have a visual learning style, then 32.6% have an auditory learning style, and 21.5% have a kinesthetic learning style. Abstract

This study aims to identify student's perception about independent learning and activities and also how their teachers encourage independent learning during English class. The research used qualitative method to obtain student's perception. The source of data is 20 students from SMA Brigjend Katamso 1 Medan which Student's perception and experience are the data. Open and close ended questionnaire are used as instruments to collect the data. The close-ended responses are analyzed using simple descriptive statistics (such as percentages), whereas the open-ended responses are categorized into themes to capture the underlying meanings and insights. The results indicate that while students actively engage in independent learning activities, teacher support and encouragement for such independent learning in the classroom is still limited
