Abstract

This article investigates matters of Americanization in the adaptation of Power Rangers superhero serials to be imbued with American values from its original Japanese version entitled Super Sentai. Even though transcultural serials are considered successful in the United States and worldwide, they are deemed culturally problematic. Through a qualitative method and an explorative approach, the analysis explores that Power Rangers’ adaptation is shadowed by gender, racial, and second character issues. For instance, the gender aspect is related to gender swap, pink rangers, and the wearing of skirts by female rangers. Racial issues cover matters of the idealized melting pot in the U.S. Second character issues include matters of child employment, demonized monsters, and the usage of armed weapons. In conclusion, while Power Rangers is commercially successful, its adaptation process selectively modifies cultural elements, presenting an idealized rather than an authentic reality.

Abstract

This paper explores the concept of perpetual peace in Henry van Dyke's flash fiction entitled Ashes of Vengeance. The story revolves around the harsh city of Dun, where a man, known as the avenger, seeks revenge for the death of his family. He escapes prison and offers a secret pathway to take over the city to the chief of the besiegers, Alaric. However, upon seeing the city's current state, he changes his focus to peace. Then, how is perpetual peace related in Henry van Dyke’s Ashes of Vengeance? Through Immanuel Kant's theory of perpetual peace, stable peace occurs when all people, governed by universal rule of law, rather than proprietary rulers. In this story, the proprietary ruler is represented by the people of Dun, while Alaric represents the person who wishes to rule according to universal law. Using qualitative analysis, the paper concludes that individuals can achieve stable peace if people do not commit an act that would make a possibility of peace impossible for the future, and that perpetual peace will gradually be achieved.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to enhance students’ literacy skills through the implementation of the Reading Aloud method for elementary school pupils at SDN Kapasari I, conducted by lecturers and students of Universitas Dr. Soetomo. The program was designed to foster students’ reading interest and fluency in English by engaging them in expressive reading activities. The implementation consisted of three stages: initial assessment, service delivery, and evaluation. Documentation techniques were used to collect data throughout the process. Approximately fifty students participated actively in the program. They were encouraged to read selected fables both aloud and silently, record their performances, and present them before their peers. The results showed that the Reading Aloud activity effectively increased students’ motivation, confidence, and fluency in reading English texts. In conclusion, this community service project successfully contributed to improving elementary students’ literacy competence and confidence in public reading performance.
