Abstract

This study explores the contestation of religious authority in Indonesian digital da’wah, examining how traditional ulama and Muslim influencers interact and negotiate their legitimacy on social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. Utilizing a qualitative digital discourse analysis combined with non-participatory online observation, the research analyzes selected religious content to understand communication styles, symbols of authority, audience engagement, and narratives of legitimacy. The findings reveal that the rise of Muslim influencers and digital preachers has led to a fragmentation of religious authority, shifting from traditional sources such as scholarly lineage and institutional affiliation to factors like visibility, popularity, affective communication, and algorithmic circulation. This transformation creates opportunities for democratizing Islamic preaching, making it more accessible to younger Muslims, but also introduces risks such as superficial religious understanding, pseudo-authority, and polarization. Traditional ulama respond by adopting integrative, collaborative, and defensive strategies, often involving younger digital actors to adapt classical messages into platform-friendly formats. The results highlight the complex dynamics of digital religious authority, emphasizing the importance of understanding how authority is reshaped through interactions between tradition, platform logic, and digital visibility, which has significant implications for the future of Islamic discourse in Indonesia. This article contributes to Islamic studies by showing that religious authority in the digital age is not simply displaced, but contested, negotiated, and reconfigured through the interaction between scholarly tradition, platform logic, generational mediation, and digital visibility.

Abstract

Abstract

Radicalism and terrorism in Indonesia remain an unresolved threat. One of the Indonesian government's efforts to address this issue is through a deradicalization program. Although not a region with the highest threat level, Jepara Regency, as one of Indonesia's regencies, is not immune to the problem of radicalism and terrorism. The purpose of this study is to describe effective da'wah strategies for deradicalizing radical/terrorist prisoners. This study uses a qualitative approach to gain a deeper understanding of the re-education da'wah strategy in the effort to deradicalize radical prisoners in Jepara, Central Java. This study adopted a case study design, which allowed researchers to intensively and comprehensively gather information about the re-education da'wah strategy implemented in Jepara. Primary data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews with da'i (re-education facilitators) and relevant stakeholders. This study concludes that radicalism prisoners in Jepara, Indonesia were successfully neutralized from radical thoughts before acts of terrorism occurred by law enforcement officers together with stakeholders, namely the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and the youth organization GP.Ansor through a re-education da'wah communication.

Abstract

This article analyzes Islamic journalism in the algorithmic era by highlighting the relationship between the mission of da'wah, information ethics, and the logic of digital platforms. The development of digital media has changed the practice of Islamic journalism from just delivering religious information to a form of digital da'wah that operates in an algorithm-based system. This research uses a qualitative approach with a library research method through a descriptive-critical analysis of the literature on Islamic journalism, digital da'wah, information ethics, and digital platforms. The results of the study show that Islamic journalism faces a tension between the value of da'wah and the logic of the attention economy in digital platforms. On the one hand, Islamic journalism is required to maintain the principles of da'wah, tabayyun, accuracy, balance, and social responsibility. On the other hand, digital media encourages adaptation to click-based visibility mechanisms, engagement, virality, and content distribution optimization. This article offers an adaptive negotiation model that places da'wah, information ethics, and platform logic as elements that must be managed in a balanced manner. Islamic journalism in the age of algorithms should not reject digital technologies, but neither should it be completely subservient to the logic of platforms. Therefore, an adaptive, ethical, and credible Islamic communication model is needed so that the da'wah function continues to run effectively in the midst of changes in the digital media ecosystem.

Abstract

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially generative AI and large language models (LLMs), has transformed the ways people search for, produce, and circulate religious knowledge. In the context of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), AI offers opportunities for strengthening digital da'wah, religious literacy, and organizational services, yet it also raises serious questions about epistemic validity, religious authority, and the continuity of sanad in Islamic learning. This article analyzes how NU actors respond to AI in relation to da'wah, religious literacy, and digital khidmah. It employs a descriptive qualitative and exploratory approach based on literature review, digital observation, and limited interviews with NU actors concerned with media and digital transformation. The data were analyzed thematically by focusing on three issues: AI as a tool for digital service, the epistemic risks of AI-generated religious answers, and the ethical importance of sanad, tabayyun, and human authority. The article argues that AI should be positioned as a wasilah for digital khidmah, rather than a substitute for ulama, kiai, pesantren, or bahtsul masail. Its contribution lies in formulating an NU-based ethical reading of AI that combines technological adaptation with the preservation of religious knowledge, scholarly authority, source credibility, and pesantren-based ethics.

The results of this study indicate that advocacy by students for a policy issued by the government is quite important, especially when the policy issued is not pro-society. However, what must be considered in the delivery of advocacy carried out by students, must be based on the principles of Islamic da'wah.
